Topic Originator: OzPar
Date:   Sat 25 Aug 14:27

Watching the live stream on Pars TV. A glorious sunny day to be down by the seaside by the look of things. Players are out warming up. Half an hour to kick-off.

Come on you Pars!

Ayr passing it well and pressing us with energy all over the park. Moffat buzzing about looking for any scraps. We're not finding our man, aren't pressing then at all and the front two aren't going much. Long way to go but it's been dire so far.

Poor start to the game, panic mode from defenders and midfield. Faz producing nothing, Ryan Williamson not gelling with his new partner on the right, he's missing Higgy.
We'll be lucky not to lose a couple more goals.

According to most on here weeks ago we didn’t need another striker. Think today shows we need more than a striker.

Seems like it was a good decision to just come to Methil!

Arbroath leading 2-0, plenty of ex-Pars on show (Wallace, Thomson, Graham, Smith, Kane, McBride)

Anyone who was confident today hadn't been monitoring Ayrs performances . Having said that we have been dire. I have been saying it for weeks we need another our and out striker. Playing high balls into Fais and Ryan just won't do.

Was going to say that the second goal was the worst defending you'll see all season but the third was even worse.

For the second here were four or five really weak challenges in a row, ball watching and the keeper was sluggish. The third though was like watching men against boys. Short pass by Craigan, weak as tissue paper attempt at a tackle by Durnan, an even weaker attempt by Ashcroft and we left the top scorer in the league almost the entire 18 yard box to score from.

I wouldn't blame any fan leaving at half-time, we don't have a clue what we're doing our there and you can't look at any player and say that they're doing OK. It's early in the season but this could be the end of any title ambitions, that's how awful a performance it is, and we're going to be at least 4 behind Ayr and Ross County already. The play offs are still there to aim at but we're currently third bottom and the signs aren't exactly looking promising.

As it stands with 45 mins to go we have already dropped 6 points out of 9
and our goals against are -4 the same as Falkirk
I cannot apprehend this at all looks like we only turn up and play every second game
1st game against Dundee utd played well deserved the win
2nd game against Ross County we were rubbish deserved what we got
3rd Game against Hearts played well should have won
4th and present game as it stands we are playing rubbish ( only quoting what people at the game are saying ) not there today in person and right now i am glad
hope the team come out in the 2nd half and have a go for all the fans who have made the long journey to support the team

1970par, depends which higgy decides to show up this week.

Fro what I saw of durnan against ross county he's a total cart horse, the next keddie. Come back morris all is forgiven!

Durnan and Williamson in a back 4, there's more goals in this for ayr if they want them.

Yet many were confidently predicting a win before the game today?

Ayr have been arguably THE form team so far this season and have a great defensive record.

Way too early to be writing our season off IMO.

Cheer up, Boreham Wood losing at home...
;)

Meanwhile, Arbroath now 3-0 up with a striking partnership of Ryan Wallace and Callum Smith. Wallace has been superb.

4-1. Johnston needs to have a good look at himself. Once again totally outdone by an older experienced manager and has a back and forth with Devine after subbing him in the first half. Need a centre back, full back and striker in as soon as possible.

I think because we beat Dundee United we thought we were league winners
or going to be in the top 4
Today is a reality check for us , you cannot give cheap goals away play bad and expect to win !
So it's credit to Ayr that they are just keeping their heads down and getting on with it !
realistically 4-1 is not good enough

That was as bad as anything from the Potter era. No energy in the first half, no tactical understanding or discipline with players just wandering about wherever they wanted, a sub that only helped increase uncertainty at the back, a strike force that barely had a shot on goal in the entire match, players making basic errors with passing and crossing, a lack of movement across the whole pitch, woeful set pieces, a lack of physical strength and some terrible game management. Truly awful.

ICT who drew with 10-man Alloa today? Just proves how competitive this league is likely to be this season.

We're three games into the season. Two weeks ago some folk on here were predicting Ross County would win the league by Christmas. They lost today.

We need to improve our form and consistency dramatically, but way too early to be predicting who will finish where this season IMO.

Before the season started I had concerns, most specifically with the defence. I didn’t think Durnan or Devine would work out well after hearing what sensible people who support the clubs they came from said. After the league cup group games and the win at United my fears were alleviated a little but now I’m growing worried again. Not panicking but concerned.

Did the players have a fall-out on the bus coming down? When they were warming up before the match they looked completely disinterested. And during the game there was no improvement in their mood.

That is the worst they have played in yonks. An absolute shocker.

Struggling to think of a single positive. Well maybe Connolly, who tried hard when he came on. Otherwise, Ayr totally bossed us.

Hopeless.

A really slow start, we couldn't handle Ayr's aggression and pressure. We were slowly getting back into I felt towards the middle of the half then AJ takes of Devine. We then let in two awful, awful goals.

Impossible task second half, looked like a clear penalty not given in the first minute, then we got a goal pretty quickly. Didn't really threaten after though, although both Longridge and Ryan dribbled the ball out of play when they should really have a got a shot off from dangerous positions. More comical defending for the fourth goal and Robinson was doing his best to give away another....

Most of the team were poor but Durnan and Ryan looked especially hopeless. Let's just hope it was a bad day at the office.

Just a bad day where things didn’t work out for us.

The exact same team competed so well against Hearts last week so we just need to get the consistency and mentality to perform every week and we’ll be fine.

Ayr didn’t play all that well today, they just took the chances they made. We didn’t play the game to our strengths, lots of balls in the air which suited Ayr well. I don’t actually think many of that Ayr team would start for us - we made them look a lot better than they actually played.

Hate that patter. The players absolutely WONT feel worse than the fans who have spent a fortune to travel a huge distance to watch a half arsed attempt at winning a game. There will be fans there today who have spent money they could only just afford and no more, in order to get there.

Where to start, let’s gloss over the defence that looked very brittle and error strewn. We had nothing in centre mid whatsoever, old man Kerr absolutely ran the show. There was no width apart from Jackson L who I thought had a god game and my MoM. And why punt cross after cross after cross into 5ft nothing strikers play it on the deck.
Can’t make up my mind if Ayr were really good. I don’t think they were ,they didn’t need to be.

Aye and that’s the players’ jobs, the culmination of a week of training and they get pumped. This is their actual career, no-one likes the feeling of doing badly at your job and they’ll be well aware of fans travelling and paying to watch them play - which can only make them feel worse.

What is bollocks? That the fans will be hurting more than the players? Half these players only arrived a couple of months ago, they aren’t Dunfermline fans & alot of them won’t be here next year. they haven’t got any connection with the club (yet). I can assure you that those fans who have spent money on their bus, £17 a ticket, £20 in the pub, £10 on food.. just to see us absolutely battered by a team of journeymen & face an hour and a half bus journey home, will feel worse right now.

Anyone who thought this league would be some sort of cakewalk has another think coming. Look at the fixtures. Every game this season has been a toughie. It's early days though. There are many candidates for promotion and I think Dunfermline could be one of them. The players just have to get used to working with each other and develop a bit of confidence. We saw a bit of it against Hearts. We've got talent - imho. It's just a matter of learning to play to our strengths.

Some have said that Ayr didn't play really all that well.

All I can say is thank f for that - 4-1 is bad enough.

My opinion is that we need to give Higgy a start. When he has made appearances as a sub in games before today, he has looked really sharp and if the midfield isn't performing, he at least provides some form of link up play.

One thing for sure is if we go through the season with one great game and then one rubbish game, we will never get past mid table.

Our problem today was poor defending. All three centre backs were poor at times. Seeing our captain diving in our penalty area to try and win a foul rather than put in a fair challenge was embarrassing and it cost us a goal.

It’s so hard to predict how we’ll do this season. We could be fighting up the top end or battling relegation. Who knows? One things for sure though is we definitely need to pull our fingers out. Today and the Ross County game were far from good enough. We need to sign a few defenders as what we’ve got at the back is not the answer and we need an out in out striker.

Add me to that group. Yes they pressed well and stroked it about confidently (although that was in part because we didn't press them at all) but I don't think they carved us open at all or played particularly good football. They didn't have to though. Three goals just gifted to them and one when we we're pushing for something in the second half.

I think we have to put things into context. Last year we got off to a flyer while other teams were still getting it together then a couple of confidence knocks and we couldn’t string anything together. Caley were bottom of the league I think and almost pinched a playoff place. I do also recall beating A rather inept St Mirren 3-0 who then won the league at a canter. There will be points dropped all over the show in this league but he needs to sort out his formation. This 3 5 2 isn’t working with what we have available and the players seem a bit lost at times. At tannadice it didn’t click until he moved to a 4 4 2. Wish we had kept big Jock as we could be doing with an old school clear out centre half. Long time to go, no need to sh@t the bed yet (even though today was a brutal result) and we know there is a performance in these players.

disagree on the first part, its the only option with what we have available at centre half and at tannadice we never played 442 at any point.

That’s the worst ive seen us under AJ, but let’s not be throwing the baby out the bath water just yet. At least today he tried to do something about it. I agree with his post match comments re the change of formation trying to do
Something about it. But I question why we started today with the 352 against Ayr who we always did well in the past with 442 - maybe AJ showing his inflexibility with that being his new preferred formation.

- Andy Ryan is not the right partner for Faissal. I’ve seen better control and first touch on an elephant trying to control a tennis ball. Been with us a year now and I struggle to see any progress. Many say we’ll miss Nicky Clark, today first time I have come round to agreeing.

- Danny Devine and Mark Durnan came to us with pretty strong health warnings from Thistle and United respectively. For all Morris’ bombscare moments, Durnans sauntering at goal 2 and then at three or four points today gave me the fear more than callum ever did. Devine had to be sacrificed to make the change in formation and his reaction if against AJ was out of order. If at his own poor performance then fair enough.

- creativity. With JV, LL and JC as our midfield, there was no creativity. No service to the strikers at all today. Worrying. Hippo came on and gave us directness where it had lacked.

3 league games in and plenty to work on, but he’s sorted it before so let’s give him a chance.

Embarrassing result today. I was expecting us to kick on from last weeks performance against Hearts. Where all the players done great against SPFL opposition and if it hadn’t been for their goalie making 4 great saves then we’d of embarrassed Hearts. I’ve only been to the Dundee & Ross County games this season which were two extremely different performances. This league is gonna be a strange one again & I won’t be worrying too much about this performance.

We’ve proved we can play good football against both Dundee teams this season.
Hopefully this is just a wee rocky patch and we can get a bit more consistent as AJ tweaks things. He’s obviously trying the 3-5-2 formation as he believes the players we have are cable of performing well but they seem to be getting pulled all over the pitch & don’t seem capable of concentrating on their defensive rolls. Against Ross County our defenders didn’t get the boot in quick enough & watched the stikers score. Concentration seems to be somewhat lacking at times with loose passes & defensive blunders but as the players settle in and get used to their duties this should stop.

I’m sure by the end of season we will be nowhere near the bottom of the table. A great start doesn’t secure a league championship, neither does a poor start destroy our chances of winning one.

It’s tough to take today’s result but I’m sure we will bounce back against Inverness next Saturday. And personally I can’t wait for the game and I’m sure the players feel likewise.

C’mon ye Pars!

Just watched the highlights. Moffat heavily involved in the first and third which still looks a tug on Ashcroft arm, but Craigen’s short pass back to Durnan (?) was never going to reach him.The fourth is even worse than the third, i’ll let you watch that for yourselves.

Losing poor goals and giving games away cheaply has been a bit of a theme over the last two seasons. Its not going to win champoinships thats for sure.we are capable of scoring goals but you have to be capable of defending well. On formations its like anything stick to what you know best and what works. If you have to change things its about small steps. People in any organistion dont like change and only change that is culturally feasible can be achieved. If you have players that dont believe in that formation it wont work.

The first one should have been a penalty, Ashcroft used his arm to nudge the ball away from Moffat. Good reaction by Moffat to spin and chip in the cross though. Who was meant to be marking Forrest?
