Match thread - Pars 1-2 Alloa Athletic
Topic Originator: OzPar
Date:   Sat 7 Sep 14:15

After the disappointment of last week's performance in Arbroath, this is a game that in all likelihood will be played in front of a paltry crowd spread around the main stand. Pars fans will be expecting far more effort in this game which could hardly contrast more with our last cup outing at Parkhead.

A different look to the team this week...

Dunfermline v Alloa Athletic
20 Cammy Gill
2 Aaron Comrie
3 Tom Lang
6 Lee Ashcroft
4 Lewis Martin
12 Kyle Turner
21 Paul Paton (c)
8 Tom Beadling
26 Matthew Todd
9 Gabby McGill
38 Greg Kiltie

Subs v Alloa Athletic
10 Andy Ryan
14 Danny Devine
15 Kevin Nisbet
16 Stuart Morrison
22 Josh Coley
1 Ryan Scully (GK)

We've got no width today and with our full backs not very attack minded, I don't think we've got in their box yet.

It's a 4321 we've lined up with.
Back four is as you'd expect, Beadling on the right, Paton in the middle who is dropping deep between the centre backs to receive the ball, Todd in the left.

Kiltie as left attacking mid with Turner as the right attacking mid.

For the news guys, Lang has started well, Gill hasn't done much albeit he misplaced a pass that could have been punished but thankfully Trouten ****** it, Todd has had a few poor touches and passes which is unlike him, Kiltie you can already tell is a player.

Kiltie scores!
From an Alloa corner we break up the park absolutely rapid, Turner with the assist but the pass procedding that McGill was vital, meant Turner could take the ball in his stride.

The perfect counter attack really.

A lovely well-worked goal by Kiltie. We broke out of a defensive position with some splendid speedy passing play. Good stuff from the Pars.

1-1 a driven cross/shot and Gill has had an absolute howler, sort of palms it into the ground, Tam Lang tries to recover the situation but couldn't get enough to divert it away from Thompson, wouldn't fault Lang in the slightest though, that was dreadful from Gill.

Honestly, it really has become brutal watching the Pars these days.

A nice goal from a breakaway corner but other than that, been a really guff game of football for us.

Says it all when Lang I think has been our best performer. Kiltie in 45 mins showing some good signs.

Agree with Grant, Gill looks shaky, Beadling just doesn’t look arsed and Todd just canny tell what is the football or his feet man.

This is pretty poor. Very much like Scotland last night, the passing is poor and there is no speed of thought. We have looked like we're going to get away on the break now and again but the move had fizzled out in all but one - and we scored that time. Their goal was a comedy of errors, with Gill not covering himself in glory and Lang presumably not knowing Thomson was behind him.

The most baffling thing though is the formation we are trying to play. There's no width again despite Kiltie being signed to provide this, and while Comrie and Martin try to get forward the two centre halves don't give the confidence for them to do so with any purpose. Turner is just kind of floating about and swapping constantly with Kiltie and it just isn't working for either although Kiltie is probably the best player out there. Paton is dropping really deep again and so there's a huge 20-30 yard gap in the centre of the park where Beadling is struggling to get around and do much of anything and Todd seems to have been told to stay on the left side for some reason. It's all a bit of a guddle and there is no sense of a plan or anything yet again. We might yet win this game but it's hardly increasing my confidence levels.

This is looking suspiciously like last season.

Good league cup performances to get us excited and then utterly dire with a relegation scrap coming up.

If we lose to Arbroath and Alloa in successive weeks then Crawford's jacket will be on a shoogly peg.

No point, the board have persued the 'youth route' as a cost cutting exercise. It doesn't work, never has. Doesn't matter who the coach is, we are going down. Crawford was off his nut accepting this job with those conditions.

Board have made awful decisions lately.

Bringing in Crawford, bringing in Jackie McNamara, handing out 2 year contracts to a load of youngsters.

All well and good watching our finances but the way we’re playing today League One is above our level of standard.

Let’s start by getting this dross with Paton coming deep leaving the middle of the park totally exposed.

In fact let’s drop Paton and try some legs in the middle of the park, I know I’m old fashioned but you never know, it might work.

The board seem unable to get any footballing decision right. Crawford is a terrible appointment. The team is in free fall to Div one. It will be left to the fans to let the board know what we think in the coming matches.

I remember watching St.Mirren languishing at the bottom of The Championship during season 2016-17; they beat TNS, who’d played in the Champions League and also seen a couple of games on BBC Alba. They were playing pretty decent football, but couldn’t get results in the league.

So, they did avoid relegation and actually ended up only 9 points behind us. The following season they won the league.

Things looked pretty dire and although their overall quality and type of play deserved better; you wouldn’t have believed that they’d end up in The Premiership - and staying there.

During that period we were beating St.Mirren home and away and usually scoring 3 or 4 goals.

Today, I think we might be in a similar situation; we do have quality and for some spells we’re actually playing ‘not bad football’. I think there was a casualness about the way we started against Dundee United, and since the Celtic game I feel the effort and energy we displayed then had been missing. Dundee Utd did not underestimate us and worked their butts off. We need to take the same approach and mentality as them to every one of our games, bar none. It might not deliver results every time nor even straight away - but I believe if the guys can get the attitude right, the results will come.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think we should ever play with any formation that has a ‘1’ in it :)

“Football is a beautiful game,
It should be played beautifully.”
Brian Clough.

Of course not. The results so far haven't been great but I'm prepared to give this squad more than a months worth of league games to try and gel

Would agree with that. Re assess after the first round of games.

Don’t care if it’s the Challenge Cup, this is still a scope of how we are going to be in the league as we were up against a fellow Championship side. 2 part time teams in the league and if we finish bottom two, that will be an absolute embarrassment.

Not enough intensity from start to finish.

Basic passes going astray all over the place. Ashcroft especially guilty, but by no means the only offender.

Nisbet looked good in parts when he came on, but overall the team were way too passive.

I get the logic of bringing in young, hungry players, but they have to play like they're hungry (and also like they train together from day to day).

I think that it is a poor result whatever way you look at it. At the end of the day if you are a professional you go out every day to do the best you can in whatever it is you do. Agreed the league is more important but this result is a bit concerning. My view was always a mid table finish this year. Its still far to early to be panicking there is a long way to go. Hopefully we can start to get some wins under the belt and improve as the season progresses.

Thinking aloud here but does anyone know where our next win is going to come from?

Who are we good enough to beat in this league?

People saying "it's only the Challenge Cup" seem to be missing a fee points, namely that we were at home and needing a win and a performance to make up for last week, that we had a fairly strong team out including our latest recruit who many people were delighted we signed, that we were definitely trying to win and get back into the game but had no idea how to do so and that the team who beat us will now come with the exact same game plan when we play them in the league. The idea that this loss somehow doesn't matter or isn't symptomatic of bigger issues is proper head in the sand stuff.

We been experience to guide the inexperience imo.
Crawford's arrival under AJ changed nithing, his tenure since has changed nothing but the names on the shirt, sure there are no doubt players in there, unfortunately it doesn't look like there is the nous to get the best of them.
Dire record.

Garbage........

Well played Alloa unfortunately they didn't need to play all that well to beat us.

Far to slow moving forward, very little creativity from midfield, looked shaky at the back, they had a sub goally on that we hardly troubled. Same as last week - very little urgency shown. (route 1 football sometimes pays off - try it some time).

... I could go on but what's the point.

After that Crawford needs to earn his corn.

He needs to go through them like a ton of bricks, and if he doesn't he will be gone by Xmas along with our Championship status.

It's nowhere near good enough.

It's a nothing game. Tunnocks Tea Cake nonsense Cup. Nothing worth wetting yer knickers over. Kinda glad we are out, it's for the wee teams to get excited about. One thing that does strike me though is how our team could be improved by getting the likes of Alan Trouten and Bobby Linn in to supplement the youngsters

We are outplayed and out muscled by teams who on paper who are supposed to be inferior anyone who attends can obviously see this , except perhaps the coaching staff who seem unable to grasp the situation , appointing Crawford and sanctioning him bringing in his mate from the mighty Dundonald Bluebell is beginning to look like a bit of a joke now but it could have serious consequences come the end of the season

Dreadful performance. Hard to believe this is basically the same side that looked so good demolishing admittedly lower-league clubs in the league cup. We sorely missed Dow on the right-hand side, but it's alarming to see how much the likes of Turner, Beadling and Comrie have regressed in the last month.

Kiltie looked a good player, but was completely isolated a lot of the time in the first half. No idea what to make of McGill based on that. Ashcroft was Ashcroft, Lang might be a player but is now injured and will probably not be seen again before Christmas.

Gill ? Great save, awful distribution (worse than Scully !!!) and looked to be one of a few who could have done better at the first goal.

As somebody else posted, we've lost to Arbroath and Alloa on successive Saturdays. So much for them saving us from relegation ...

Paton playing just in front of (or sometimes in place of) the central defence ? Never in a million years.

Caley Thistle up next. I remember them destroying us early on last season, and expect the same next week.

Very little to be positive about just now.

very disappointed today again !!
no tactics whatsoever from SC
the team looked disjointed and looked as though they didn't know what position they were playing at times , no commitment or burst a gut effort at all
Alloa on the other hand were in our faces and pressing us back in fact they looked fitter than us also and you can see they wanted to win (not like us)
last 2 games were part time teams and they have beaten us already
and i do not care if it was a game played for a tea cup you have to go out there and do you best !
I did not see anyone of note doing that today

The pressure on SC will surely increase every week we go without a victory, on today’s display, it will mount quickly

I watched an inept Scotland play without confidence last night and struggle to see where we are any better given the parallels of levels

Can Crawford pull us through? Starting to look like it’s a no but I am prepared to give him another three games, after those three games if we don’t win then the BOD will need to spend the cash at hand from the Celtic game to cut the losses and bring in an experienced man

I also think that (having seen both) the player we sent back to Burnley is a better player than we brought in from Kilmarnock on loan, again I hope to be proved wrong

Perhaps it will all click in and we can go on a decent run, hope springs eternal!

they are different types of player but there is no comparison between playing against Alloa and East Fife's reserves.

back to a couple of points, on Kiltie saying he was brought in to give width, that's not what Crawford said during the week.
the first goal if that's Scully and Devine making the mistakes...the reaction would be a hell of a lot worse that's for sure.

line up was strange at best, tactics didn't work in any way, changes were far too late, zero plus points from the game basically...…..and even then they should still have had a penalty in injury time for hand ball which might have got us to penalties.

I think if we continue to play the way we did in the last 2 games then I think we can look out our buckets and spades and beach balls cos we will be heading for the seaside league once more. What happened to us pressing teams from the start of games and trying to keep it going. Arbroath and Alloa had acres of space and time on the ball apart from the odd occasion we made a tackle. Exactly the same as last week, too many players not prepared to compete and win there individual battles and too slow in their build up play and brushed of the ball to easily. I do not know if the change of tactics has come from the manager but it is not working and I am afraid it is getting a bit like last season now. So depressing after the way we started.

Sorry but he was a better more direct player who could get behind the last defender and deliver a ball into our forwards, correct me if I’m wrong but maybe that’s what a winger should be able to do?

Not miscrying Kiltie, but I think it’s a bit of straw clutching saying we should not go for Steele as opposed to Kiltie due to the latter having more experience

Perhaps that shows a bit of an admission that we are desperately short of experienced players due to the signing policy

Steels has just turned 18 and only ever played 6 games, some of those as a sub in the National League North. He was injured all last year and I'm not sure if he has played for Burnley U23s much if at all.Kiltie scored 6 in 14 games in this division last season for Morton so on paper he is the safer bet although I didn't see Steels play-were we looking at him with a view to a permanent transfer?

U23s is down there seems to be a few players that might make it, supplemented by some guys to make up the numbers. If they are still playing there when they are just shy of 23, they probably aren't up to much

Vinnie has played for under 23 and in fact playing for them tomorrow against charlton .

He was wanting to sign but maybe an agreement with both clubs could not be agreed.

I dont think he is same type of player as Kiltie as Kenny said he is a more traditional left winger taking on his man and delivering good service to the front men .

Idont see anyone we have that can play left wing in that manner and left wingers are hard to find .

I think we should have taken a chance with him

Was really enthused by that first half against Dundee but ever since it's been absolute toilet bar the Celtic game. I'm all for the approach we have taking with the young guys but they look out their depth from what I've seen so far. I hope I am wrong but I think we are in for a very long season.

It's the attitude of some fans that is the issue.

If we are "as well out of it" - why enter in the first place ?
