 Liverpool v Man City
Topic Originator: The One Who Knocks

Not quite a title decider as even defeat for Liverpool still leaves them firmly in the box seat. However if City should fall then its close to being a fait accompli as far as the title is concerned.
Loathe to say it will be a great game as often these occasions fail to live up to the hype and I wouldn't be surprised if it ended nil nil.

Much though this will stick in your craw, TOWK, this is the new "big match" in English football. There was a time when it was Man U v Arsenal and before that Man U v Liverpool, but these games only mean a lot to the fans of these clubs now.

I remember suggesting that Man U had missed the boat by failing to go for either Pep or Klopp and being laughed at by the Dotnet Man U supporters club....

"They're not laughing now", as Bob Monkhouse once said, when he said that people laughed at him when he was a boy and told them he wanted to be a comedian when he grew up. ☺

It's pretty obvious why TOWK is tipping Liverpool to wrap up the title with a home win today. :-)

It'll be hard for any other team to finish above Liverpool or City this season and it would be ironic if Brendan Rodgers was to deny Liverpool fans the one trophy they so desperately crave, but stranger things have happened in football.....

Like a 5,000/1 outsider and odds on relegation favourites winning the EPL, or did I just make that up?

A city win and it opens the league up and as was said, don't dismiss both Leicester and Chelsea who are very strong this season. Liverpool can afford to drop points but they know the significance of a victory today psychology on the nearest challengers.
Not even close to making a prediction for this one.

I disagree... But that's only my opinion. Pool have a habit of being "nearly men" so I'm certainly not getting carried away if we win.
Lots of twists and turns to come.
Leicester are on fire and could very well be contenders

Should’ve been a penalty to Man City. Great strike never the less although as Neville said. A better keeper wouldn’t get beat from that distance.

First one either looked a penalty or a free kick to Liverpool if it came off Bernados hand first and I'd like to see the freeze that the VAR team used as it was certainly close.

Yeah half time just did the VAR thing with all the lines and he was onside.
First one looked dodgy (ie before Liverpool went up and scored it looked a pen) but then the man City handball just before the Liverpool hand ball looked the very similar to me in terms of arm position so not sure

Great result for Liverpool that with clinical finishing. They didn't play particularly well and rode their luck on occasions but a very important three points. City have some very tough games coming up before Christmas which could decide their fate.
Might be worth looking at Leicester and Chelsea as the title challengers.

He'll need to serve his apprenticeship first, BPP. Not a good idea to try and forecast a game you have a vested interest in, as it leads to unavoidable bias. TOWK, and his fellow Man U aficionados, were desperate for City to win, such is their loathing of Liverpool.

He tried his best to jinx the Scousers, to no avail. While both Chelsea and Leicester are a good bet for a top 4 place, I don't think they're quite ready for a genuine title tilt, but may well have a big say in who does win it. It's now Liverpool's to lose, but there's a long way to go and City are still the team most likely to deny them, imo.

While it is true I hate Liverpool with a passion I did honestly think that the game could have been a damp squib much like the last time City played at Anfield. One of City's main problems, other than the lack of quality centre halves minus Laporte, is the lack of physical fight. They picked up one booking today for dissent and only commited five fouls. When Fergie was in his pomp and leading his troops into battle against a skillful Arsenal he sent them in with bayonets fixed. They didn't like it up 'em. A two or three crunching challenges into Liverpool' s front three wouldnt have gone amiss.

I thought the 0-0 draw last season at Anfield was one of the best goalless draws you're likely to see personally. The intensity was outstanding from both teams.

Man City quality all over the park then a black hole in central defence in context to the rest of squad.

Weird thing is warning signs were there even before Kompany retiring he wasn't a regular the last season prior to that and the various combinations all looked a bit ropey.

Stones looks like he finally has got rid of the silly mistakes and general casualness then out of nowhere it's back to square one and he makes a daft mistake. Otamendi can be solid but too many rash decisions and rush of blood to head type moments.

Need Laporte fit again ASAP and another centre half, possibly two, in the next window.

Think Liverpool will win it to the delight of all their glory hunting fans. You never really hear of people supporting Norwich, Burnley etc that don't come from the area. However thousands who have no ties to Liverpool claim to support them. Despite in a lot of cases never ever seeing them except on Tele.

So people support Liverpool from Scotland and they're not glory hunters. Aye right. Nothing to do with 18 titles, 6 European cup wins, 3 UEFA cup wins, 7 FA cup wins, and 8
league cup wins Funny I don't know anyone claiming to support Tranmere despite coming from the same area.

I was a Liverpool fan before the first European cup win to be fair and many of the other wins you list.
I liked their style back in the 70's and the strong Scottish connection did it for me.

I supported Liverpool before I started supporting the PARS... The year was 1976 which means I was 5 years old...2 years before I started supporting the PARS.
Why?... Cos it was the first game I'd ever seen on the telly.
Pretty sure it was spurs vs Liverpool... And my 8 year old cousin decided he was supporting Spurs ... So I decided to support the team they were playing.
Also pretty sure pool won the league that season but I could be wrong.
Started supporting the PARS cos I could get in for free during the last half hour of home games... We were poor so it was the only way for me to see live football.
Second division I think... And we didn't win the league that season as far as I recall.
But again I could be wrong.
I'll remember the year always cos my mum went berserk when she found out I was cycling to East End park from Touch on Saturdays when we were at home... She thought I was just oot wi my pals riding bikes lol.
Only got caught cos one day I brought home a sheet of blue coloured A4 with the signatures of all the players on it that I had been given by someone at the game.
So if supporting the same two sides I've supported since 1976 and 1978 makes me a glory hunter.... Then I suppose I'm a glory hunter.
Oh.. For the record... I know two Scousers who support Tranmere rovers as it happens.
P. S.... I still don't think the title is won.... Lots of games and points still up for grabs. Liverpool seem to always find a way to mess it up🤣

When Liverpool scored the first goal, I was having flashbacks of Bobo Baldi and Henrik Larsson. In the space of a few seconds we were denied a stonewall penalty and lost a goal. It cost us the Scottish cup.

''Liverpool deserve to win the League to be honest. Excellent to watch and they have been murdering the best teams in Europe over the last wee while.''

A bit premature to be making such a statement, Frank. I don't dispute that Liverpool are playing an exciting brand of football, but the league is won over 38 games, so they'll deserve it when they've amassed a points total which no other team can match.

At this moment, it's theirs to lose though.

You can be sure that most people criticising others for supporting Liverpool and calling them glory hunters are the same people who have referred to them as Loserpool and can't handle it when they look like achieving something. I like Liverpool and have done for at least 50 years. I've even been to Anfield a few times and feel under no obligation to have to justify doing so.

Agree with Ross about the Scottish connections and Frank about the Liverpool fans although i’m slightly biased - my father was an Aberdeen supporter whose favourite player was Martin Buchan - i’ve had a soft spot for the mighty Reds ever since he went down to Old Trafford - and then of course there was Jordan, McQueen and Macari.

I’d love to see Klopp’s reaction if they lose a couple of games to dodgy VAR decisions.

And what's wrong with taking a fancy to a good team from another league?

I would like to see Liverpool win the league this year because they have Robertson and I like Klopp. I'd also like to see villa do we'll because of McGinn (and I'm saying that sitting in a hull city fleece

I have a sneaking suspicion that Leicester will have a big say in where the title goes and with experienced premier league players and a number of premier league winners I would not be counting them out yet.....

They have a great blend of youth and experience and are playing without fear

I hate the term bottled it and it is used far too often to describe a team who lose what should have been the initiative ....Liverpool did not bottle it last year they were beaten by the better team on the day and lost out by only 1 point to finish second in the Premiership They have a wee cushion just now but their is a long way to go and the lesser teams have narrowed the gap (slightly) on the bigger teams
There is every chance Liverpool will finish second again to Man City as I do believe they are the best team in the league but Liverpool will fight all the way and will Never bottle it ......Its a funny old game

Last season wasn't a bottle clearly. It was an extraordinary effort from City to win that league but I must say, if Liverpool blow a 9 point lead over them this time, it would be down to bottle. No two ways about it.
Last season it was a 7 point lead but they had a game in hand as well and inflicted Liverpool's only defeat in that spell.
No excuses this time round from me anyway if they can't go on and win the title.

From 23 November to 2 January, Liverpool face a period of 12 games in 37 days in four competitions - the Premier League, Champions League, EFL Cup and Club World Cup - with an FA Cup third-round tie still to be determined in the first week of 2020.I will assess it at the end of that period as that could stretch their squad.I bet they wish they didn't have to go to play in Qatar at all.

I see City losing more games though with their weakness in defence. Laporte and Sane have been big misses for them this season although they should have had a squad capable of dealing with their loss better.Chelsea and Leicester look set to complete the top 4 this season imo
