 Boreham Wood turnstiles delay!

If you're still in the pub I suggest you leave now - the BWFC computer system is taking forever to process people through the turnstiles.

I think that our fans who arrived without ticket had to buy one using a credit card, this took time. Plus we had far more fans than what the were expecting. The guy who was sitting next to me was 540something, and he wasn't the last in. He told me that the poor guy on the gate said that he was told to expect 800. I don't think that we had that but looking at the away end we must have had a 700/300 split.

I know, it is only Micky Mouse clubs who suffer turnstile delays, would never happen to a club like the Mighty Dunfermline Athletic…..oh wait a minute!.

Must have been at least 700 Pars fans there yesterday.

Turnstyle delay was due to large numbers arriving around the same time without an advance ticket and paying by card.
There was no delay at the turnstyle for those with a ticket.
Scanning system worked ok.

"There was no delay at the turnstyle for those with a ticket."

Yes there was, these was only one queue before the (rather pointless) frisking and bag search. After that there was no queue but while searching bags is quite common (and there were a lot of people who had flown in and so had a rucksack with them with a change of clothes or whatever in them) I can't remember being frisked at a game before!

The bag search was necessary but clearly futile as it didn’t stop the numpty/ies letting off flares at the game. Can be seen on the BW highlights. Totally stupid and a potential hazard.
Might have some financial consequences for us.

As for frisking... I have been through two consecutive searches while visiting Stamford Bridge for a match as an away supporter.
A bit ironic as Chelsea have some of the most violent supporters in English football.

Doesn't matter what ye call it... It's still regarded as a pyrotechnic and has no place in a football ground.
Pyrotechnics form part of the explosives group, so if a product is a pyrotechnic, it is considered an explosive regardless of the type of pyrotechnic it is or the effect it produces e.g. smoke, fireball, flame, sparks etc...

My opinion on that is irrelevant.I'm saying that there's a glaring difference between flares and smoke cannisters which is quite obvious and for folk to keep quoting "flares",when they really mean "smoke cannisters" is just ridiculous and smacks greatly of over exagerrating the point.

Or maybe they just don't know the difference. It does happen... Ye ken!!!
My point is ... They all come under the bracket of "pyros" no matter what they are... And are inherently dangerous to those setting them off, and those in the vicinity.
I believe there are companies that sell these online. The solution would be for that loophole to be closed or regulated in some way.

As mentioned, doesn't matter what you call them - devices intended to produce smoke fall into the pyrotechnic classification.

Illegal to possess if under 18, and illegal to discharge in public.

Since 1986 (Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc.) Act 1985) it has been an offence for a person to be drunk in a designated sports ground at any time during the period (2 hours before the start and 1 hour after the finish, 15 minutes for private viewing rooms) of the sporting event at that ground or to be drunk while entering or trying to enter such a ground. It is also an offence to be drunk on a coach driving to the Ground.

Arrest the 700.

We also got there in time to avoid a delay at the turnstiles.

"Absolutely not. But using the “it’s illegal, don’t do it” line can be applied to hundreds of things people do in every day life."

Ludicrous attempt at justification.

If somebody is charged with speeding (for example) that line of defence will get you laughed out of court - best just to plead guilty.

"Creating a nuisance to others, I’ve heard nothing but positives and praise from everyone at Borehamwood and that message has been relayed by our chairman. But whatever suits your agenda."

Was there damage done to the playing surface at Borehamwood ?

If so, I doubt the groundsman and staff will share the positive vibes.

Found on a football fans website, seems pretty clear.
I actually think they add to the occasion and read an article recently where a Scottish police chief was prepared to consider safe use at grounds.

So let’s consoder the “drunk at a sporting ground” bit

The only measure of drunk (as far as I am aware) is being over the limit to drive a vehicle, therefore any person who has consumed more than half a pint should not be in a sports stadium

Best shut the place down then!

On the smoke bombs, I used to be all for them. I actually still think they add something so I don't want to criticise too much. I just know that if they were a regular feature at EEP my old man, and anyone else with breathing difficulties, would have to seriously think about staying home on a Saturday afternoon.

I was in the area they were set off in the first half. I could see the game and found it difficult to breathe. I also saw the idiot running around with one in his hand. I fail to see what the point of them is. Yes they may be safer than flares but they are in my opinion a waste of time.

For your standard fan that doesn’t stand where these things are let off, it does very little to enhance their experience.

However for fans that do stand there, these devices add a new dynamic and its all about putting on a display in the stands - check your Borussia Dortmund’s of the world etc, they use them to great effect and everyone loves what their fans do yet when Pars fans try to replicate even just a tad of what they do they are frowned upon.

For those moaning about them, did any of you approach anyone letting of these devices and challenge them? Failing that, did anyone report it to a steward?

With the size of the crowds that Borrusia get they'd have a good atmosphere anyway.

There are far more grounds where pyrotechnics are not used than where are and they manage to have a good experience.

What is this 'dynamic' mentioned above? And how do you know that everyone loves what their fans do?

I was at the Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund Champions League final at Wembley and I have to say as a neutral they added to the spectacle and the atmosphere-there were loads of them in both ends. They were all set off in sections that weren't near me so didn't spoil my enjoyment of the game. That was the Champions League final however, and setting one off in isolation in an Irn Bru cup game with a crowd of barely 1000 just looks a bit silly IMO.

The Lech Poznan Under 11 fans enjoy a pyrotechnic! :) Noticed a Scotland flag in their end too.

Okay take Borussia Dortmund away and we’ll go stateside. The likes of Orlando City have dedicated pyro zones and bare in mind they are American and aren’t supposed to understand football in the eyes of football traditionalists.

The dynamic is adding something different to your bog standard singing and flag waving

These are organised displays you speak of, and not just one or two fans "illegally" letting off smoke bombs/flares.

I've said before that I'd walk right up to, and point these people out to the polis/stewards if I see anyone doing it. I've twice confronted Pars fans for racist comments towards players too (away at hibs and rovers), and I'd do it again without hesitation.
Be absolutely assured if I see anyone setting off pyros I'll grab him/her myself, and stand as a witness to it.

So by adding to the atmosphere people are basically citing the likes of Dortmund, Galatasaray, whomever who get big crowds in huge areas anyway? How does letting off a smoke grenade/flare/pyrotechnic device amongst a crowd of a few thousand add to the atmosphere? How does it add to the dynamic (whatever that means)? Other than causing folks who do experience breathing difficulties or can't see the game properly having to move, I still can't see any impact it has on small crowds of the sort we get?

The acrid discharge these things produce irritate the eyes and breathing, the smell lingers on hair and clothes for a good while if you get a direct “contact” with the smoke.

Sounds enjoyable right enough.

Doesn't matter how many folk think that it "adds to the atmosphere" of a game or "adds something to the whole event" ... The fact is that entering a football ground in the UK with any sort of pyrotechnic is against the law.
There is no argument.... If ye want these things to become common place at the football.... Get the law changed.

I'm all for an organised pyro-zone in a full/fullish stadium, especially during night games. I think it adds to the aesthetics of the event and helps an atmosphere. I imagine it looks quite menacing for opposition players too.

Running around back and forth with one solitary flare at 3pm in Borehamwood in front of 1,000 fans - after a truly horrific game - is utterly pointless though. Throwing it on the pitch thereafter is just stupid.

I don't think any sane person can be wholly for them or wholly against them regardless of context.

Having said all that, it's a mate's big birthday tomorrow and I'm in a hospitality box. I might bring one in there just to see a foaming at the mouth Stevie bounding across the pitch, trying to gain entry so that he can make a citizens arrest...

Doing your best to antagonise things as usual I see. Bet you'd be way to cowardly to confront anyone doing this face to face.

“Ive said before that I'd walk right up to, and point these people out to the polis/stewards if I see anyone doing it.

Be absolutely assured if I see anyone setting off pyros I'll grab him/her myself, and stand as a witness to it.”

You sound like a great laugh mate.

You absolute animal.

I take it you guys would simply turn a blind eye to this regardless of the impact it "could potentially" have on the club as a whole?

Doesn’t bother me at all Stevie. If I had a problem with something I’d go and make that person aware. I wouldn’t hold them till the steward or police came and clipe. No one likes a grass.

We got style and we got grace

Litter louts maybe, but secret farters are fine with me. I've been known to drop a batch or two myself sometimes.
