 16th May 1979.

Andy Rolland scores the tense penalty to equalise the Perry goal for Falkirk, and the Pars are promoted from the Second Division before a then record 6000 Gate.

Andy ,famously ,said that, had be missed,he was going to walk out of the stadium, down Halbeath Road, and never look back.

Happy Days!!

Oh and Berwick Rangers won the League. They were happier days for them too.

I wonder how many older Pars Fans recognised the date immediately?

I was there - but had forgotten the date. Even meandered onto the pitch after full time whistle if I recall. Andy Rolland was in hospitality as the guest speaker a few months ago ( Dundee Utd game that was called off) and was talking about it.

Can still picture that penalty.

Was that the game that Salton ( ?) went off injured and Bobby Robertson moved from full back to centre half and was absolutely outstanding?

Mind it vividly, really tense, boak inducing game. A few Pars players turned their backs at the pen, couldn't bear to look.

It was a either a Monday or Tuesday evening. I was on a coach of S3 pupils coming back from Islay. I was a very young teacher at that time!

It was a Tuesday night if I mind right.

Yes, Salton was crocked early doors and Dr. Bobby filled in at centre Half and had a blinder.

Paul Donnelly was also outstanding that night, ran his guts out and covered every blade of grass over the full 90 minutes.

It was “Bomber” Brown who handled a goal bound shot for the penalty. I think he was booked - nowadays a red.

I think Andy Rolland was a postie after being freed by Dundee United and did a round before turning out for the Pars that night.

If memory serves, we only needed a point for promotion, Falkirk needed the win.

Happy days !!!

John Salton was carried off.Mike Leonard was our top scorer.Kenny Thomson played in every match and was Player Of The Year.

The 1-0 win over Berwick Rangers was on the 13th.My apologies.

The date seems to have become a movable feast scenario !!!

Was a proportion of the attendance absentee ST holders !!!

Mine went years ago !!!

No need to apologise.

Apart from the 3 day week emergency of the early 1970s I don’t ever mind a Sunday match in lower league days.

There was a cup tie at Brockville circa 1972 though.

I have a vague recollection that a man died of a heart attack in the stand that night.

No need for apology. Its easy to get dates mixed up.
A great outcome that night, tinged with sadness because the groundsman died after the game.

I was there too and it was certainly a weekday evening fixture. My memory is that I was standing at the old Cowdenbeath end as the penalty went in. Happy days!

We beat Berwick 1-0 just before this, I'm sure that was on the Sunday.

Can’t think why there would be a Sunday game in 1979 unless there was a fixture backlog.

Was that the season Falkirk had an away cup tie (v Aberdeen ?) postponed time and again until the match eventually took precedence over league games ?

Maybe that’s why we ended up playing them on a midweek night in mid May ?

I think that cup game eventually reached a record for the number of postponements.

Could be a load of blether of course !!!

Update - mostly correct(ish) thanks to Google, it was Inverness Thistle v Falkirk, Scottish Cup second round, postponed a U.K. record 29 times.

Conditions described as “artic” so that presumably was a very bad winter causing a fixture pile up.

Anybody mind it more clearly ?

Terrible, yet brilliant, winter. The High was shut for a week and a half after the Christmas holidays.

My mention of playing the game on a Sunday was simply going by the original date of 13th that Sliema quoted. My recollection was that it was midweek but I bowed to Sliema's (usually) accurate memory.

Didn’t recall the significance of that date either
Was there and the only thing I remember was Andy’s penalty. Taken at the cowden end. Side foot, high to the goalie’s left?

Rolland used to put them in the postage stamp too right mostly, but iirc this was mid height. I also seem to recall a few hitting the bar.

Aye, Cowdenbeath end, Jim Scott with a cross cum shot which looked to me at the time to be going over the bar but was tipped over by the falkirk defender.

Being on the pitch afterwards and taking a wee bit turf (as a momento of the night) to primary school with me next morning are fond memories too.

How many of you golden oldies remember that Falkirk lost 3-0 at home to the Blue Brazil in their previous game to concede the promotion initiative to the Pars in the final game?

The talk among the fans in the North Enclosure where I stood, was that Falkirk had thrown the game because they didn't want to go up as they couldn't afford the higher wages for the players.

They put us under a lot of pressure at the start of the game and hit the post twice in the first 20 mins, which prompted me to comment that if the didn't want to go up, they were going a funny way about it.

Some of you guys should form an eggheads team.

With the memory and recall you have for football, quizzing would be a breeze!
.
16th May 1979, my only memory is a broad one that I was in the yard in Ras Tanura and it was already 40C plus and humid. No other details remain.

I would love to see "Quizball" brought back.

And that is another reference which will have young fans scratching their head.
