 Premier League on Amazon Prime
Topic Originator: RossF
Date:   Wed 4 Dec 23:29

Was a bit surprised and disappointed at how far behind this was to real time tonight. Sky’s goal alerts were coming in a minute quicker than the games! Hopefully they can improve this for the Xmas games. It would be good to see another challenger to sky.

Streaming will always be behind broadcasting in terms of time. They have to record it compress it upload it to the severs then you have to go and fetch it from the servers. An extra couple of layers which is were the delay comes from.

In Horse Racing one channel is working to produce a stream with a 0.4 second delay to actual live events, currently the delay is 1.5 seconds.
Amazon’s delay must be nearer 90 seconds behind live, which is ridiculous.

I watched it last night and had no idea it wasn’t in real time - didn’t spoil my enjoyment whatsoever - although having to listen to Glenn Hoddle prattle on was a distraction I could have done without - even considered switching over to the Anfield game at one point but with Liverpool already in front I just couldn’t bear it 😩

I think there is as I'm sure it said there was in Tuesday nights game. I've had ever so slightly juddery pictures in the two games I've watched so they need to sort that as well.

I actually hope it dies a death as the kick off times are horrendous from a supporters perspective and its yet another subscription fee to fork out for.

Any streaming live sports I've ever watched has this issue, I was hoping it was due to the 3rd party/iptv supplier, but of Amazon have the same issue then it could be to do with the technology

I don't have sky or bt but have an amazon prime account so gave it a bash Did not realise it was a stream tbh ..... watching it on a MacBook switched games from Man UT (which was good quality) at full time to get the last 40 minutes of the Liverpool game and the picture kept blurring

If you’re not plugged into an aerial of some kind (tv, sat, cable) I’m not sure what mechanism anyone would think is being used to supply the feed other than streaming. However, the delay was comparable to watching Sky Sports, BT and others on an online device where I long ago learned to switch goal alerts and WhatsApp off if I wanted to avoid the score.

I do get Broadband through Sky and had a nightmare of a time getting the game to connect on my Samsung tv when Netflix and other Prime Video worked fine so did start to suspect shenanigans at one point but hopefully just a glitch. I do hope it fails though, far to many content providers after our cash these days.

From a selfish perspective suits me great - I refuse to pay the exorbitant fees of Sky and make do with Netflix and Amazon Prime at a fraction of the cost - the fear of course is that their fees will simply go up.

I watched a bit of two early games then the Liverpool game. Picture was UHD and immaculate. I've got fast internet tho with the box connected directly to the TV. I really enjoyed last night, being able to switch between games was good. A win for me.

I guess this was a bit of an experiment for both the PL and Amazon, God knows how they'll judge if it was a success or not given the apparent cost of 90 Million.

I'm working in Denmark mon-fri just now and the normal access to iplayer etc is geo blocked. I signed up for a free month of prime last week and it's been really good on the laptop the last 2 nights. The lag was no issue for me as I don't have alerts set on my phone and let's face it you could do without the phone or mute the alerts if you wanted to.

I think theres a difference between watching on a tablet and iPad vs the TV.

I get download speeds over 400M with a ping of about 29 even on WiFi and I've watched two different games on two different TVs and they both juddered a bit. Not enough to spoil watching the game but nowhere near watching Sky or BT Sport. I might try streaming through my laptop and hooking it up to my tv to see if that makes a difference.

The racing channels are able to produce SD and HD at the same delay.

Both of which require an absolute fraction of the bandwidth for 4k. Factor in a far greater number of viewers and stream latency will always be a factor. You even notice it on small streams going from 100 up to 1000 viewers with the latency, let alone millions.

Either way, Amazon's streaming services and Prime video imo are top of the line, as much as I dislike Bezos

Comparing about a 90 second delay to a live broadcast on a website where a few posts down there are pleas to bring food with you to the game on Saturday to give to a local foodbank.

Yes. It's either £79 a year or £7.99 a month depending on what subscription you take. That includes access to their catalogue of films and TV programs as well as same day and next day delivery for some items ordered via Amazon depending on where you live.

If you see any games you want to watch though you can take a 1 month free trial and cancel it before any payments are collected.

You are being robbed paying that much to Virgin. Have their top of the line 300mb/s broadband and I've paid £50 per month with no contract. Even with phone and TV on top that is a scandalous price

The motion juderring I was referring to in the first match i watched was more pronounced using a fire stick so I'd be inclined to try the laptop and HDMI to see how that works.

No, Westies, I'm just saying that moaning about a 90 second delay to a live sporting event that you wouldn't normally see is a bizarre thing to get so worked up about. It's not as if it was unwatchable or cut out or had adverts during the game or anything that spoiled the experience, and when there is a thread about a foodbank further down it becomes even more incongruous.

Anyway, it worked fine for me on all three nights watching on my phone and the quality was very good. Shows you how much money they threw at it when every game had a presenter and at least two pundits as well as a commentator and summariser, not to mention a host and handful of pundits on their version of the goal show.

Betting in play is tremendous if you beat the in play delay but you wont have an account for too long and it wont happen with a general commercial broadcast.
