 Most common name in squad
Topic Originator: ParsPryde

After the "excitement" of the final day window I have noted that we appear to have a thing (again) for guys named Ryan.

We now have 4 - Scully, Williamson, Blair and Andy. (I was sure we have a Ryan in the youth team but couldn't find them named)

Now I seem to recall we had the same a few seasons ago, Ryan Wallace, Thomson, Williamson and Scully (I think)

So my question(s) to you all is this?
Can you remember other name clusters the Pars have had and what is the maximum number we had in the squad (both youth and first team)

I'm sure we have had a name cluster of 6 or 7 but can't remember the names.

At the same time as the 4 Smiths, we also had 3 Robertsons - Bobby, Graeme and Craig.

As a Ryan myself, I’d guess it’ll be that now that people around their early to mid 20s are starting to become more prominant footballers and I believe back in the early to mid 90s Ryan was the 2nd most popular boys name, that’s why you’re seeing a lot of Ryans now. Happy to help.

We are seeing the fruits of the success of the Saving Private Ryan film from around that time, which led to unimaginative parents naming their kids Ryan. Same with Erin. There does seem to be more Liams too but not noticed much Noels, Damons or Jarvis's.

Looking at this from the opposite angle, I was wondering last night when was the last time we had a Bruce.

It's interesting how names go in and out of fashion. When I was a kid traditional names like John, James, William, Andrew etc were popular but they were usually shortened or adapted to Jock, Jim, Billy, Andy etc. Nowadays some of these names are still popular but the full name is retained, eg we have James Craigen and James Vincent in our squad. I wonder if anyone calls them Jim or Jimmy?

Eck was a common diminutive for Alex when I was a kid but now I come across a few youngsters who are called Alexander which is a bit of a mouthful.

Alexander is a great name Wee Eck, very versatile. You could be Alexander, Alex, Lex, Eck, Alec, Xander, Zander, Sandy, superb name for all occasions

We also had Ryans Goodfellow and Ferguson back then.

For the reserves, Lewis/Louis is the problem - McCann, Crosbie, Sawers, sometimes Martin and conceivably Longridge.

We had a few Andies at one time - Geggan, Dowie, Kirk and Barrowman, although some may have been Andrew.

James not being shortened to Jim may be more of an English thing.

red-star-par, I like Alessandro, sometimes abbreviated to Sandro which must be Italian for 'wee eck'!
