 Scottish Teams in Europe
Topic Originator: Berry
Date:   Tue 9 Jul 20:16

Both in Europe tonight for those that are remotely interested.

Rangers won comfortably and Celtic beating Sarajevo at the moment 2-1.

Good results, could we see some more progress in Europe for Scottish clubs this season?

Aberdeen winning 1-0. Kilmarnock knicked an away goal and 1-1 against Connah's Quay.

Not bad so far.

Bit of a sucker punch for Aberdeen at the end there. Did not deserve to lose that goal. Hopefully they can still goto Finland and get the result.

Aberdeen scrape a 2-1 win against the mighty RoPS Rovaniemi of Lapland? Sounds like a part time outfit or even amateurs. Aberdeen who beat Real Madrid in the final of the Cup winners Cup. What have we come to? At least Killie won away from home but a 1-0 will do for the mighty RoPS.

Considering are actually a solid team in their league, but don't let your ignorance of foreign leagues get in the way of posting crap. 4 wins out of 4 in Europe so far is far better than Scotland have seen in recent years

The relevance it has widtink, is to give a measure of how far we have fallen as a footballing nation. Aberdeen and all of our Euefa representatives apart from the OF have proven totally inept for many years now. But even so, surely we can knock a few more goals past a team from Lapland.

Kind of grandiose referring to these games as in Europe Andrew. These early rounds are purely for getting rid of the no hopers from Gibraltar, Luxembourg and Lapland, where the average home gate doesn't exceed 50 and the teams are made up of butchers, bakers and candlestick makers.

So you're saying you've just realised that Scottish teams (outside the so called OF) aren't as good as they used to be when it comes to competing in europe.
Have you been living on the moon? 🤣

I suppose we are all aware there's been a slide... but sometimes putting a measure on it really defines the extent of how much of a gap had opened up

Anyone know when the last time that all Scottish teams in Europe won their first matches? Had a quick look and think it was the 2003/04 season!

2003/2004 season
Celtic, Hearts & Dundee won opening games.
Glasgow Rangers drew 1-1, must be even further back for the answer.

No, widtink, thanks for the suggestion but I haven't just realised that. The point I am making is that while some years ago Aberdeen were taking an early knockout from teams such as the "mighty" Hertha Berlin, who were giants in Europe, according to Ebbe Skovdahl (although their achievements were minimal compared to Aberdeen's). Now they are in danger of an early knockout from the "mighty" RoPS Rovaniemi. Surely the subtlety of the point is evident to you.

At least R and C tend to scrape through to the group stages, apart from a bit of a setback in Luxembourg a couple of years back. Celtic's recent form against any teams with a bit of class has emphasised the huge gap between the best in Scotland and the top European teams. A few years ago Celtic were beating the top teams in their home legs and more recently have been losing at home and getting hammered in the away leg. Possibly Brendan Rogers had something to do with that. He set his team up to win in Scotland but seemed clueless in Europe.

Since football has become more of a commercial entity, teams from a nation with a small population are now doing less well. Is that the conclusion you're coming to?

I think you're doing teams like RoPS Rovaniemi a disservice by assuming that just cos we've never heard of them, Aberdeen should be beating them.
As Craig Brown used to say... "there's no easy games in international football these days ".
The top two aside, Scottish football is poor... And it has been poor for a long time now. It hasn't just happened overnight.
I also think your missing the point that you're comparing teams like current Aberdeen to Aberdeen of the past when it's just not relevant in any way.
Just my opinion of course... You don't have to agree with it.😊

Generally, Rusty, the teams that generate the most income (or the teams in the leagues that generate the most income) can buy the better players and tend to succeed. But then it comes down to skillful management of the best players and a bit of luck regarding injuries etc. In the distant past great management could produce great success at home and in Europe with a minimal budget and relatively ordinary players. It now seems almost impossible for a club from a less prestigious or wealthy league to progress very far in Europe. I think the nearest we saw to that last season was Ajax reaching the semi final of the Champions league from one of the less prestigious leagues but I reckon that was down to a bit of good fortune in getting a good crop of young players who just blended together and came up with the good when it mattered.

I think that the problem is two fold - Scottish football has failed to progress and arguably even gone backwards, whereas many smaller European countries have made great strides in the 50+ years I've been watching the Pars.

Scottish clubs were never eliminated from Europe by teams from a small country in the 60s, whereas now it's a common occurrence. I remember the Pars knocking out APOEL of Cyprus 12-1 on aggregate in 68. Now they're often playing in the CL.

Why this transformation has taken place is up for debate.

In 1967 Scottish sides contested both the major Euro finals with Scottish managers and, off the top of my head, only one non Scot player.
The chances of that happening again are slimmer than me ever being slim again.

Aberdeen looked as if they had no ambition to win tonight and must have been hit with a sucker punch late goal. The gulf between the big Glasgow boys and the rest is vast but some of that is down to lack of determination.

Nonsense...
I'm sure the players at Aberdeen are just as ambitious as the players that are at Celtic /Newco.
It's just the Glasgow lot can buy (slightly) better players than the rest cos they have a bigger budget.
Aberdeen are a half decent team on their day... But sadly their days are few and far between. Another top half of the Premiership finish for them this season.
Europe wise... No chance unfortunately.

Just very frustrating Widtink, the acid test for Scottish teams is how they perform in Europe and yet again there are only two teams that look like getting past the diddy teams.

Weren't Aberdeen up against the runners up to the Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb? Croatia the world cup runner up. I'd hardly call one of the best teams from country as diddy.

None. Reijka have got a good home record to be fair (when Aberdeen beat them 3-0 over there a few years back it was their only home loss in Europe over a good few seasons IIRC) and the uncertainty about McKenna can't have helped.
