 Happy Days
Topic Originator: Bertiesback

Sitting here watching Watford's magnificent play and spirit against Tot Hot and without realising it, suddenly I was transported back in time to Bert's Pars team.

That team seemed to be a "force of nature" sometimes and the way they went for the jugular from the kick-off used to get the fans going to the extent the whole place was jumping...............just like Watford

They are not just physical but they can play, just like that Pars team.

I miss these days..........they always seemed to be sunny Saturdays and atmospheric Wednesday evenings.

Yip I loved 95-96 but the seasons before it weren't great. Rose tinted specs maybe?

Eh, I guess you're too young to remember the preceding seasons. High goal scoring exciting football in the Bert seasons that led to promotion. No rose tinted specs at all.

They were great times. I remember it clearly.

So do I. Been going for 33 years. Just not as great as some make out. Neither was the Calderwood era.

You're saying the years before Paton's promotion ''weren't great'' Sorry but I think you will struggle to find any agreement with that.

We lost the league due to a win going from 2-3 points, We lost a play-off to Aberdeen. We were top scorers in the UK at one point. All within those not so great seasons.

Aye I suppose you're right. It was a good time to go and watch the Pars after the Munro and Scott terms in charge. Just got a bit wound up by the OP which seemed a bit Ron Manager.

Were we not top scores in Europe during one of Bert's seasons?

I loved his time in charge. The gameplan was generally pretty simple. Decent wingers and aggressive full backs overlapping them in a 442. A target man that knew what he was supposed to be doing and (it seemed like) all the players playing for the jersey.

Maybe too simplistic for today's game, maybe not?

Not at all Blacklight, that's exactly how I saw it. We also had a pretty hard skilful boiler room (midfield) if I recall.
Marc Millar took no prisoners and neither did Robertson.

I think I will adopt Watford as my team in THE EPL. :)

The 95/96 season, we were in pole position with 5 games to go.

We lost 3-1 at home to - at the time - lowly Hamilton in a terrible display. The following week, we were 1-0 up at Dens and lost a last minute equaliser. We'd thrown away 2 points at Cappielow in the last minute 3 weeks before that too.

If dafc.net had been about, there would have been loads of folk saying we had no fight, no bottle, no organisation, no chance of ever seeing a game out ever again etc."

"We threw it away at Airdrie 2 years ago, we threw it away at Raith last year, now we're doing the same just earlier. Time to go Bert..."

I enjoyed Bertie's time as manager and his time as a player even more. He was classy and he could look after himself, too. His teams generally played positive, exciting attacking football. Didn't always get results, but good to watch.

The OP makes reference to Watford, which made me smile, because when I started an 'EPL Predictions' thread last month, a number of posters tipped them for relegation.........:-)
