Walker: PARS proved a point

Author: Niall Shaw Date: Thursday, 12th Sep 2002

Dunfermline`s Scott Walker reckons the Pars` players answered their critics in the best possible fashion at Easter Road, by breaking a curse which has stood for 41 years.

The Fifers came in for vigorous criticism in the wake of their 6-0 home mauling from league leaders Rangers 11 days ago.

Manager Jimmy Calderwood returned to Holland during the international week to mull over the problems, hoping to spring a surprise in Leith.

His game-plan worked perfectly, with the Fifers recording their first league win over Hibs in Edinburgh since 1961.

And former St Mirren player Walker, deployed at left midfield, believes the 4-1 win was the perfect antidote to the Rangers hang-over.

"It was very pleasing, especially the way we played against Hibs," said the towering defender, who scored the opener in the 10th minute.

"I did not play in the Rangers game, but it is not very good when a scoreline like that happens. It makes things worse through the week but the guys have worked well.

"We all had a point to prove but we bounced back and people can sit up and take notice now."

Walker netted the first from a rebound after Tony Caig saved a Craig Brewster header.

He also went on to supply the cross for Brewster`s second goal and Dunfermline`s fourth in the 58th minute.

However, he admitted he was lucky even to be on the park.

"I headed the back of someone`s head in an Under-21 match last week and had 12 stitches," said Walker. "I was surprised to be playing, especially when I found out what position I was playing.

"I think the manager changed it because he was not very happy at losing goals against Rangers, but it worked.

"For my sake, I hope he sticks with it but it is not about me, it is about the team."

Sandwiched between Walker`s strike and the fourth goal was Brewster`s first of the evening.

Caig dropped a Lee Bullen cross in the 28th minute and former Hibs striker Brewster tapped in the gift.
