Ex Dundee united and Falkirk midgielder heading to east end according to Scottish sun online. Decent experienced player, sure can play full back too.

Experienced but not quality. My recollection of him is that he lacks pace and ability to make a pass. Maybe OK positionally though. I thought that this was the type of player (been around the Championship) that Crawford wasn't wanting at the club.

One of the experienced players Crawford had mentioned.

Gather he was poor last season but was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes towards the end. Always rated him in the past and I understand he has a friendship with Kyle Turner. Could be a good move.

Just throwing it out there but I reckon he could be made captain if/when he comes in.

No player in our team has his level of experience and he’s been part of a team who have been promoted so he certainly knows what it takes.

There's a McNamara connection. Jackie was his manager at Partick Thistle and Dundee Utd. He used to be a bit of a hothead

Played a lot of games at a higher level and seems to be the type off player we’ve maybe lacked. Falkirk fans certainly disappointed and said he tried his best in a bad team on Twitter.

He’ll compete with Beadling and Turner for a midfield of 2 I’d presume.

Some experience to add to the dressing room can only be good.

Crawford has mentioned Turner playing in a wide role, not as a winger, so can see all 3 playing. yes there is a link to McNamara but the "experienced" pool to choose from isn't deep and Paton does tick some of the boxes, good luck to him if it does happen.

If that's ever a reason to doubt this signing. That Falkirk team was rancid, you'd have to be phenomenal to do anything in that side.

It is good that we have the majority of our business done before the pre season training starts. Gives the new look squad longer to gel together. Probably only 3 or 4 more players from what will be our final squad. Hopefully we can add a left back to provide competition, a left winger and probably another centre midfielder.

According to COWS he asked to be released from his contract with Falkirk so presumably they agreed and no transfer fee would be payable.

Played with Shields previously so clearly a character the management team know well.

Squads starting to shape up now. Wouldn’t worry too much what the Grangemouth lot think of him, they’re not known for being complimentary on ex players that come here....(sometimes with good reason but hopefully not the case here )

why does Crawford always look like he's just had his photo taken at a dogging hotspot in these things?

Sure he was playing left back for Falkirk in one of the games at east end, strolled it but we didn't have anything to trouble. Decent cover but would have preferred someone coming down from a higher level rather than someone who has already come down a year or 2 ago and might have already lost his legs.

Just sitting here drenched in my own negativity!

and Berkey might have just found his midfielder to slate every week...

on the players coming down from a higher level, said earlier the pool wasn't deep, from the higher level there are even less options if any.

I suppose he might be a good older head to have in the dressing room to help the youngsters with their development but he's not a player I can see improving the playing side of things except maybe as the new Craigan, filling in at full back, defence or defensive midfield when we're a bit short during the season. Our strategy of signing players not good enough to stay in this division or get promoted into it is certainly an interesting one! ;)

So the old theory that you should never sign a player from a club that's been relegated has been resurrected. The same thing was said about Declan McManus when we signed him from the Rovers and he'll be playing in the Premiership next season. Surely it's possible to have good players playing in a poor team?

Im sure that it wluld have been difficult for any player in a team fighting relegation. That doesn't make them bad players. At the end of the day its how they interact as a team. Im sure that they have done their homework and he is the type of player we need. Its about the all round benefits a player brings to the club.

Wee eck’s point about good players in a bad team was never more relevant when we played Cowdenbeath in a relegation play off, just Kane Hemings and Greg Stewart up front for them that day.
However at 32 it’s a gamble that he’s still performing at this standard, because he certainly wasn’t last season.

Didn't get rated by Falkirk fans but they're as bad as our fans in judging player quality. Had good pedigree before his time at Falkirk and hopefully his experience will help out the younger guys in the squad to improve. Every team needs a player like that imo, as long as we cover for his pace he'll do absolutely fine.

So what we are hearing is he has a great football brain and can make a pass that will do me.

If his legs are gone don’t worry we have a bunch of youthful midfields that can do that part.

I think what is also invaluable is his experience

A limited player, that’s aware of his limitations, is better for the team than a good player that thinks he’s brilliant.

Honestly got fed up of guys like Higgy trying the spectacular every time he got the ball. Undoubtedly talented, but he thought he was a lot better than he was, which very often resulted in giving the ball away.

Totally agree Berry, that was one of the most natural, relaxed interviews I’ve heard from a player. Obviously got a good sense of humour which will be good for the dressing room, and seems to know his own strengths and weaknesses. I also take from it that he knows the reputation our fans have for getting on our teams backs.

This happens at every football club. I thought the fans were brilliant last season relative to the product on the park.

I think the most telling thing for me in his interview highlighted the plight of clubs the size of ourselves, Raith, Falkirk, the Dundee teams etc. A highly competitive league such as the championship is counter intuitive as clubs of our size who are relegated really have to cut their cloth in terms of salaries and other running costs. The lack of all round investment in the sport including income from gates etc. will lead to more and more part time clubs to enable players to supplement their income from other employment. The game needs a fundamental no holds barred review to determine its future direction and long term sustainability.

Agreed Sergio. For some reason, some of our fans think we are the only club with a negative fan base when we are not playing well. I thought our fans were very tolerant at games last season.

I was concerned about Paton signing, at first but after thinking about it this could turn out to be a very decent signing for us. Always gives 100% in games.
