Match thread - QOS 1-1 Pars
Topic Originator: OzPar
Date:   Sat 10 Aug 14:27

Kinda weird seeing Fais warming up with the opposition at the moment. Josh Coley has dropped down to the bench, but the team looks quite attack-minded. Line-up as follows:-

1 Ryan Scully
2 Aaron Comrie
5 Euan Murray
6 Lee Ashcroft
4 Lewis Martin
21 Paul Paton (c)
11 Ryan Dow
8 Tom Beadling
12 Kyle Turner
15 Kevin Nisbet
10 Andy Ryan

Subs v QOS
20 Cammy Gill (GK)
16 Stuart Morrison
18 Paul Allan
22 Josh Coley
24 Josh Edwards
26 Matthew Todd
27 Lewis McCann

Why would that be? Inverness expected to challenge at the top losing to someone who we might be in contention with?

I would not expect too much this year. Too many people not being realistic.

We've had the most possession so far but Queens have managed to get shots on goal this half.

Faiss is up on his own, assisted by Mike Paton out to the left, but they've both been dispossessed often.

Looking forward to the second half.

We were quite comfortable in the first 25 minutes or so I'd say, and we really should have been further ahead but Ryan fluffed his lines when he put it wide when it looked easier to hit the target. There was nothing much in the game though, and chances were at a premium. In the latter 15 minutes or so Queens have got more and more of the ball and are trying to get the ball out to Murray on their left. They had a few half chances after that then in the last action before the break they hit the bar with a thumping header.

I like Turner but I think he's wasted on the left wing, he's limited defensively and has been caught out a few times. Dow is tracking back but Murray is starting to get the better of him as we failed to hold onto the ball and put their back line (who look iffy to say the least) under any pressure. Instead the ball is coming straight back at us. Good to be a goal ahead but this is not over by any stretch.

Heavy rain has made the playing conditions difficult, especially on the artificial surface. There's been an awful lot of head tennis involving the defenders and midfielders of both sides. Turner's goal was really well taken and we've had a couple of good chances that would have provided a helpful cushion, especially as QOS had their most dangerous spell just before the break when a shot went just over and a header hit the bar.

Overall, we are just about worth the lead, but I am sure we would all be a lot happier if we had taken those other chances. The game is not over yet and I would be surprised if we didn't get appearances from Coley and McCann before the day is out.

Just announced that the crowd is 1,562 with 361 visitors. Well done to those who made the journey in this grim weather.

COYP!

Very half empty. If you watched the game against Dundee at home, we'll be fine this season if we keep that standard up.

At the end of the day. it is a point gained away from home. Disappointing that we didn't hold out for a win, but the conditions rather than the tactics dictated much of this game. Not pretty, but not the end of the world either.

Should have been dead and buried by half time. Nisbet through on goal and Ryan scuffs wide from about 15 yards!

Didn't do anything second half except battle for a Paton punt!

Point away from home so not the end of the world but need to raise it still.

A point away is never a bad result. A bit worrying why we only seem to perform first half though. I very much doubt it is a fitness issue.

We have been ahead at HT in every game so far bar one.

I guess we will find out next week how we will respond to being behind at HT 🙀

Well we all know there will be ups and downs throughout the season with a young inexperienced squad and that showed today so nobody should be too upset ,
And Ryan got his chance today but didn't take it as far as i am concerned , a natural left pegger should have at the very worst hit then target when he got that opportunity ! And for Kevin Nesbit i was disappointed when he was one on one thought he would have scored but hey ho its the pars ,
I think we have to take the surface into consideration also as this played a major factor to us not playing our passing game , Just because AJ was there doesn't mean we have to play his way a hoof up the park to nobody
definitely not enough passing and movement off the ball today
you could see the goal for them was coming as we only played for 25 mins tops !
when the goal came it was down to a bit of bad luck on our part as they got the break of the ball from the challenge but on the other hand stay on your feet and its probably not a goal and the rest is history , I really thought Scully could have done better but I am maybe being a tad harsh , we didn't get beat but that is 2 games we should have collected maximum points from ( last week a couple of decisions helped Dundee) but today it was the lack of creativity and decision making from us that cost us , and on our bench there really is nobody there that can come on and be a game changer
not complaining though a draw is better than a defeat , Astro is not our scene !!

Some right raspers on this forum.
If we'd rightfully got the 3 points last week denied by a crap referee, 4 points from two games would be heralded as a great start.
I'll take a point away anytime at Dumfries personally.

What does it matter the date? League positions at the end of the season can be separated by 2-3 pts. Every game is important in the season.

a fishing trip would be bad enough for some of the posts but when they are actually serious, get a grip!

a point away from home on a dreadful surface with not one player getting pass marks, take it and run. Crawford says Murray walked back into the dressing room so hopefully hes alright and no lasting damage, referee should have just blown for full time once it was obvious how potentially serious it could have been.

its worrying that even given a goal or 2 of a headstart over the opposition we can only then hold on for a point.

We wont score first in every game.

Need to dip into the market maybe for a loan defender depending on Murray but also for another experienced head on the wing. We need something on the bench that can have an impact on the game and at the moment we nothing outside of the first 11 until thomson is back.

Just sitting here drenched in my own negativity!

My understanding is that after a clearout and net loss from last season we signed a lot of youth from lower divisions with the hope of developing them into a decent team over a few years.
A good first half v St Mirren and another v Dundee and suddenly we are stressing out because we drew against one of the title favourites and QoS away on a crap pitch.
Pre-season, how many of you thought we would win our cup group and get past these two games in the league unbeaten?

If this is a team we are hoping to develop we are starting from a better position than I thought.

I did think that McCann would have kept his place after his performance against Dundee. It is early in the season but I think the 2 Dundee teams will be at the top of the league especially Untd. as they have the strongest pool of players as for the rest nothing between them except possible Arbroath. I would settle for mid table as long as we keep entertaining with good football. Not particularly bothered about top league apart from more money coming into the club its probably more boring than our league.

Thought that was really poor today.
We started brightly but 1st half kinda petered out into a borefest, with the occasional good passage of play.
2nd half was just dross.

Got of to a great start. Game should have been dead and buried within 30 mins. Great chances for Ryan, Nisbet & a pinball passage of play in the opposition box when 3 shots came close.

Queens improved in the SH - Equaliser was coming & deserved, we hung on for a bit - thought we had conceded a pen but was judged offside.

A draw was a fair result.

Good - Started brightly & played well first 30 mins. Good goal well taken.

Bad - We dropped back to lumping the ball up the park
Turner & Dow - Far to quiet.
I would have had Coley & McCann on 10 minutes earlier.

Point away from home - Could do better.

C+

It looks like our home form is going to be better than it was last season.
We got a pont more than the last time we played Queens. Two points from two games is a sight better than one from our last eight league games in the run-in. And I think Astro is always going to be difficult for us. We're not consistent yet but might become moreso.

Things are looking C+, as someone said already. That's a decent pass mark. There seems to be greater potential than we had last season.

Not sure that saying things as they are makes everyone a doom merchant - are we only allowed constant praise? Performance today was very poor - lots of effort but very little quality - why was Martin not trying to get forward? And don’t blame the pitch - it seemed fine to me.
It was a good job Dobbie wasn’t playing - as it was they hit the woodwork twice and had a good shout for a penalty.

I thought the crowd gave great support to the team throughout though.

Think we were a tad fortunate to come away with a point today if I'm honest. Apart from the first 20 minutes or so we never had a spell of possession, the defence never really looked settled, the passing and pace from the first half v Dundee was gone, Ryan was pretty ineffectual (Nisbet wasn't much better but at least makes some good runs and puts himself about), Turner was pretty anonymous barring the goal and Beadling had a poor game. I guess we could look at that and say that it's good that we didn't play well and came away with a point from an away game but that was a lrefty turgid performance, up there (down there?) with some of the worst from last season and our lack of depth was exposed again as we didn't really have much to change things around. Certainly a downer after the optimism of last week's first half performance.

No idea how anyone can think that pitch is fine. It's a disgrace that they allow league matches on that surface. It's so slow that all the football was played in the air today.
Midfield missed out continually and very little created due to us not passing on the deck IMO.
Turner looked tired by half time and can't see what McCann did wrong to be omitted from starting 11.
However it's a point away from home.
Get the impression that teams are trying to be overly physical with us due to amount of youngsters we have but we're just going to have to deal with that as we progress.

There is an absolute killing to be made on us at the bookies this year, us to win the first half and get beat in the second

Murray was on his feet in the dressing-room after the game and SC didn't think he would need to go to hospital.

New team still gelling and not getting cuffed, picking up points. Never had a good record down there so relatively happy with a point.

I think not playing well and coming away with a point is key. QoS were putting in the tough tackles early on. The younger playerd coped with it well. The pitch looked hard so there were alot of high balls missing out the midfield. Getting a point by being forced to play a different style was a good result.

68guns highlights a valid point which became increasingly apparent yesterday.

QOS were overly physical against our young team..

The stats speak for themselves ie their 6 yellow cards to our none.

That is a worry too when we have a subs bench largely of youngsters.

Even with the imminent income from the Celtic windfall and Dundee Utd game,SC cannot go out and buy players. We appreciate that.

However, he really must get a couple of loan players and, hopefully, experienced ones at that.

QoS certainly were physical which was a surprise as AJ never had us playing that way. There was one particularly cynical professional foul by their No 6 on Dow when we were breaking quickly in the second half. I suspect their No 18 was subbed at half-time for his own protection having been booked in the first half. The wee No 7 had a nasty side to him too.

Just watched the full match on pars TV.
That was a good performance on the worst astro pitch I've seen, in horrible weather against some nasty challenges.

Apart from a 15 minute downpour in the first half the conditions yesterday were perfect.

Are we going to use the age and inexperience of our team as an excuse all season? Yesterday the average age of our starting 11 was 24.6 years. The average age of the Queen of the South starting 11 was 24.2. The average age of the Dundee starting 11 last Friday was 24.0. Our youngest starter yesterday was 21 years old.

I never mentioned age. Better performance than reading this thread suggests.

No but we should be prescient of the fact that we've practically rebuilt a team from scratch on a very tight budget and that performances, Edinburgh City aside, have been just fine.

I’m not going to start panicking this season. My reasonable expectations were for a comfortable mid table and maybe sneaking in the playoffs. That’s still the case. We deserved to beat Dundee last week and a draw at QOTS is no disgrace. We have a young team, many of them are still developing and some will be adjusting to making a step up.

Plenty reasons to be cheerful, I love the high energy, attacking football and high pressing we showed against Dundee. Nisbet looks like a proper striker. Coley, turner and Dow all look dangerous going forward. We are definitely going to be better to watch this year, even if we end up in a similar position. I’ll accept that because if these young guys develop they will be better next year, or maybe someone will pay silly money for one of them which would bankroll a title push next season.

Had my concerns about Crawford but I’m enjoying his brand of football.

Don't know why some people even bother. It's a brand new team, we've played some impressive football compared with last year but people expect us to be pumping everyone. As negative as I am, I'm more than willing to give this team a few months to gel and improve. I'd honestly take a fight to get into the playoffs this year

The thing for me is that we will only get better. The morale is good and you can clearly see the workrate and teamwork. QoS tried to knock us out of our stride because of the style of football we can play. That shows that it concerned them. It was a poor pitch. Our style suits us at EEP. All that considered it was a good result. We are taking small steps forward The best is yet to come.

"Don't know why some people even bother. It's a brand new team, we've played some impressive football compared with last year but people expect us to be pumping everyone."

1. Bother with what? People who weren't at the game want to know the opinion of those who were there - should they only focus on the positive aspects and ignore the rest?

2. Every other team in the league is also "a brand new team" - Queens had a player who literally joined then the day before in their starting line up. Being new to the team has no impact on the ability to control a ball, hit the target from 12 yards or defend your direct opponent.

3. We have played some nice football compared to last season but firstly, we also started last season playing good football (we won our BetFred Cup group and beat Dundee Utd at Tannadice remember) and secondly, the foot all on show yesterday was anything other than impressive. In fact some of it was like watching us last season, especially in the second half.

4. Literally nobody expects us to pump everyone, in fact the only time I've heard folk having such terms is when we've played East Kilbride and Albion Rovers. Most people I know thought we might lose last week and could possibly get all three yesterday but that it would be tight. Where is this nonsense coming from?

It's still very early days and some of the young lads will benefit from more sessions on the training field. Remember, Crawford, Shields and Dair were decent players, so you would hope that they can help them to get better?
A draw against Dundee at home and a draw at QOS, is not too bad.

Why not happy clap for a bit. We're back in there fighting and the players are giving it their all. Giving encouragement is always better that greetin' faced moaning. Find other outlets for venting our lifes grievances.

I think too that some of the players minds will be on the Celtic game. A big game for some of the young players, but good experience for them. Win or lose, things will be learned that can be carried into the league. Learning comes in many forms and one of those is learning from mistakes. They are developing as a team. Early days. They will improve. Every game will be tough. There is not much between any of the teams in the league. It will be about who takes their chances better in front of goal this season. We are scoring good goals with contributions from different players. If we can do that throughout the season we could surprise ourselves and make the playoffs.
