 Dementia Friends Award
Topic Originator: Sliema Par
Date:   Wed 13 Nov 13:03

What an honour for Dunfermline Athletic and the Pars Foundation to have received this award, the first professional Football Club in Scotland.

It is reckoned over 90,000 people in Scotland suffer this ghastly illlness and as many as 4% are not Pensioners.Few of us go through life unaffected by it.

As Kelly Armstrong points out ,those affected can have a feeling of isolation in the community due to our lack of understanding or stigma.

At East End those affected will be met with understanding and will be valued.

It is only recently that I learned of the wonderful treatment of the disabled by unpaid volunteers at a match.

We might never be top of the Premiership ,but the club should be just as proud of this.At the end of the day we are a Community club.

Great stuff by DAFC, the Pars Foundation, Kenny and everyone else involved. It's a remarkable achievement.

You can read about the Dementia Friends concept here on the Alzheimer Scotland site, and you can follow the link to the online training package (it's not too difficult, and I would recommend it for use in daily life.)

Mention was made earlier in the thread about the Match Buddies who are there to offer help to our disabled fans on the viewing platforms at EEP. All the Match Buddies have done the online training and are now registered as Dementia Friends.

I believe all of the customer-facing DAFC staff and volunteers will have done likewise, or will have attended training seminars that achieve the same outcome.

It would be fantastic if we could persuade as many of our fans as possible to go on to the link Stanza has provided and take the 10 minutes to complete the online training and become a Dementia Friend

It really is that simple, 10 minutes to watch a couple of short videos and you receive an online printable certificate and Alzheimer Scotland send you out your Dementia Friends badge

I’ve done it, please take 10 minutes to do it too

Parrot, you were asking where to access the simple training course well it’s there for you, be a Trailbalzer and be the first to post up to say you have done it

Ill be doing it. I go into care homes with my wife and do art sessions. She has a franchise fb page is creativemojo "Fife and South Perthshire". Actually sitting in Arbroath after doing an all day session with primary kids in the morning then a session a local home with the kids helping. The residents and kids are amazing together. They really make a difference.
We have gained a lot of experience working with hundreds of residents over the past 18 months but we have no formal qualifications. This sounds ideal.

There’s live training where you can discuss it and ask questions and be told of real life examples. I did that one - couple of hours. Really good

If any of our local businesses would be interested in achieving
the accreditation please drop me an email and I will put you in touch with Ruth McCabe the Fife Council Dementia liaisons Officer

Ruth will visit your premises and advise on what, if anything, you would need to do and will be happy to provide the training free of charge

This is a huge initiative for Fife Council and one which should be supported, over 400 local companies have signed up to date. Ruth and I attended the business club to give a short presentation recently
