 Dundee Utd v Ayr Utd
Topic Originator: wee eck
Date:   Fri 30 Nov 13:37

It's live on BBC Alba tonight; might be worth a watch. Mind you, there's strong competition from the FA Cup tie between Solihull Moors and Blackpool on BBC2.

Interestingly.... (or maybe not)
All Ayr utd's league games so far this season have ended up with either a 1-2 or 2-1 scoreline.
Carry on 😉

I recall in the season when Leicester won the league they beat Man city at the etihad. Thia was the point i and probably many people actually felt they could win it. Wonder if Ayr win tonight if more people will fancy them to win our league?

"Ayr United best 3 players in Geggan Moffat and shankland. All at Pars at some point."

Plus Steven Bell - one of the big tragedies of the last decade IMO, could have been a Premiership player had it not been for his injuries. Glad to see him playing again at this level, though.

Dundee United are truly clueless. Some of their defending is lamentable. On the other hand very impressed with Ayr: great movement, intelligent running. Can't see Dundee turning this around second half.

In fairness, Shankland apart, I wouldn't swap any of the former players on the park for their counterpart in the current Pars squad. We have better players. I would however, swap either manager- those guys look like they at least have something about them. AJ is just a passionless shell of a man. I'm not surprised he can't motivate the squad

Indeed but let’s not have any rewriting of .net history. I remember the thread vividly where AJ was getting torn to shreds for giving the guy a trial because he was a st Mirren reject. I also remember the joy on here when he’d decided not to offer a deal to Shankland.

Fair play to him he has turned his career around.

Ayr look like everything we're not - well organised at the back, tigerish in the midfield, clinical up front. They are pressing really well as a unit and as a result the Dundee Utd passing has been awful, even from the likes of Fyvie and Stanton who are usually decent in possession. They are clearly confident and every single player knows his position and his job. And this is them without the likes of Craig Moore and Allan Forest who are big players for them, and with Steven Bell playing as an auxiliary centre back. They could do a Livi, and I'm not looking forward to facing them. They've scored twice in the time it's taken me to write this FFS!

Don't think they'll necessarily crumble but it'll derail their title bid. They'll still finish in the top 4 tho

"Folk are explaining this result by saying Ayr are full of confidence but surely Dundee Utd were too after the run they've been on?"

Which folk?

"Ayr will crumble when Shankland leaves in January"

Why would they sell him? Nobody is going to put a big offer in when they can get him on a free in the summer, so Ayr will be as well keeping him since the prize money they can make even by finishing in the top four will make up for any fee they'd lose out on. That's of he wants to leave. He seems to be enjoying life at the moment and he's had his time at a big club without success.

He already turned down Premier clubs and English League 1 clubs in August. If he leaves them at all it will be on a pre-contract for the end of the season I reckon. If they sell in January they will hold out for a decent fee having recently rejected a 6 figure bid for him-more money than we have achieved for a player in years.Either way it's a decent scenario for Ayr.

It's one result. Neilson has had 5 wins and a draw out of 6 before tonight. In what way is sacking Shabba costly when his replacement has turned results around?

More chance Neilson will get them up than shabba.

The dormant stance our club is taking will result in reduced crowds and possible relegation.

What has Shabba got to do with this post? Sacking AJ and taking on Neilson would have been costly.
We will soon see if its a freak result or the bounce is over already.

I didn't see the game and I don't want to overstate my case, but I did notice Ayr scored inside 3 mins. I remember we got early goals against both St Mirren and Livi last season and went on to beat them both convincingly.

I'm always banging on about the importance of the first goal in any game and the stats back me up. I believe less than 20% of teams lose a game in which they open the scoring. (How else do can you explain QOS's 5-0 win v Ayr?)

In Ayr's case, we can factor in that they have a good manager who is getting the most out of individual players and everyone knows what's expected of them. They have a striker who is scoring for fun, aided by the most selfless striking partner I've ever seen. Winning games works wonders for confidence and morale. Remember too, this started in League 1 for many of those players. They now go into games believing and expecting to win them. They won't be fearful of losing and will easily manage to put the odd poor result behind them.

Ian McCall is obviously a huge part of their continuing success and deserves a lot of credit, as do Ayr for sticking with him when things weren't going so well. For all that he's a good manager, he's been sacked a few times, IIRC, including by last night's opponents, so he will have enjoyed that.

I'm looking forward to seeing Ayr at EEP. In previous seasons I thought they played some pretty brutal football against us, with a number of cloggers in their side, as Callum Fordyce will testify.

Unless we improve by the time Ayr comes, the score could be very embarrassing.

You're making the classic mistake of thinking that football is predictable, 97. I could cite you any number of examples in which the team wining the league has lost (sometimes at home) to a team that was relegated.

e. g. Celtic v Pars 0-1
Rangers v ICT 0-1

Not suggesting the Pars will go down, btw, just that football's a f@nny old game, Saint.
