 CL Tonight
Topic Originator: GG Riva

We've finally arrived at the stage when the CL becomes interesting and hopefully, exciting, because it's now played like the old European Champions Cup - a straight knockout competition.

In spite of UEFA's best efforts to keep the bigger clubs apart with their Wimbledon style seeding system, the last 16 has thrown up some very interesting ties.

Tonight we have Atletico v Liverpool and BVB v PSG. Would love to watch both but will reluctantly plump for the Liverpool game, because I'm familiar with their players, but have a feeling the game in Dortmund may turn out to be a better spectacle.

Think the Liverpool game will just be standard fare. A 1 or 2 nil victory for Liverpool. The Dortmund v PSG game will a far more intruiging affair.

Noticed Atletico are going through a losing spell and a big injury list as well but still think it will be tight

I'd be dumbstruck if you chose to watch the Liverpool game tonight, TOWK, so I'm guessing you'll be a Dortmunder for the evening? ☺

Atlético are an embarrassment. Their players are going down like they’ve been shot at every opportunity. This was always going to be a tough game for Liverpool

Yes Rossf, the referee is allowing himself to be duped by it. The worst ever game for cheating I ever attended was Celtic and Athletico Madrid in Glasgow. That team took cheating to ridiculous levels and possibly the leopard can't change its spots.

I’ve been watching Dortmund and PSG
Haaland has scored with a rocket from 20 yards. Impressive displays from Sancho and Claudio Reyna’s son.
PSG have now scored in their last 49 away games
Cracking game

Haaland looks to be the next big thing in European football. Think he has 8 goals in 5 bundesliga games? Terrific striker. Scotland could well face him should we beat Israel, yikes...

Haland scored his first 5 goals for Dortmund after only playing 56 minutes for them. He's now on 10 goals after 7 Champions League appearances-a bargain at 20 million euros.

It makes you wonder what Real (way ahead of Ath Mad in la liga) will do Man City (way behind Liverpool in the EPL) when they meet next week.

Watched the highlights of BVB v PSG and it confirmed what I suspected beforehand - that I chosen to watch the wrong game live.

Liverpool will feel they can overturn their single goal deficit at Anfield, when they think back to their amazing comeback v Barca last season. Ironically, this might be a tougher mission for them. That game was a one off and some of the Barca players maybe thought the tie was already won....

Atletico know the tie is very much alive and will scrap for everything. Defensively, they'll give little away and if they manage a goal from a counter attack or set piece, I can see Liverpool heading out.

From the bbc parathletic No wonder Man Utd were after him :-

Thirty-nine goals. Six hat-tricks. Eleven goals in seven games for Borussia Dortmund. Ten goals in seven Champions League games. All at just 19 years old.

An interesting BBC article on Spurs CL opponents tonight:-

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51475532

They appear to arouse the same sort of animosity/antipathy in Germany, as Man City are currently experiencing in England.

Just another green-eyed monster?

To be fair although Red Bull may not be the heathltiest of drinks I don't think they forcibly 'dissappear' and torture their opponents. Nor do they operate secret prisons. Still both teams do play open attacking football so all sins forgiven I guess.
Interestingly RB haven't signed any players for than 20m. They sold Keita to Liverpool a couple of years back for 60m I think and by the time they flog Timo Werner I wouldn't be surprised if they are breaking even with their transfer outlay.

Not at all. They could arguably pick up 100m for Werner so that would greatly improve the transfer balance sheet.

Sheikh Mansour? Is he a member of the ruling royal family and a minister in the UAE government?

This article is from 2018 but an interesting opinion piece nonetheless.

It is a toughie PK and each person must make their own minds up. Say for instance the Sheikh was to buy the company I work for and all I to do to keep my job and therefore pay my mortgage and support my family would be to turn a blind eye then I'm not going to lie, I would turn a blind eye. That's not the choice faced here though.

Kidnap and torture?

We don't have to look too far for that:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/jun/28/uk-role-torture-kidnap-terror-suspects-after-911-revealed

As long as somebody somewhere mentions the words: suspected terrorist, half the country seems to think it's ok.

Which is my point earlier - why is that the deciding factor? We seem perfectly comfortable as a nation having our own Government that gets involved in unsavoury business but we sit in judgement of other Governments when they do something similar. On the whole nobody really bothers that much up until they buy a football team.

That's before we even get onto the fact that almost every large scale company investing in football sponsorship will at best have done something morally dubious or at worse deliberately acted in a way that's either caused death or serious harm to people.

The amount of people taking pot shots at the ownership of a football team versus all the other stuff that's significantly more important going on in the world tends to show that most folk don't really care.

TBF I've read your posts for years on here and you probably do care more than a lot of others although your distinction between taking money through ownership vs sponsorship is one I can't get my head around.

Ooer.... I seem to have started something when I tenuously linked RB Leipzig and Man City.

Of course, I was alluding to the fact that both clubs are enjoying the most successful spell in their history - a very brief one in Leipzig's case - and playing attractive football, but not too popular among fans of rival clubs. I put it down to simple jealousy, but some folk seem to think there's more to it than that.

We've had the same conversation on another thread GG :-)

To be honest even if our funds were completely beyond reproach of any kind, Germans (sweeping generalisation alert) despise the commercialisation of football and would hate any team that became successful off the back of external financial investment almost irrespective of who the owners are.

I see myself as a Pars first and foremost, but I'm also a football fan.

When I watch the Pars, I make allowances. We're what Bob Crampsey described as a ''middle order club'' in a relatively small country, so I'm realistic about the standard of football I'm watching. When we win, most of us go home reasonably happy, even after a poor game.

When it comes to watching football in general, I'm a shameless hussy - I want watch quality teams which play entertaining football. When the Pars dropped out of the European nights, I often went to watch Celtic, Hibs and Hearts playing attractive European clubs. (I never made it to Ibrox for a European game as I'd had a couple of negative experiences there as a Pars fan.)

On TV, I first salivated over the Man U of Best, Law and Charlton followed by, at various times, Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, QPR, Newcastle and Man U again. For various reasons, I could never take to Arsenal or Leeds. Today, I like watching City, Liverpool and Wolves - the rest of the EPL I can take or leave. I like the CL knockout stages, but will choose my games.

I don't see the need to resort to point scoring because someone has an affinity to a certain team and therefore has to slag off their main rivals.

I didn't see the game, but with no Kane or Son in the line up, I did wonder how Spurs were going to get on the scoresheet. I very rarely bet but I wonder what odds you'd have got on a "Spurs nil."

Eta. Nobody's mentioned it on this thread, but that was quite a result little Atalanta got v Valencia. Apparently, they have a brilliant youth academy, along similar lines to Ajax.

Bump!

For those who live too far away to go to the Pars game tonight, I recommend Barca v Napoli.

Where is the logic in going to watch a diddy wee team in a freezing stadium when you could watch a far higher standard in the comfort of your own living room?

Answers on a postcard, please....😉

Those of us who were at the Pars game last night missed Chelsea getting a real footballing lesson from Bayern.

Tonight sees the tie of the round, on paper, as Man City take on Real in the Bernabeu. Really looking forward to what should be a fascinating game with a superb atmosphere. If City can come back with a draw, they'll be well set up to go through at the Etihad.

The ref was excellent. I know aggression is a big part of his game but I genuinely don't understand how he has managed to rack up that many red cards. He's a d!ck but he's such a good player he doesn't need to get caught up or caught out the way he does for a lot of those sending off.
