 U21 European championships

Not watched much of this as I have been watching ladies world cup, watched Romania v Croatia today with the Romanians coming out 4-1 winners.
Romania looked superb, especially Ianis Hagi.

I was wondering if any dot netters knew if he was related to Gheorghe Hagi. I know he is still a young lad but he looks like the real deal.

England v France tonight at 8 on sky sports but I will be watching Italy v Brazil ladies.

East End Park is a symbol of all that is DAFC.

There will be few squads that will look as impressive as England's. At least in terms of first team appearances in a European top league.

Turn on, Tune in, Drop out.

One nil to. England. And that's without the likes of Alexander-Arnold, Rashford, Joe Gomez and Declan Rice. Frightening.

Turn on, Tune in, Drop out.

Romania played very well, it will still be difficult to get out the group though with France and England.

Ianis is clearly the highest profile of what is currently a very promising crop of younger players a lot of which will be/are already first choice for the full national side. Ianis is a particularly exciting prospect because he is brilliant with both feet, he can hit free kicks, pass and shoot from outside the box with either. He had a year at Fiorentina but didn't manage to get in the team, he has been back at his Dad's team Viitorul this year and he has started producing the goals and assists he needs. He will move on somewhere in the summer, it will be interesting to see where he goes.

Of the others to look out for Tudor Baluta (the big defensive midfielder who has joined Brighton) and Ionut Radu (goalkeeper who was Genoa's number one last year) are probably the most likely to make a big impact in a major European league.

Great credit has to go to his Dad though as many of the squad have come through his football club Viitorul (translates as Future) Constanta (which is essentially a youth academy - his intention is solely to develop players and they make little effort to hold on to them to make large sums of money). They almost immediately sell players to what is left of Steaua Bucharest and other teams but immediately there are more young players ready to step up. Gheorghe Hagi has invested a lot of his money into Viitorul, they have great facilities, a big youth system and they play in high level UEFA competitions.

In the last 20 years or so there has (like Scotland) been little to cheer about for Romania so it is great for everyone here to have a new generation to get excited about. They will have a good backing over in Italy with all the Romanians that live out there as well, fingers crossed they can at least turn over England!

Cheers guys, Bucuresti , the comentators kept mentioning the kids have been together from a young age but never mentioned the Gheorghe Hagi academy. It seems to be working as they looked like a well drilled club side rather than an u21 iternational team.

Of the team that started yesterday 4 came through Viitorul's youth system and one of the subs that came on. There are a couple of others in the squad. Razvan Marin (who moved to Ajax recently) should also be there but Ajax refused to let him play. There are also a few other players that have also featured in the full national team from Viitorul that are a little older.

There are other clubs that are also good at producing players, the problem has been recently that after one or maybe one and half good seasons over here, they have gone to bigger leagues and not achieved much. This generation looks like they have a better mentality so hopefully they will achieve more.

The media have got a little over excited over here though, the next two games will be much tougher.

:) They certainly are!

Quite a contrast from the full national team, who struggle to qualify and then get turned over by Albania. To top a group with Portugal to qualify and beat England and Croatia in a major finals is a massive achievement even if they manage nothing else.

To have 28% possession and win 4-2, it was just about the perfect storm. Radu made some great saves, Henderson let in a shocking goal, a couple of beautiful strikes after poor English clearances and some bad English finishing. Also Aidy Boothroyd helped a lot by leaving Foden, Abraham and Sessegnon on the bench.
It was very much a team effort again, hopefully we will see a young Pars team playing with the same fire next season.

I’m sure I read somewhere recently that England have the best crop of young players in the world. They’ll never learn.
