Match thread - Arbroath 1-0 Pars
Topic Originator: OzPar
Date:   Sat 31 Aug 13:05

Okay, I am literally sitting under a palm tree on a tropical island (Magnetic Island off the coast of Queensland, northern Australia) waiting for the Pars TV boys to get set up for the match this afternoon. It's quite late in the evening here in Oz, I am slightly pissed after a big dinner with sailing buddies. I have been up here yacht racing all week.

No ifs or buts, we really have to win this today. A bit early for the team sheets, but I am sure one of us will post the team as soon as it is announced.

I forecast 2-1 to the Pars.

COYP!

This will not be an easy game. The wind at the moment is 35 mph and this is one of the most exposed grounds in Scotland. It will be a battle against a big, physical team who are used to the ground. Not a day for silky football. We will need to dig in hard.

Gotta say that I would be happier if we maybe took McGill or Todd off and had Tom Lang on the subs bench. It would then look a bit more balanced.

We're playing with the wind I'd say. It is blustering around a bit but it's definitely in our favour.

We're playing absolutely honking, why we keep playing the ball long is anyone's guess, we've set the team up all wrong imo. I'm not sold on Paul Paton at all.

Danny Devine is having a Danny Devine day. By being Danny Devine he somehow manages to play ahead of plenty others, despite being Danny Devine. Danny Devine has Danny Devine’d himself a few times with some Danny Devine passing, Danny Devine decision making and a few Danny Devine clearances.

Danny Devine.

Btw the rest aren’t much better.

Don't see how Devine can be blamed tbf, that was all Scully, for a keeper who's apparently got "great shotstopping ability" he's honking at stopping shots.

Can't stress this enough, the way we've set the team up is all wrong. The fact we've not changed it beggers belief.

Scully surpassing himself from last week by actually diving over a shot that was along the ground. I can put up with poor distribution and not being the best with crosses but the last three goals we've conceded have been right at him. We've no clue how to deal with the wind and there are huge gaps all over the place. 30 minutes to save our season? Might not be an exaggeration sadly.

I don't know much about football. I just watch it as a fan.

But in conditions like that it seems to me that you need to run the ball out of defence on the ground (if you can).

Ashcroft did that once in the second half and so did Martin.

Devine punted in the air and/or into touch pretty much every time.

Didn't look like much of a game plan.

That made absolutely no sense, how we set the team up made absolutely no sense, the time taken to change it made absolutely no sense.

A performance so bad you'd have to go back to finishing 7th in League One to find a comparable one, absolutely horrendous.

I'd love to know what Paul Paton has. I'd love to know why we lined up with two upfront against Dundee United but one upfront against Arbroath, I'd love to know why against United we seemed insistent on playing the ball short from the back but we seemed intent on launching the ball long when the wind was blowing it everywhere.

That was an absolute disgrace from the management and the players.

If we lose next week Crawford must go. We were better under AJ.

Goes on about formations yet we haven’t stuck with 1 yet that’s worked for us. Constantly changing the forward players. 1 up top against teams we should be beating and 2 up against teams we should sit in.

Paton needs constant cover because he is not mobile, when he takes the ball in likes like he has cement on his feet. Devine is by far the worst centre half we have had in years makes Mvoto look good

I’m on a rant I know but god we are woeful

awful game, awful football from both teams, awful conditions, awful result from our point of view, some awful posts but not unexpected either.

one mistake was going to win it one way or the other, sadly it was at our end albeit starting deep in theirs.

I'm usually quite pissed off after a game when we lose, but I'm rarely angry. I was angry today towards the end of the game as that was absolutely not on. When you're a goal down with 10 minutes to go, it's not unreasonable to expect some urgency and drive but there was absolutely nothing - it was played like the first few minutes of most games with players who seemed resigned to it rather than making it happen for themselves. Even after a bad loss I can sometimes accept that they were just murder on the day but today I can't even do that. It was an absolute shitebag of a display, right through the team.

I agree - only player who looked like he was busting a gut to at least try and do something about it was Lewis Martin.

There was a strong wind, we should have been hitting shots in the first half at every opportunity. I can’t recall us having more than a couple.
Scully isn’t going to do, nowhere near good enough.

Just back, an awful performance. Crawfords tactics of one up front against a part time team...Beadling/Paton hopeless in the middle of the park; no pressing or urgency by the whole team. Arbroath keeper barely had to break sweat. Pathetic. Waste of money travelling up there today. How can that be the same team that held Celtic at Parkhead for over 90 minutes?

Folk can go on about one up front all day long, but even with the supposed extra man in there there were huge gaps in the middle. Beadling looked off the pace again, Paton is slower than I am, McCann isn't a wide player, Turner flits in and out of games and like Coley is too lightweight against streetwise defenders with a bit of strength. The whole performance was woeful. Cochrane added a wee spark and was at least trying to press but by then it was too late.

Distinctly worrying when you read Arbroath fans describing how poor we were and how little threat we posed.

I'm all for young hungry players getting a shot in team. They've been getting a chance and they're as gutless as any other player, young and old we've had. Enough is enough now surely.

Wind dictated that today was a physical battle. They looked to be stronger than us. All very well saying "keep the ball on the deck" like we're going to outplay anyone with one-two's and blistering pace - we don't have it and it just doesn't happen at our level. An awful game but Arbroath didn't play any better football than we did - they got one chance and took it. Not trying to defend the result but I'm not convinced there's a squad of players there who are significantly better than they showed today. We'll do well to avoid what we've seen Raith and Falkirk do recently and slip into league 1.

today was like watching an AJ team , absolutely not the right formation to play a part time team with nobody trying to get their foot on the ball and trying to play it on the ground, back to AJ days this week again a high ball up the park (and that rarely even happened it kept getting kicked out the park or given to the opposition , we get a break from the league next week so lets make some changes , IE: goalkeeper , Midfield and actually you can just about change everyone as i have not seen anyone the last 2 games shake a leg or burst a gut , to many people have went AWOL
most people bought into the idea of developing hungry young players but it shows we need some experienced players alongside them , (not Paton though my granny is more mobile than him ) and results like this will stop people attending
Your already running out of games and excuses Craw so start getting it right

A few main issues today. Why we're using Devine as the guy to 'create' from the back I'll have no idea... The spell when Cochrane came on we started playing good one twos and quickened the tempo we made inroads. For no apparent reason we then switched back to hoofing it in the sky. How did none of the players nor management realise this literally played into Arbroath's hands?! For me the problems start from the back, Morrison made a few mistakes against the best team in the league, I was willing to give devine a shot but after today he really is just woeful all round. The midfielders need to drop back, people need to make runs to create space for us to play in. We never earned the right to play football, there seemed to be a lack of pressing intensity, Cochrane at one point had to do the chasing himself and they made a mistake (it was the first time in the game someone did it!!!) Every tactical error we could've possibly made we did. We created absolutely nothing and we deserved nothing. Crawford for me needs to once again take a lot of the blame for his game plan. He got it right Vs Celtic, then inexplicably against United played right into their hands and today we've just tried to beat Arbroath at their own game. Coley can't play right winger and Nisbet was often left on his own with no support, and we're expecting him to hold up hoofballs in the sky and then turn and run at teams? Just a lot of things for Crawford and the team to consider. Paton as captain really exacerbated the issue, he should've been the one to calm us down and get us playing on the deck however this was not the case...

I was wondering 1. why Tom Lang didn't get a chance today, and 2. why does nearly every other team we play has bigger and stronger players than us. Number 2 is not just about our current team, but most of the teams played under past managers.

I thought even during the warm-up a lot of the players looked as if they would rather be somewhere else today. In conditions like that it was always going to be a physical battle today and from our midfield players and forwards they were just not strong enough. Don't know why we played with one striker unless we were playing for a draw and besides nothing stuck with him and not good enough to play that role, needs rested next week along with Scully. Teams will now know we can be overpowered physically ie. Dundee Untd. and today Arbroath and especially with the heavier pitches coming up it will no be so easy to play our passing game then, so deff. Need some muscle/experience in the middle of park before it's to late.

Wasn't there today but you are usually always very objective and fair with your views on games so that is saying something for you to feel like that it must have been bad.
