Best Pars Goal You've Ever Seen
Topic Originator: GG Riva

Lee "Zidane's" volley v Ayr got me thinking about some of the great goals I've seen the Pars scoring, down the years.

That strike would be in my top 5, but it's not my number 1. I'd like to hear your nominations before I reveal my choice. I'm curious to see if anybody else comes up with it.

Over to you......

Eta. I go back quite a few years so many of you youngsters won't have seen my favourite. :-(

Was John Clark's goal not just a thunderous free kick? How would that beat Barry Nicks, "Archie Gemmill" goal?

Sandy McNaughton vs Clydebank at New Kilbowie 1980.
Astonishing 30 yard strike that nearly took the net off and sent our small band of away fans into bedlam.

If you only turn up to moan then do it elsewhere

I've seen a few belters over the years. . .but the stand out one for me was Ross Jack's against Hibs at Easter Road in the League Cup (cannae remember the year, 1988/89 ?). Andy Goram never smelt it.

Mike Leonard scored a cracker against Buckie Thistle in the Scottish Cup at East End (1979/80?). Think the Saturday fixture was postponed due to frost and the goal was scored in the rearranged midweek fixture.

They're all brilliant, however Lee Bullen volley vs Hearts, I think, sticks in the mind, cross field ball from Crawford(?) and absolutely beasted into the net. Also remember Simon Donnelly scoring with a rebound off his &rse vs Hibs, it takes rare skill to do that!

16th March 1985.
1-1 Draw at Hampden with Queens Park.
Bobby Forrest ran into a clearance from Queens Park on the halfway line.
He blootered it first time and the ball sped through the air like a bullet.
It hit the underside of the bar as it crossed the line.
I'm not sure if it was even meant as a shot or if he was just getting rid of it as he was being closed down but best I've seen by a mile.

Would have to agree with Robertson's goal v Clydebank. Not only was it a great goal but the emotion behind it puts it top imo.

Barry Nic's v ICT is a worthy 2nd.

One that's maybe not the 'best' but one of my favourites was Watson's v Meadowbank in 89 which won us the league.

I always end up equating the best goal with the best feeling I had (probably not the gist of the thread but I cant help it) so mine are:

Robbo
Barry Nic
Petrie at Tannadice
Skerla at Hampden
Hardy v Rovers

For technique/ability ahead of the importance or significance of the goal at the time.....

David Graham scored an absolute peach at Pittodrie many moons ago.

It was a short throw in down the touchline - same side as the TV cameras were - about 25-30 yards up from the goal line and he either let it roll over his shoulder or chested it for his first touch and then spun round and hit it full on the volley into the opposite top corner.

I'm pretty sure it was on Scotsport the next day, albeit briefly, but i've never seen it again since. The distance and quality might be slightly embellished over time with my memory but that is how i remembered it :-)

Robbie Winters then went into beast mode and tore us a new one and we lost 3-1 !

Not a Pars goal but the brewster strike in the 2-2 draw, 1996 at east end vs United was a cracking strike.

Gary Dempsey scored a flying volley at Tannadice, both feet in the air from edge of the box. Superb technique.

As soon as I saw the heading of the thread my first thought was John Clark - lots of other shouts though have ignited great memories - can’t argue with Hardie Nicholson or Kozma.

For sheer elation what about big Davie Young’s 2 headers in the 3-3 draw with Hibs in our first game in the Premier League.

1. Pat Gardner
2. Barry Nicholson
3. Martin Hardie

Each one of these was hugely significant for our club at the time.

As for the best goal ever scored at EEP, I would probably give that prize to the Russian winger for Rangers (was it Kanchelskis?) who scored a world-class screamer against us.

It would be John Clark for me too I reckon-midweek game with no cameras there IIRC. Of all people I also remember Ray Sharp scoring a beauty at East End in the Paton era when we were scoring for fun-may have been the season when we were top scorers in Europe but missed out on promotion.

Norrie's goal at Dens in the 4-4 game brought back some good memories. Quite a few of the goals mentioned above are in these compilations-worth a watch

Stevie Crawford scored a screamer in a win at the old Love Street, the season we challenged them for the title and went up as runners up - 99/00 I think?

Must've been about 40 yards, held off some challenges and smashed it into the roof of the net.

Bullys for me as well. Was right behind it in the NW, as soon as he hit it, we knew it was in. Absolute screamer. Oh and it was Scott Wilson with the cross field pass. Equally as impressive.

The "problem" when asking about best goals seen is that fans automatically focus on spectacular belters from 25/30 yards.

Maybe the question should be most memorable goals ?

One that stands out in my memory is number three in this 3-0 win over Dundee United from 1995 - from 1:36 - classic quick break from defence to score

Anyone remember an absolute screamer by Mike Leonard at Meadowbank. It was a Friday night game for some reason, and maybe his debut game. He scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win and the final goal was a full volley as a long punt up the park came to him over his shoulder. Real Roy of the Rovers stuff and about my only decent memory of watching the Pars at that soul-less dump of a ground.

Bert Paton has two candidates as Pars' greatest ever goal. His 35 yard swinging shot which hit the top corner at Ibrox in December 1965 in a 3-2 victory was not televised and only a handful of Pars fans are still around who witnessed it. Those who do often say it was the best shot they ever saw.

Bert’s solo effort against Raith Rovers on New Year’s Day 1968 was the last goal in a 6-0 victory so he could afford to be indulgent: he dribbled past three defenders, rounded the goalkeeper, slipped back inside the keeper a second time, stopped to let a defender slide in front of him, then walked the ball over the goal line. I saw George Best score a goal a bit like that on TV once, but Bertie’s was actually better. EEP was sheer bedlam for we were all screaming at him to shoot, but he just ignored us as he went about his business in that trademark unhurried style.

Wee Joe Cardle v Hearts in the league cup a couple of seasons ago, surprised its not been mentioned

Fantastic technique and a superb finish

Love all of the others too, John Clark’s was the best strike of a ball I have ever seen, it was like an excocet missile and was still gathering pace as it hit the net, not from a dead ball as suggested above

Barry Nics, Archie tribute, goal at Pittodrie is special as was Robbos goal in “that game” after Norrie’s death

Faulconbridge v Celtic, looping header had Gould flapping, stopped them winning the league.

Barry nic at pittodrie in the semi final

Adam hammil at Celtic Park, stepped in from the touch line about 25 yards out and hit a screamer that boruc was not expecting

Harry Curran scored a Beauty at East in in a live TV game, I think we may have been up 2-0 at half time as a result. Before Simon donnelly destroyed us second half. I think. Iran May have scored a similar goal v rangers also

Phil McGuire header that put us up 3-0 v rangers at east end, finished 3-2. But there was some power In That header

And can’t forget jason dair at ibrox, to go 1-0 up Before we “laid down” to hand rangers the 6 goals to win the league.

Yes indeed, a 2-2 draw, 1972 or thereabouts methinks ?

AK hit the ball on the full volley from an outwinging corner taken at the North West side - Peter McCloy never saw it - BBC showed it over and over again.

I was going to suggest that very goal ReturningParsFan.

It was a Friday night in March 1978. I think Meadowbank were experimenting with Friday night kick-offs to attract people who would otherwise have gone to Tynecastle or Easter Road on a Saturday.

The Pars had beaten Brechin 6-1 on the Wednesday, so I was optimistic of a result as Meadowbank were a poor side at the time. As a long-distance Pars fan, I think it my only have been my fourth game.

I think we'd signed Leonard early in the new year in our latest attempt to find a 20 goal a season striker to get us out of the bottom division. Mackie and Shaw had long gone, the converted defender Evans was away too, and we were relying on Bobby Morrison, Jim Mullin and a third player (who may be the subject of a quiz question) to get the goals.

Leonard had broken his duck with a brace on the Wednesday and followed it up as described.

The final score was 4-2, so what might have been a comfortable victory was a little bit nerve-wracking until Mick's wonder strike.

I note that the Pars Database has Ziggy Bowie scoring the other goal - my recollection is that it was scored by another player, who was allegedly born in Egypt.

My questions are therefore:

When did the Pars last score 10 goals in just over 48 hours?

Who was our "flamboyant" Eqyptian (born) striker?

What ever happened to Andy Dickson, who played for the Pars roundabout that time?

From more recent times,

For style, I liked Josh's strike at Central Park at the end of 4-0 win at the beginning I think of the season we went into admin.

For substance, I liked Hoppy's goal at Somerset to win 2-1 in a top of the table shootout when the Pars were down to 10 men -- might have been the same season.

Hardie v The Wee Team (free kick)
Hardie v ICT (free kick)
McIntyre v hibs (his penalty dink Up the middle)
John Clarke, that astonishing free kick (can’t remember the opposition)

All the above were from set pieces & all were important goals at the time, but only one I would mention from open play & for a very very special reason was...............

Craig Robertson’s goal v Clydebank to Win the game 4-3 just after Norrie sadly passed is the only goal that is indelibly inscribed in my memory 23 years hence.
The sadness the team, fans & town were feeling at Norrie’s death.
The fact we had been 3 nil up & cruising when the enormity of the event simply came home to rest all at once on the collective shoulders of our team.
The importance of this being the first came after Norrie passed away.
& of course a special mention goes to Norrie for his recognised assist in the goal

I still go back & visit this goal on YouTube a couple of times a year to marvel at it for all that it meant to so many both then & ever since

Other memorable goals in my early times as a Pars fan:

"The "problem" when asking about best goals seen is that fans automatically focus on spectacular belters from 25/30 yards.

Maybe the question should be most memorable goals ?

One that stands out in my memory is number three in this 3-0 win over Dundee United from 1995 - from 1:36 - classic quick break from defence to score."

Yes, I'll take that one on the chin, Mr VEE. I must give more thought to how I couch any new thread I start in future.... :-(

I don't know how often the goal of the season is a ''belter'', as opposed to a great move involving a number of players, or a brilliant individual goal, but I'd imagine that these will tend to shade it when fans are voting rather than ex players turned pundits.

I'm not revealing my choice just yet, but it has been mentioned by a couple of elder Dotnet statesmen......... ;-)

Alex "the playmaker" Burke at dens. Unleashed a beast that gets further from the goal everytime I tell the story that left Rab Douglas wishing he was still a builder.

Thats the one that popped into my head. I was lucky enough to see it live! Some strike. It's on Pars TV somewhere...

...ken?

5-1 win against Ayr in 2013. Alex Whittle scored an absolute peach into the top corner.

Josh Falkingham also scored a belter in the same game. I'm sure there were maybe 20+ passes in the build up and he fired into the top corner with the outside of the boot.

Here's to the first of the day, fellas! To old D.H. Lawrence.

I marvel at the precision of the memories of fans. I must have seen most of the goals mentioned in this thread but I cannot remember them with the clarity expressed by so many on here. I often find when I watch the highlights on a Sunday that many incidents weren't quite the way I'd remembered them from Saturday.

For sheer technique I'd say Ashcroft's recent goal against Ayr was as good as any Pars goal I've seen but maybe that's because it happened less than two weeks ago.

Everyone remembers the vanoli OG but rarely the 1st goal of the game which was a 25yard strike into the cop corner (on video links above)

Stevie Crawford scored a screamer in a win at the old Love Street, the season we challenged them for the title and went up as runners up - 99/00 I think?

Must've been about 40 yards, held off some challenges and smashed it into the roof of the net.

off topic ( slightly) but remember the niggle we had with st mirren around that time when both looking for promotion etc and then the monday night game at love street all those years later. All just seemed to die off when they moved ground and we were out the same leagues for a period of time. Guess was more the groups of players with Roy/Mendes/Baltatcha/Turner (ironically!) that were tough coming up against.

Strange how memory plays tricks - I thought that was a Crawford lob when he steered a headed on pass off Brewster following a free kick or goal kick.

Aye, very funny BPP. More likely you've been overdosing on the Viagra, I reckon. 😉

I'll reveal my personal favourite when the thread hits three figures, but I did drop a big clue further up.

Is yours not that (Bert Paton?) one against Raith in the 60s GG? where the boy dribbled it from the halfway line past half the Wee Team?

We've had this thread a few times :D

Was that not the 3-1 win against Hearts?

It's a fair cop, Guv. Outed - guilty as charged.

Those of us fortunate enough to have seen Bert Paton complete his hat trick in a 6-0 win v the wee team on Jan 1st 1968, will never forget it. There was a poster on here called Bertie walks on water or similar (maybe it's Bert himself? 😃) who described it far far better than I ever could, but here goes....

It was cold and thick flakes of snow swirled around EEP when Bert set off towards the wee team's goal at the Cowden end. The pitch was Skippy on top on account of the snow, but Bert's advance was as sure footed as any mountain goat's. He avoided challenge after slithering challenge as he slalomed into the wee team's box. How many players had he beaten? 4, 5, 6, 8 ? Another 2 inside the box, around the keeper and then rolled it between two desperate, lunging defenders on the goal line. Bert had beaten every opposing player at least once - and at walking pace at that.

At least that's how I remember it. Just like 3 Archie Gemmill's v Holland rolled into one.

GG I'm glad that we agree about Bert Paton's wonderful goal v Raith Rovers. There were only a few thousand that were at East End that day, and we were very lucky to see such a great goal. I had the pleasure of meeting Bert in 2017 at a Pars function at EEP. I spoke to him about that goal, and he had a big smile as we remembered such a great goal. As has been mentioned before, I seem to remember that Bert had white training shoes on, rather than boots as the pitch was covered in snow. Those were the days!

Barry Nic just edges Robbo but I went absolutely tonto at both of them.

Just mentioning some others not listed above

Andy Tod overhead kick up at Dens
Ivo Den Biemen on his debut at a packed Brockville opening day of the season
Seem to remember Ray Sharp scoring a belter as we demolished Ayr in a midweek game (we were banging the goals in that night/season)

Great memories all of this thread ;)

Make sure you swallow them. If they get stuck in your throat, you'll get a hell of a stiff neck!
