If someone who isn’t the best centre back in Europe is with £80M then what is Andy Robertson now worth?

Robertson is Scottish, McGuire is English. The 'English Premium' is both enormous and inexplicable.

For that reason, I reckon Robertson is 'only' worth 30-40m.

McGuire is a solid defender but no better than Jim Holton, who cost Manchester United £80,000 when he was signed to shore up their defence in 1973. Allowing for inflation that would be just over £1 million today, an indication of how much more money circulates in the modern, globalised version of the game. If McGuire makes the difference to getting Manchester United into the Champions League then I suppose it will prove to be a good investment.

Tommy Docherty was adept at picking up players such as Holton, Coppell, Pearson and Gordon Hill from lower league clubs. . His masterstroke was to ask them, ‘What basic are you on son?’ The reply was usually in the order of £50 a week, to which Docherty boasted, ‘I’ll double it.’

Moyes was interested in him for £4million to replace ferdinand/vidic and he was laughed out the club.

The reason for the inflated prices for English players, is the home-grown quota. Premier League clubs can have a maximum of 17 non home-grown players in their 25 man squad. Home-grown is someone who was registered with English clubs for 3 years before the age of 21.

This means that the price of taking one team’s better home-grown players is higher, as they are harder to replace, without bringing in a more proven non home-grown player. That’s why we’re also seeing £20m for Oli McBurnie, another ridiculous fee. Look at Oxlade-Chamberlain and Drinkwater in recent years as well. Average players going for premium prices.

Due to the current lack of home-grown talent at top teams and lack of teams willing to play academy products in their first team, the teams that take a gamble on youth/unproven Englishmen are prospering, receiving large fees for home-grown talent.

The fact McGuire and Robertson both played for Hull City together is pretty funny given how bad Hull were defensively

They are both really good players and have come a long way since then of course

Mental money for what I can only describe as an English Gary Caldwell with a slightly larger head.

The wages are just ridiculous for these players. I believe he's on £190,000 a week, which works out at almost 10 million a year.

Vastly overpriced. Being English adds about 50% on to what it may have been.
