squad for next season - Good News/Bad News?
Topic Originator: ParsPryde
Date:   Thu 11 Apr 15:29

Since we are rapidly approaching the end of season and therefore contract negotiations, I had a quick look at our squad as listed in Transfer Markt
https://www.transfermarkt.com/dunfermline-athletic-fc/kader/verein/1270

Seems in our first team squad of 24, only 7 are contracted for next season.
In our reserves of 12, 6 contracted for next season.

So as we stand, we have 13 players for next season. So....

Is this a perfect time for a good old clear out and get rid of "dead wood"
i.e. GOOD NEWS!!! Yeah!!! Manager getting to make his own team now!

or are we likely to lose some of our important players and need to scramble around to get replacements at a cost!
i.e. BAD NEWS!!!! .... rebuilding a team from scratch... we're doomed!!

I suppose it depends on whether you see a glass half full (Yeah!) or half empty (Oh NO!!!)

I always worry at contract negotiation time! My personal feeling is that we will (hopefully) manage to keep 50% of our players and leave room to bring in 5 or 6 new players. With the option to promote some of the young lads from reserves... hoping that is enough to build our "new sparkling Crawford/Shields/Davidson team" for 2019-2020.

The players who have had the most impact on our season were the ones we had on loan.

Brilliant chance for stevie to shape his own team, I would suspect some of those who are contracted for next year might be free to move on if there’s anyone wanting to take them, well i’d hope so anyway.

Outside of loans, i’m struggling to think of who our important players are in this team? Craigan prob the only player who has come out of this season with any credit but that’s just for filling in at right back. There’s no one I would be gutted to lose but plenty I wouldnt be happy with if they somehow got another year.

Big changes needed! Hopefully can get Davidson’s input into new signing before he moves on.

Just sitting here drenched in my own positivity! AJ is gone!

I agree with both of you.

Not been impressed with Hippo and not sure I ever will be. Just hope he either moves on or stuns me with his efforts next season.. in which case i will eat humble pie.

However I do think that there are a couple of "under-performers" who might become "star performers" under our new management team. (Got a feeling that Fais may make a good pairing with a "new player" who can feed him good balls.) So I wouldn't want a wholesale exodus.

Fingers crossed we get a good combination of players in squad next season

I would love to keep Faissal and Anderson as I reckon with the right players feeding them, they could be superb. But of course they are both on loan, but here's hoping.

Oh yeah Faissal with his one league goal all season which was a penalty. Get rid!

Isn't Fais's contract with Dundee up at the end of the season, in which case he'll be a free agent?

Fais has been a massive disappointment this season. I was fully expecting him to weigh in with a fair few goals as we challenged for the title, but he has looked hopelessly out of his depth. There is a player in there somewhere but maybe League 1 is his level. With hindsight the money for his wages would have been better spent on Scott McDonald, he has the game intelligence that Fais (and most other players) can only dream of

Would definitely keep Faiss as he gives us that extra spark.
He would need a proven striker to link up with though if we can't get Anderson back on loan.

I would only keep faiss if we get a big target man in beside him. This means we need the target man in first, although Faiss lacks the positional awareness that comes from many years in the game so maybe if we want thing to change upfront we need better allround players. Or if he’s cheap he’s third choice.

Sick of watching long balls to midgets who have to feed off the scraps.

We should be offering Hippo terms to terminate contract. It hasn't worked out for the lad here. He can get a deal elsewhere as good as he has with us I reckon and a wee pay off. And we can get him off the wage bill.

McDonald is on about 2 grand a week at partick apparently. No chance we could have afforded him. Would keep Faissal next season, he’ll have to accept a much lesser wage than he’s on just now & I think he would be a good squad player. We need better for the first 11 though.

Strikers get judged on goals. Our main issue is goals this season. Faisal has scored one penalty and people want to maintain him. Madness. He’s played plenty of games.

Williamson will not be with us next season. Higgy has had enough chances this season, no guarantee you can get Anderson on loan again. Craigen I'll give you.

Scully, J longridge, Craigen, Beadling, Todd, Anderson were the only players that I'd keep from that team that played today. Anderson we probably won't have next season, but we need to be more creative, lumps up the park won't win us games when we have players under 6ft up top.

Yip, Blair will be back at Falkirk in the summer if he’s lucky.

I’d prob keep craigan as a squad player, not a right back anyway, works hard but not a winger or central midfielder so no place for him in a 442 here.

It’s a mammoth job turning this club round in the summer, I hope they are already speaking to folk.

Hopefully any players we get in on loan from "bigger clubs" next season should be for the full season . A bit of a risk perhaps but avoids disappointment of a player like Keena returning to his club when he finds a bit of form. I know someone will come back with Malaury Martin but as I said that's the risk.

You could easily make a case for starting again from scratch - risky as it would be (I know that some are contracted for another year).
Even some of those who have been least poor this season are replaceable:
Longridge - who at least has the look of a left back - is prone to costly errors. Under no pressure at all today he sliced the ball out of play and less than a minute later it was in our net courtesy of some poor defending from Ashcroft and (to be fair) a neat wee back heel.
Beadling - everyone wants him to do well but has he? He competes but is it enough?
Craigan - done well as a stopgap right back but doesn't drive the game forward enough in his natural midfield role for me.
Then there's the rest. You just know that the likes of Higgy, Fais, Muirhead, Hippo and the rest will benefit from a change of scene cause it just isn't working for them and they look really stale.

Could seriously pay me in a Bridie and Bovril per week and I'd do about the same job that Fais has this year. I'll run a lot, never score, bottle runs etc. Are we sure this isn't some random in a Faissal mask?

If I was the Aberdeen manager, I would not be sending Anderson back to us. We lump long balls to him and expect miracles. He'll never develop in that system

As much as he’s a fans favourite and works hard. 1 goal (penalty) in 25 games for Faiss this season is not the player we need if we are serious about trying to make a challenge for the league next season. Defo take Anderson back if we can somehow manage to agree a season loan with Aberdeen. But we need proven goalscorers at this level, sums up our season when our top scorer (permanent signing) is a left back. Only Anderson has scored more and he’s only been here since January.

The Fais loan has been a massive failure, as has Hippo's signing. Not Crawford's fault and I'd imagine we'll gladly send Fais back to Dundee and look to get hippo off the books too. Anderson is a proper striker but can't see him coming back next season.

If Fais was to sign for Ayr he would be a much improved player. There he would have Moff and Geggan helping him to score goals. I think he has tried his best as has Higgy but it hasn't worked for them. Paton and Joe are not there anymore to help them. Crawford has been left a squad of players that are just not good enough, I just hope that we are not in the playoff.

Keep -

Scully and Jackson

Thomson and Beadling in the midfield with a couple of speedy wingers who can beat a player and get a cross in would be good.

Id keep Andy Ryan and try find a decent partner for him up front.

Agree mach1, surely it shouldn’t be hard to improve on craigan at right back, Devine in centre back and any wingers are better than no wingers and I’d imagine a half decent striker would achieve more than faz.

Some half decent signings and you would like think we could compete for top 4 next season.

Keep:

Scully
Craigen (squad player)
J Longridge (2 year deal but would've kept anyway)
J Thomson
L Longridge (2 year deal but woud keep anyway)
Beadling (2 year deal)
Hippo (2 year deal, lets try and get the most out of him by playing him up front with an Anderson or other.....there's a player in there - he showed that at Tannadice first game of the season, but granted he's been honking the rest of the season)
Todd
Morrison (like to see him given a run pre-season)

Priorities must be a right back, two centre halves (at least one with pace), WINGERS and someone who can score the goals.

Good luck Stevie (or preferably a other)

I don't want to go down the route of ''keep'' and ''get rid'', but there's little doubt that the squad of players we have this season have not been able to match the fans hopes or expectations and - safe to say - the BoD's targets. There are some mitigating circumstances. We've had more than our fair share of long term injuries and players needing operations, which hasn't helped and some players who were brought in last summer have not performed at the levels hoped for.

This led to the inevitable removal of AJ, but although SC has managed to steady the ship and take us to within a whisker of safety from relegation, he's not been able to sneak us into the play offs - something which looked possible until a few weeks ago.

I think it's 99% certain that the management team will be in place for next season. How well they do will depend on how well the new players they bring in gel and which players they release. When AJ arrived, I think every player who was out of contract was released but Lewis Spence was told he could come back for pre-season training if he didn't find a club, meaning we had 10 signed players.

Could be a similar scenario next month.....

My bad, thought they both got two year deals.

Louis is a technically gifted player but wouldn't suit a 4-4-2, not a winger and not a central midfielder. Maybe as a number 10 in behind a striker in a 4-4-1-1 but I'd have no issues if he leaves to free up wages for a regular (quality) starter every week.

Would love us to bring in McDaid from Ayr. Pace and trickery (with a goal or two) down the right flank is just what we need.

Phew! Louis is pretty much higgy mkII.

Ive had enough of first time fancy flicks or World Cup through balls which give the ball away 99 out of 100.

Craw looks like a 442 man which means wingers will be brought in and all these false number 10 types will be punted.
