 Starting Team vs Dundee
Topic Originator: preston par
Date:   Thu 23 Jan 10:01

Not been to a game in a wee while and with few players leaving, jut wondering what we think is the strongest lineup for tomorrow nights game (not expecting Crawford to agree with mine). I'd give the two wingers more freedom to support Nisbet.
I'd go for:

Gill

Comrie
Murray
Ashcroft
Martin

Dow
Paton
Thomson
Turner
Thomas

Nisbet

This is assuming Beadling is out. If he isn't, I'd take Paton out (Crawford wouldn't).

Scully
Comrie Devine Murray Martin
Paton Beadling
Dow Thomson Thomas
Nisbet

that's if it was being played in a empty stadium...cant wait for the "support" if/when Scully and Devine are in the line up tomorrow night, Paton and McGill also...

Devine has been far more solid than Ashcroft recently. I’d like to see him dropped. I’m amazed how many people are anti Devine. What has he actually done wrong in recent games? Ashcroft was poor against Morton and up at Dens.

Despite losing the last 5 we are favourites for the game. What looks certain is goals, 2-2 first game and 4-3 in the return at Dens, both defences look leaky. They will play Johnson and Hemmings up front and possibly Callachan in behind supporting two up top to test our shaky centre backs.

Should be a good watch as its likely both teams are going to have a go, and if we can transition quickly there ought to be opportunities on the break.

Paton will be important he's broken up play in front of the back four on occasions this season and will need to Friday night. He's going to need help I would stick Martin in with him (if as expected Beadlings tonsilitis is still an issue) an under rated very comfortable two footed footballer who's done well in limited game time in midfield. There's still plenty creativity in front of them for me.
Crawford mentioned Ross can play as a 10 so lets give him an opportunity there.

Gill
Comrie Ashcroft Murray Edwards
Dow Paton Martin Thomas
Ross
Nisbet

I think, with what we have at our disposal just now, we're probably best just setting up to be hard to beat and try and break Dundee on the counter.

Play Paton just in front of the defence and two central midfielders, most likely Ross and Thomson, just get them to clog the midfield and use the wingers to get in behind, which will be Dow and Thomas, I guess.

Scully dropped for Gil and Murray replacing Devine. That, for me, will give us the best shot at getting a result.

Hopefully can grind something out to get the confidence back but I'm not holding my breath.

Unfortunately, after Alloa, Ayr and Morton, I feel as flat about the Pars chances as a pancake that's been flattened even more under a steamroller.

Ya still gotta keep the pecker up though 😅

Well how d'ye like that. I guess sometimes being under a steamroller don't feel so bad!

Has to play a 3 in midfield. Dundee have 6 options in there that are all better than ours.

I think Gill should probably come in for Scully, Murray needs to play centre back to try and shore up the defence. I can see the argument for picking Devine before Ashcroft, but hopefully the combination with Murray can get Ashcroft back to form, he offers more than Devine when he is playing well. Not sure about the centre of midfield, at least one of Thomson or Beadling in the centre to give us more energy, maybe both. If Beadling is not fit, probably Paton, but he needs to play in midfield, not between the centre backs. And that also probably means we need another midfielder behind Nisbet and to take out McGill.

Gill

Comrie
Ashcroft
Murray
Martin

Dow
Beadling
Thomson
Thomas

Nisbet
McGill

Subs: Scully, Devine, Paton, Ross, McCann, Turner & Todd

We are at home, I want to see us get at them, they are poor at the back as well, press them into mistakes.

If the Instagram story is anything to go by, shirts seem to be out in numerical order. Only 1 shirt between Scully (1) and Murray (5). That would mean either Comrie or Martin would be out, which would be a concern. Beadling’s shirt not up either.

Full match day squad looks to be:
Scully
Comrie/Martin
Murray
Ashcroft
Thomson
McGill
Dow
Turner
Ross
Devine
Nisbet
Morrison
Paton
Thomas
Edwards
Todd
McCann
Gill

There’s your 18.

Ethan Ross, what's the point ?

We needed boys to go right into this team and we keep him on the bench.

Dunfermline aren't in this game to slowly develop players for their parent team, not at the stage we're at the now anyway.

Will it be Murray at left back (where he has played before)? A big ask when he's just back from injury. It could be a three of course but who would play left wing back? Turner still in the team, he's surely due a good performance now. A real indication that if Nisbet gets injured we are totally screwed though.

McGill linked up fairly well with Nisbet against Morton, happy to see it tried again. Keeping Edwards out and covering Left Back with a CB seems harsh. Ross will give us energy and attacking threat off the bench if needed, would have liked to have seen him start

We've been solid so far, Murray doesn't look too out of place at LB, we gave them too much time early on but we've been putting pressure on the last 10-15 minutes. Terrible defending by Marshall though for the goal. Need to keep up the pressure

Incredible goal from Nisbet.

We picked it up in the last 15 minutes, please let's not put the handbrake on, we've showed twice against Dundee now that if you pressure them they'll throw the ball away, obviously it's impossible to keep up a high intensity for the full game, but if we couldn't sit back to the extent we normally do...

McGill has been awful on the ball, really good off it with his pressing.

Positives: Two really good goals.
Pressuring the opposition and closing them down. Particularly this.
Some of the build up play.
Negatives: Some nervy defence work - two defenders going to head the same ball with an attacker free!?
A promising free kick coming to nothing because our player was miles offside???
Taking a throw-in and it being returned straight out of play!
A corner that crosses the whole box and goes out of play.
On the whole though I'll happily take that halftime score. It may not be "great football" but there are promising signs.
Dundee are like a team of clueless tractor boys. The points really are there for the taking. Let's just hope we don't go all defensive in the second half and try to close the game down.

Dafc1966 the commentators are saying anything to fill the airtime. He’s worked hard and tried to put himself about but he’s better when we don’t have the ball.

Did Gill not bounce the ball and pick it up again - isn't that a foul?

Bit of a grim second half once we ran out of steam after the first 15 minutes or so but frinding it out while still looking good on the break and having the two best chances is pretty good.

Not many complaints by the Dundee players tells a story. Not the first time one of them has went down cheaply though. Thought McDaid should have been booked for his swan dive in the first half.

Totally dominated the game and credit to Stevie for getting the team right. Murray for me was really solid in that backline and gave us that extra bit of physicality when we needed it. Only criticism would be we should've scored 4 or 5

Restricted Dundee to very little and deserved winners. By no stretch a classic but both our goals were good goals and we created a few other half chances and got ourselves into positions where we might have done better. A good 3 points.

They weren't but we had the ball in the corner for about 4 minutes at one point and I thought that showed excellent game management to keep the ball up there.

They are in a playoff spot because they are being challenged by seversl teams who are equally as inconsistant as each other.

Paton totally won the battle of the older guys in the middle with McGowan ineffectual and removed after about an hour and Dorrans pretty anonymous. Berkey will be along in a minute to tell me I'm wrong mind you.

Thought the oft-malligned Devine was pretty good too, although I'd prefer him to stick to defending and show that concentrating every week rather than him thinking he's a Scottish Beckenbauer. McGill put himself about well although the quality was lacking a little. Really hoped we'd get the killer third rather than wasting time with 7 or 8 minutes still to play when injury time was factored in but we didn't do anything daft this week apart from the one chance we gave up where the Dundee boy slashed it wide when he should have hit the target. Onwards and hopefully upwards.

I was also impressed with Devine. Thought he was pretty effective with the ball at his feet.
It looked early on as if the defenders were under instruction to take no chances and hoof it long though.

solid throughout, everyone involved stuck to their task and the overall plan, thought we were in control for large parts of the game, a very welcome 3 points!

exactly but that's still too much for some people at EEP to understand.

Good win that, and well deserved in the end. Strange game, fitba. We made plenty of good second half chances that we couldn't take, but in a largely dire first half we had two and scored twice.

Great goal from Nisbet, and the view of it from the NW was beautiful. You could see exactly where it was going long before it went past the keeper. I was watching him quite closely in the build up to it, and it was interesting that he deliberately didn't challenge for it and instead took a chance of getting a break of the ball. Great play from him once the ball got to his feet.

I was really pleased with how we did at centre half tonight. Devine was really good in the main and possibly our best player over the game, and Ashcroft did pretty well too. In that spell when we were forced deep in the second half we had to defend a lot of crosses and we did it well. The most pleasing thing for me is that we got through a spell of pressure without losing a goal, something we've really struggled to do for a while. Good efforst all over the park I thought, with Paton doing well in both attack and defence while Dow and Nisbet in particular looked good in attack.

The last 10 minutes were really good - it didn't bother me at all that we didn't go for another goal and I thought we did exactly the right thing. It was quite an impressive way to see out a game and I think the only other time we;ve done that was at home against QOS in our best display of the season in November.

I'm very happy with that, and great to see them all playing for each other, playing for the team, and doing what was needed to make sure we took the points.

Disagree, thought it was beautiful. There's ways to win games and that was the right thing to do, outstanding.

From the first goal onwards that was an impressive performance, chuffed with that.

Grant is correct. See the game out.

Plonkers around me screaming at Gill to launch it to Nisbet in the last 10 minutes too. He quite rightly took his time.

Encouraging

I didn't see the game (it was the middle of the night in Singapore) but I'm delighted we got a couple of bookings.

I know it sounds like an odd thing to say, but it's really annoyed me that we've been losing games with no one getting booked. It suggested a bit of a lack of physical commitment.

First 25 minutes last night was tedious from both sides and must have been a dreadful spectacle on TV - crowd must have looked embarrassing - would have been more if it hadn’t been on TV but I’m not sure by how many - I know a number of Dundee fans and they’ve been incredibly critical of their team - I thought they were being over the top but not so sure now - they’ve just given Dorrans a new contract and he was anonymous - god only knows what they’re paying him.

After we scored we looked good - Nisbet is a cut above anything we’ve had up front for a considerable time - his movement in the box to find space is fantastic and he played some lovely little balls to his teammates- on another night he could have scored 4. On that performance we got the better of the Thomas and Kiltie deal - football is supposed to be an entertainment - Thomas entertained me. Delighted that Gill got a clean sheet - I’ll bet Scully was sitting with a wry smile on his face though as he really had nothing to do. The other loaner Ross also looked very promising when he came on. I also agree with the posters who comment that the players are right behind the manager - this was great to see.

For me though this game demonstrated exactly why I have reservations on Crawford - I’ve said all along that the team have ability way above what they’ve been showing and what our points total suggests - we need to see this type of performance much more regularly. It would also have been interesting to see how we reacted had Dundee scored - we closed the game down really well in the last 5 minutes but there was a period before that where we just couldn’t keep a hold of it in the middle of the park.

The youngsters doing all the singing were fab - especially trying to lift the team in the first 20 minutes - good to see the team going over to them at the end.

I suspect we can’t afford to sign anyone but presume we can still bring in 2 loanees - a goalkeeper and a central midfielder to play alongside Paton for me - and I’m praying Nisbet doesn’t get injured because we’re in trouble if he does.

2 other players worth a mention. McGill - still not convinced he’s a football player but he ran his heart out. Devine - I’ve always said he gets far more stick on here than warranted - good to see him getting a few accolades.

Fingers crossed this was a turning point and we can go on a run.

Ha ha Kelty, made exactly the same comparison with DD and Kaiser Franz. He had a decent game though, defending well and most of his passes found a team mate.

What about Ralph Callachan though? He's now replaced the torn faced John Terry as the footballer whose dish I'd most like to slap..... :-)

Towards the end of the game I thought that Nisbet had taken an injury and was struggling. Therefore I was shouting at Crawford to get him off. Then Crawford got a message to him and Nisbet jesturing. Apologies from me for questioning the coaching staff.

"Did Gill not bounce the ball and pick it up again - isn't that a foul?"

Don't remember anything like this happening and not 100% sure what you mean? You can bounce the ball as often as you like (indeed keepers used to do it a lot when you were only allowed something like 3 steps with the ball in your hands so bouncing it allowed you to get further forward like in Gaelic Football or Aussie Rules). What you can't do is drop it, have the ball at your feet/dribble then pick it up again; that would be a foul and lead to an indirect free kick. Unless the laws have changed you also can't dribble the ball out of the box, then back in and pick it up - Socks might be the man to know as he's refereed before.

Thanks KP- I looked the law up and you are correct, they use the term "in possession" - the keeper is deemed to still be " in possession " ( and therefore an attacker cant attempt to play the ball) when the keeper bounces it or throws it into the air and re catches it. Being " in possession" does end when the keeper drops the ball to the ground.

When you have been brought up on the "4 step" rule it's hard to keep up! Perhaps my imagination but do many keepers bounce the ball now? I will keep an eye out.

Ruitenbeek got penalised at Livingston years ago for dropping it then picking it up again (indirect freekick inside box) but i cant think of any other time since the rule change.

Kris Mampaey got penalised for something obscure at Airdrie but it might have been the six second rule rather than dropping & picking up again, cannot quite remember.

It may have been TAFKA. The 6 second rule is still in the IFAB Laws of the Game (its part of Law 12 for those interested) but I can't remember the last time I saw it enforced.

LochgellyAlbert. I wondered about that chat between Crawford and Byrne but I suppose it could have been about anything. Byrne hasn't played since he was a second half sub against us mid December and Dundee started with a youngster in midfield in this game. Wonder if Byrne is on the way out from Dundee.
