It seems a trifle hypocritical, all that outpouring of emotion as if he was their player and now they don't want to pay for him. Dishonourable?

He wouldn't have been on that plane if he hadn't signed for them so in a way it is their responsibility.

The whole thing has been handled horribly from Cardiff. Only defence I've really heard in their favour is that the plane he took was not on their recommendation or something.

Hope the whole thing just gets resolved soon as its quite disrespectful to Sala imo

I sincerely hope Cardiff get relegated now. What a despicable thing to do.

Turn on, Tune in, Drop out.

It just shows how fickle and superficial the football world is. They mourned his loss for several weeks. They wore black armbands. They had many minutes silence. Flowers were heaped up in his memory and now they won't do the honourable thing and stump up the transfer fee.

I dont know if it all happened too quickly but I would have expected them to have insurance to cover their players even covering tragic situations such as this.

On what grounds are Cardiff claiming the transfer deal is not legally binding on the club ?

The link won’t open.

What is their get out clause ?

Main gist:

The Bluebirds insist the terms of the contract maintains that if any parts of that arrangement were not confirmed, then the deal would be null and void.
They claim:

Ligue de Football Professionel had not contacted Cardiff either before or after 22 January.

The FAW did not confirm with Nantes.

The Ligue de Football Professional did not confirm with Nantes until 25 January.

It is thought the notifications clause was inserted because if the deal fell through, both Cardiff and Nantes would have had time to seek a new player before the January transfer window closed on 31 January.

BBC Sport has also learned arrangements for a signing-on fee did not meet Premier League rules and so had been rejected by the league.

A Cardiff spokesman would not comment on specific details but said: ''The club is aware of Fifa's request for a response by 3 April and is processing that accordingly. We have no further comment at this stage.''

Nantes say they completed all the necessary paperwork and have pointed out Fifa registered the international transfer certificate on 21 January.

They say they have been fully compliant with Fifa's rules.

I would have thought that they might have had an insurance of some type.

Financially, it could have been worse (and not wishing to trivialise the tragedy) but they could have been like Manchester United and signed Fred for £60 million.

"I would have thought that they might have had an insurance of some type."

like most policies there will be terms and conditions etc. Not sure if ever revealed but talk of pilot flying in violation of his pilot license and as such would void policy etc. Willie McKay (obviously NOT the agent brokering the deal) is very notable by his absence these days.

Willie McKay was up in court a few weeks ago on fraud charges under the Insolvency Act-not related to the Sala deal. The case was adjourned until this Thursday-faces 2 years in jail if found guilty

Would expect any life element of insurance would have an exclusion period before cover starts
