 Oran Kearney
Topic Originator: wee eck

Apparently he didn't turn up for the first day of St Mirren's pre-season training today, fuelling speculation that he is leaving his post as manager. He seems to have a difficult relationship with the chairman which has come to a head as Kearney wants to commute DAILY to and from his family home in N Ireland. That hardly sounds practical.

he was told not to by the club.

Its a 35min flight surely no club club can request and enforce where employee stays

Didn't Dundee United insist on players living within a certain distance of Tannadice at one time?

It would take longer from Edinburgh than at present.

Think it was Jim McLean who insisted players stayed nearby.

Think he only wanted to go home at the weekend after the game and return at the start of the week

Owner wanted him to move to Scotland

The report I read said he only commuted at weekends last season but he wanted to commute daily this coming season.

If he was paying his own way and not interfering with training schedules etc, I don't know what the problem is.
His family come first rightly so and given the short term lifespans of managers, he maybe thought it wrong to upheave his family and kids away from their home, school and perhaps his wife's career?

If you only turn up to moan then do it elsewhere

How does he cope with midweek games, scouting teams and players, watching youth players training etc? Everybody knows football management isn't a 9 to 5 job.

So a 2 or 3 hour commute each way daily, assuming weather is good/landing slots not full.

Not possible for a normal office job, completely impossible when games finish at 22.00 or later-so extra time in the Cup? does he skip it because he has to get a taxi to the airport.

I think it's fairly obvious to anyone with common sense a midweek game means staying put for the night.

I just think he is holding out to be sacked-it's completely impossible to do.

St Mirren sack managers at a drop of a hat anyway-so he would get a pay off.

He is a football manager for heaven's sake, all the best getting a lifetime career being a football manager in the precise location in Ireland he wants to live.

Surely the terms and conditions of his appointment were negotiated by both parties before he accepted the post ?

Trying to retrospectively have the club agree to allow him to commute daily from Belfast is out of order, if that's how it has transpired.

I could be wrong but I doubt if the managers living arrangements would be discussed in contract negotiations as standard. My employers couldn't care less if I lived on the moon as long as the requisite hours were done. Surely unless the employer can prove that it's detrimental to performance then it is discrimination?

If it's his own time and money I can't see a problem.

Surely it would be remiss of the St Mirren board of directors if they didn't discuss with a prospective new manager who wasn't local what his intentions were regarding living arrangements?

His living arrangements haven't changed. He was commuting all the way through last season-the chairman now wanted him to move to Scotland and he refused to uproot his wife and kids. As far as I can see it's St Mirren who have moved the goalposts unless they stipulated that he must move after a season in charge.Perhaps just looking for an excuse to get rid of him knowing fine well he was unlikely to agree?

The version I read said that he bought a house in Paisley where he lived during the week and he visited his family in NI at the weekend. However he has now sold that house and wants to commute daily.

Wee eck .
I would think in these circumstances he would stay at a hotel or with friends .
I dont see the issue for him to travel daily as long as he is at his place of work as per contract .

Unless the club are paying him 24-7 then it is not their buisness where he lives .
They employ the man they dont own him

I suppose none of us knows what his contract says. I've just heard the head of the St Mirren supporters' organisation say the fans don't really know how Kearney's travelling impacts on the job he's doing. It seems he's leaving 'by mutual consent'.

35 minute flight into Paisley Airport and 10 minute to the ground, a commute most punters would take any day of the week.

I knew a guy who did a 2 year contract at Canary Wharf he lived in Broxburn and commuted every day from Edinburgh to London City airport and most nights he was home before his wife who worked in Glasgow they both left the house at 6.15 each morning to be home about 6.30.

Sounds like it works for all here.

Kearney was Full Time P.E. teacher and PT Coleraine manager-so he can go back to that-not much choice tbh......

Almost certainly more money that way than being FT St Mirren manager, as for security....

plus he gets to be with his family that way, clearly being a FT manager is impossible for him,

Plenty good PT managers anyway.

See Tony Fitzpatrick is just as much of a media car crash as he was 20 years ago as manager.

It's like a mixture of Yorkston and Derek Ferguson when a camera goes in front of him.

He's part time and enjoys his job outside football from what I've read.

I saw five minutes of "The Nine" for the first time tonight: "St Mirren have given Alloa permission to talk to Jim Goodwin".

It wasn't even the same lassie that thought we were them at Tannadice a few years ago.

So they want to appoint a PT manager with a FT job, having previously appointed a PT manager with a FT job.

Jim Goodwin is from Waterford, so is that close enough to commute?

That's going to be tough for Alloa, a good wee club, bit late in the day to replace.
