Lithuania. Skerla and the guy Danilevicius, I think he was only on trial at us, but went on to play in Serie A.

Did we not get him on loan from Arsenal?

I can’t remember his name but did we not also have a full back on loan from Arsenal who looked a much better player? Rings a bell that he was French but that might not be right.

Ahh yeah, he was on loan. My memory is terrible, only remember him playing once right enough.

Well done - knew someone would be fast.

David Grondin was indeed the left back from Arsenal. Rumour has it that Arsenal offered us a choice of reserve team left backs and we opted for Grondin over, erm...Ashley Cole. I think there may be some artistic license in that rumour.

We were offered Ashley Cole but turned him down as we thought we were well covered in that area, that was before we took Grondin on loan

The story I'd heard was that Cole's wages were already so large that we couldn't afford the insurance premium?

I liked Grondin. Quite a calm and cultured left-back. Seem to remember him scoring a nice goal against Rangers.

Yeah, I liked Grondin too - definitely a 'proper' footballer. Who did he compete with for the left back slot in that team (I don't recall him being a regular)? Lee Bullen?

It was the former chairman who told me the story one day in Legends so I’ve no reason to disbelieve it

Just remembered who we had at left back when we turned down Ashley Cole on loan

At the time had just been selected for the Scotland Under 21 squad. What a coincidence it was that the game was to be played at EEP, he never got on despite being on the bench (the cynics said he was only selected to boost the crowd)

Chris McGroarty, he went on to have a stellar career didn’t he?

he got a honker of a leg break that never recovered from. certainly lots of early promise and one of few players who could handle Momo Sylla when he was flying at st johnstone before moving to celtic.
