I know not every Pars fan is into the CL but I find it a welcome distraction when the Pars aren't doing too well.

I think Napoli - Liverpool could be a good watch tonight. I can see the Italians ending the Reds long unbeaten run.

No goals at half time in the San Paolo but a very intriguing game with both teams looking very fast and dangerous on the counter attack.

Liverpool unlucky to lose the game, as was Robertson to concede the penalty. I think Callejon played for it. The VAR should have overturned the ref's decision.

I beginning to wonder what the point of having a VAR is.

Looks like we are back to normal service as far as refereeing decisions go. Every ref. does what seems best for himself and usually for the home team. Milner's booking was farcical, it wasn't even a foul. But sadly Liverpool didn't help themselves, their front 3 had little penetration.

feel sorry for Robertson, he kicked the ball off the toes Callejon which was great defending, only for him to to go over the body and trailing leg of Robertson.

Koulibaly gave a great display of defending for Napoli last night.

I am always hearing pundits saying that defenders should stay on their feet, but Koulibaly spent half the game on his backside making well-timed interceptions and blocks.
Despite all the rule changes over the years, Italian football still throws up players like Cannavaro, Chiellini and Koulibaly who can defend aggressively due to their great judgment.

Never in a million years a penalty. Liverpool only have themselves to blame for that loss though. On another note, how good would a defence with Koulibaly and Van Dijk be? I can’t believe Koulibaly hasn’t moved to a massive club yet. He’s got to be one of the best in the world at the moment.

Can't disagree with the two posts immediately above. Koulibaly is a phenomenal defender - he and Manolas are a great partnership. Perhaps their distribution could be better but defensively, they're immense.

Wasn't Koulibaly a Man U target this summer? What happened there? I think they could have got him for less than Pogba.

probably for another thread but on VAR/Referee in 3 points.

1. wont overturn referees "opinion" based decisions
2. Dont "hate" on a referee/VAR for incorrect outcome when the initial issue is the player is embelleshing things (last night player going down before contact made) blame the player for being a con rather than the ref for being conned/"useless"
3. VAR has "improved" decision making by 2% in the EPL. Well worth the millions of investment the talking points and the large amount of joy that has been removed of whether you celebrate a goal or not or wait until a computer says you can.

Me too, Kelty. I reckon there'll be a bit of needle, carried over from last season's knockout phase in which Juve overturned a 2-0 defeat in Madrid, thanks to a hat trick from CR7.

I can't see past a draw tonight. 1-1.

Did anyone catch the gesture made by Cristiano Ronaldo after he'd shaved the outside of the far post with a low, hard shot in stoppage time? It involved putting all the fingers of one hand together, pointing upwards, then opening and closing them several times.

He was asked to explain what it meant after the game. He made something up. It's an Italian gesture which he's picked up. Any of you know what it means?

Maybe Raymie or Kelty Par can take a guess?

Spot on, Raymie. The gesture mimics a chicken's anus, which twitches continually, allegedly, thus implying that the Atletico fans had been crapping themselves just beforehand.

I think the pick of tonight's games has to be Spurs v Bayern. It'll be good to see how the greatest (English) striker in the world plays tonight, although I think his partner, Son, is better.

I agree, Son for me is completely underrated. I remember watching him for Leverkusen years back and being totally gobsmacked no one went for him until spurs did. Bayern are in a period of transition without Robben/Ribery and now moving to Gnabry/Coman. They've also brought in Pavard/Hernandez as new fullbacks, I'll be interested to see how Coutinho fits into their system. I suspect Bayern may sneak a 2-1 victory...

Son is excellent and undoubtedly under rated but at the age of 26 Kane is already the 13th all time leading scorer in the EPL and if he stays injury free he should do some serious damage to that table.

In his last five seasons he's scored: 24 in 40, 41 in 48, 35 in 38, 28 in 50 and 31 in 50.

That's top level striking.

When you look at it in terms of goals per minute in the EPL then only Aguero is better than him.

https://www.sportbible.com/football/news-stats-aguero-is-the-premier-leagues-best-striker-for-minutes-per-goal-ratio-20190914

Son is excellent but Kane is in the elite/world class level.

Son won their player of the year last season.I don't think his value was fully appreciated by Spurs before then.

If you look at last season Kane scored 24 in 37 starts in all competitions compared to Son's 20 in 39. If you consider Son mostly plays as a second striker and 5 of Kane's were penalties that measures up pretty well.In the league Kane had 50 shots to Son's 29.Son also provided double the amount of assists than Kane.Son is certainly the more versatile of the two but it's difficult to compare them as they are different types of player.Kane hasn't looked as sharp this season imo-off at the end of the season?

Steady on londonparsfan, we have the Scottish outlook on these matters and as such, no matter how many goals the big dreep has scored, he's the living epitome of Englishness and the establishment talisman. We can never see him as a great player because as an Englishman, he lacks the Gaelic or continental swagger. He is big and cumbersome, not even as mobile as Ibrahimovic. In short he's pretty boring but in the eyes of the fulminating, rose coloured English pundits he can do no wrong. No, we can never accept that he has any real greatness and that was exemplified in the world cup semifinal and the Champions league final. I will never forgive him for scoring two at Hampden and that goal he scored last week when he scooped it over the goalkeeper from a prone position was a complete fluke.

No eastendboy, I'm Scottish and have a very big chip on my shoulder. And I find writing like that can, for me, at least be soporiphic and even therapeutic. I suppose I'm a bit of a saddo and chuckle to myself as I write. It helps to ease the pressures of life and sooth the aches and pains of middle/ old age. I find I am mildly entertained by the exercise and while no one else is forced to read it hope that they may be too.

I think my tongue-in-cheek post this morning has caused a bit of consternation in the ranks, so I'll clarify.

Kane is undoubtedly a serial goalscorer and therefore, judged on that alone, is a better striker, whereas Son is a better all round footballer, in my humble one. He has great awareness, links up play and brings others into the game in a way that not many other EPL players can match.

Yes GG, I would have to admit a begrudged admiration for both players and like the way Son plays with a big smile on his face. To be honest, I support all British teams in Europe and because I was in Rhodes the week before last, with little entertainment in the evening, I took in most of the Champions league games and Euefa games. Please forgive me but I became a Rangers supporter for the evening, while sitting next to two very partizan ladies from Rotterdam and also caught part of the earlier Celtic game that evening when I also hoped for a Celtic victory.

Zidane has obviously never heard the golden rule of football - "Never go back."

Real's directors - especially their President - are not well known for their patience, so Zizou's jacket will be on a very shoogly peg tonight.

Eta. I see it finished 2-2, with Casemiro sparing Madrid' s blushes with an 85th min equaliser. Still not a result the Real faithful will be happy with.

Well, I doubt I'll see as dramatic a game as last night's Spurs nightmare v Bayern.

The most intriguing tie looks to be Barca v Inter. The Milanese club have made a perfect start under Antonio Conte with maximum points from their first six matches.

Valencia v Ajax looks good too, though the Dutch lost some of their best players over the summer.

Gnabry was immense as was Coman but questions have to be asked about Serge Aurier who was woeful. Once Pochettino put on about 6 attackers the game was gone. Bayern certainly put down a marker to other teams, they've added some good quality and Kimmich being able to play both CM and RB naturally is a very good added bonus.

Is that a true story Berkey never heard of it before but that would explain quite a lot. Being a simple country lad I presume it does not mean he sang a talking song to her.

I had also heard that rumour. Vertongen going full John Terry, big dressing room bust up and Kane gave the dirty dog a black eye allegedly.

Gnabry and Lewandowski were both brilliant but the rest of their team mates were no slouches, either. I agree about Aurier - he was by far the weakest link and there's a question mark over his temperament, too. It was a strange game in that there was no hint of the second half deluge to come before the interval. Spurs were worth their lead and had Son been more clinical early on, the game might have taken a completely different turn. It was a freak result, reminiscent of Brazil's collapse v Germany in the 2014 WC, in that it's very unlikely Bayern can repeat it next time they meet, even with home advantage.

Good to see Glen Hoddle looking so well after his heart attack. What a footballer he was. An absolute baller. I honestly couldn’t think of any modern day comparisons. I suppose that type of player has been phased out .

A shame Berkey's post has been deleted so now I have to guess what he said!

Last night was interesting and led to a lot of questions. On the penalties, I can see why Spurs got one although I don't think they should be - I'm not sure what the defender is meant to do and how it impacts on the player who then tumbles theatrically. Then the one at the other end looked like the VAR would give it even though Coman made the most of it. The City one was the same - looked to be a corner in real time but when the replay was shown I thought the VAR would give it. The biggest question though is who at Spurs thought it would be a good idea to sell Trippier without getting a replacement in. Aurier and Walker-Peters aren't good enough at their level. Big problems at Tottenham. I don't think City looked too clever either from what I saw. They really do rely on KDB and Sterling a helluva lot.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN has blasted the “bulls***” rumours team-mate Jan Vertonghen slept with his girlfriend and sparked a massive dressing-room bust-up with Harry Kane.

The Tottenham playmaker, 27, and girlfriend Sabrina Kvist have been together since 2012 – but rumours recently claimed she had been unfaithful with Vertonghen.

But both Eriksen and married Spurs pal Vertonghen, 32, have taken to Twitter to slam the vile, untrue gossip.

The Danish star, quote-tweeting one of the fake reports, simply wrote the word, “bulls***”, complete with a sleeping emoji.

And no sooner had he posted that, Vertonghen quote tweeted that with a series of emojis, including a heart next to Eriksen's Twitter handle.

The original tweet spreading the fake news read: “Christian Eriksen's wife has reportedly been caught having an affair with his team-mate Jan Vertonghen.”

Can't believe the apathy that watching the best of club football generates here

Real v Bruges
Spurs v Bayern
Liverpool v Salzburg

All were great games. The Batern goals were superbly taken and some great goals again tonight, especially Suarez's double.

Aye, it's a mystery, Raymie. Worth starting a thread to try and get some answers. 🙂

I watched Barca v Inter, a quite compelling game with two outstanding goals by Suarez, but going by the highlights, Liverpool v Salzburg might have been a more entertaining watch.

Partly it's because it's on BT - Their viewing figures aren't great despite the money they've spent on it and the interest levels on Twitter, podcasts etc. Partly it's because it's so far removed from what we see on a weekly basis and the transfer fees and wages (which have always been pretty ridiculous) are now so crazy that they are beyond comprehension. And I think it's partly that in an sense these games don't have any real jeopardy - Spurs lost their first two games last season and still made the final - and so despite the results everyone still expects the usual suspects to qualify for the knock out stage.
