 Red Card and Penalty

I was under the impression that referees had been instructed not to automatically send off players who concede a penalty and that a yellow card would suffice in such cases. Was it referred to as '' double jeopardy " or something similar?

I'm not suggesting the ref today was a homer, just looking for clarification on the rule. These often change so often in football it's hard to keep up.

I believe it's when a genuine attempt has been made to win the ball.

Ah, cheers TOWK. Thistle's captain couldn't be accused of that. After getting his pocket picked, he compounded his folly by giving Kiltie a hefty shove just as he was about to shoot.

Aye, they scraped the double punishment for challenges where the defender is deemed to make a genuine attempt for the ball.

For challenges where you're denying a clear goalscoring opportunity and not trying for the ball then you'll be sent off.

has to go he was the last man ;)

But on the actual LoTG as grant said, DOGSO without attempt to play the ball is still a sending off offence.

Yup - ref got it right. O'Ware made no attempt to play the ball, and prevented a clear goal scoring opportunity. Ref got it absolutely correct.

Having watched the highlights, I'm surprised we got the second penalty too - would have been easy for the ref to wave that one away. I mean, it's a foul, and the correct decision, but I've seen loads of those types of fouls not given.
