 Ajax v Spurs
Topic Originator: GG Riva

I'm not embarrassed to say that - along with a good few others - I completely wrote off Liverpool's chances before the game last night, so much so that I didn't start a thread until they were 3-0 up.

Have I learned my lesson? Err... no. ☹

I can't see Ajax letting Spurs off the hook in the Amsterdam Arena. Almost every memorable comeback has taken place on the triumphant club's home ground, although earlier this season Ajax went to the Bernabeu and overturned Real's first leg win - and how, winning 4-1 after losing (undeservedly) 2-1 at home.

Another semi-final, another unlikely result? I won't be putting any money on it.

Any chance Jackie Mac has built up some contacts at the Ajax academy to bring in these young players on the up !! A De Ligt or a Van de Beek would do nicely

I hear Jackie Mac has a couple of young Dutch players who might come for trial, one who seems driven for success is Hertz van Rental and the other is Chris Musampa who has all the ingredients to have a successful career although we may have to wait til December to bring him in.

Just sitting here drenched in my own negativity!

Maybe we could start saving up for Musampa now with the lifeline money. Put a wee bit by each month. 😉

Unbelievable. What a second half performance. I think that's even better than Liverpool last night.

Great result for the mighty reds. Would much rather play spurs in the final.

This will devestate Ajax more than the clubs who are going to pillage their talent. That was a once in a generation chance to make it to the final and they ultimately blew it.

Not very long ago there was a thread on here about having little interest in Champion's League football.

The last two nights have surely redressed any claims about it being boring.

Liverpool and Spurs punters could have made a fortune at the bookies with these two incredible games. Both English teams 3-0 down on aggregate and both come back to win.
What would the double have paid out?

Nice early holiday in Spain for those lucky fans. It could sell out twice over I think.
If only there was some Scottish involvement. Don't think there are n any Jocks in either squad.
Compared with previous great Liverpool and Spurs team who had several Jocks in their first teams.

The ultra pragmatic GG just couldn't see lightning strike twice. I suppose at half time none of us would have given Spurs a chance but these are extraordinary days. Only question now is who to support in the final. I usually go for the team with the most Scots.

Personally I hate the group stage format. Only gets interesting when the old fashioned knock out rounds get going

Apologies about forgetting the injured Robertson for Liddypool.

Yes, hope he can make the final too.

Indeed. I'll never try to predict a football match again...... until the next time. 😉

Sadly for me, I got a phone call from a friend who has mental health problems just before half time. It lasted the best part of 2hrs, meaning I missed the rest of the game. I went to bed straight afterwards, not even bothering to check the score....

Just seen it now. Wow! Just Wow! Can someone please confirm that I'm wide awake and this is not a dream? Remember Sir Fergie's comment after their CL win over Bayern? "Football. Bloody hell!"

I've just watched the highlights - that's some achievement by Spurs. Ajax are a very classy young side. Hard to say whether this tops Liverpool's comeback. Liverpool came from 3 down to win in 90 mins. Spurs were also 3 down and came back to win in 45 mins - albeit on away goals - but they were also the away team, so kudos to them.

Delighted for Spurs and the charismatic Pochettino, but would have liked to have seen Ajax in the final. I thought they were a stick on after knocking out Real and Juve. Their brilliant young team will now be plundered by the super rich clubs, the way Monaco were a few seasons ago.

Very annoyed that Spurs of all teams were the ones to put Ajax out but at the same time it's quite amusing that they way they came back into the tie was to stick a big lump up front in Llorente to noise yo the classy Ajax back four. It's almost like the tippy tappy possession for the sake of possession isn't quite the be all and end all some football hipsters think it is. Still hope Liverpool win the final though.

There is a new tactic being deployed by English teams in the knockout stages of the champions league. It seems they have been told to let the opposition get a 3 goal lead to get them into a false sense of security and then when they think the tie is all wrapped up to go out with all guns blazing and overturn the deficit. Maybe we can try this at EEP next season.
