Some result for Northern Ireland there too-beat Spain 2-1 away. Spain had 22 corners to 0 and 37 shots to 3!

Pity we blew it against Andorra and Latvia as we could be in a strong position to quality if we’d beaten them. Two tough games to go now against Ukraine and England. Outstanding result tonight though!

Hopefully England having easily won the group take it easy.
Ukraine game is massive though and a must win looking at the GD

Holland not out of it yet. They play Latvia and Ukraine in their final two fixtures. A draw for Ukraine and Scotland with a Dutch victory would see all 3 teams on 15 points heading into the final match-day. All to play for.

Thats true pup but they get pissed off when you say Holland so I always make s point of doing so. I did some work out there every month for 2 years and they persistently introduced me as English. They thought it was no big deal so Holland it is.

I understand the difference. I worked with the Dutch for over 30 years.

So why do UEFA, the Olympics, media etc refer to them as Holland in their competitions?

UEFA don't (neither do FIFA by the way), the Olympics don't, and the media is populated by idiots.

Well slap ma cake!

I call it Holland because it's shorter than The Netherlands and thus far I've never been misunderstood about.

I even drove to the country twice without getting confused, apart from seeing a jumbo jet appearing to taxi across the motorway I was on.
near Schipol.

Anyway great result for the young lads. Would be exceptional if they can qualify now.

"I call it Holland because it's shorter than The Netherlands and thus far I've never been misunderstood about. I even drove to the country twice without getting confused"

UK is shorter than England or Scotland or Great Britain - doesn't mean it's right. And to a foreigner UK/GB/England might well be interchangeable and foreigners would understand what they meant (or at least what they thought they meant). Since most people's experience of the Netherlands is visiting either North or South Holland, it isn't a big issue - maybe in the same way that a foreigner referring to the UK in England wouldn't hear many grumbles if they were visiting London or Birmingham or Manchester. Go to Friesland or Flevoland or Drenthe and you're more likely to get a different response.

To be fair, there is an element of leg-pulling going on since the Dutch government themselves occasionally use Holland when trying to get other nationalities to invest in their country, mainly as Holland has been used in much of the English speaking (and so business) world albeit incorrectly for so long.

"apart from seeing a jumbo jet appearing to taxi across the motorway I was on. near Schipol."

One thing the Dutch are masters at is using land to it's fullest extent. The new runway at Schipol is miles away and on the other side of the motorway from the terminal building. The taxiway over the motorway was an elegant solution. Their road over the polder (dam) that separates the North Sea from the inland seas near Amsterdam are also incredible. I'd love to drive over them one day.

"Anyway great result for the young lads. Would be exceptional if they can qualify now."

We've drawn in Andorra, drawn at home to Latvia and lost at home to Ukraine this campaign, so whike we've had excellent home-and-away wins over the Netherlands, these dropped points mean we'll still need some big results and other results going our way. We finish Ukraine (A) England (H) while the Dutch have Latvia (A) Ukraine (H). England can't be caught unless they somehow lose to a team who have only one win to their name at this level (Andorra).

Yes - hopefully England being through already will see them treat it as more of a training exercise but I wouldn't count on them doing us any favours. Winning in the Ukraine will be tough too, they beat us 2-0 in the game here (and of we're tied on points I think it goes to head to head which means of we draw we have to better and not match their result in their final game). The Netherlands aren't out of the running and look to have the easier closing games.

But it is in our hands right? I accept no less than 3 points vs Ukraine is needed as I dont see them losing their last game.
We made it hard for ourselves in typical fashion though.

I thought only the group winners qualified automatically with the four best runners-up going into a play-off. The results against the bottom team in a group are discounted in assessing the best runners-up.

Right enough, it's the 9 group winners and 8 best runners up go into the play offs.

It's the 9 group winners who qualify. Hosts Italy have already qualified. The 4 best runners up then go into a play off with the 2 winners going through. It's a 12 team tournament.

Thought I must have been wrong when I saw that I had 14 teams not 12. Was that you in the crowd I spotted when I watched the highlights of the game btw? There weren't too many Scotland fans by the looks of things but they managed to catch a wee group huddled together watching the game.
