Thought Roy Atiken would make it in before Malpas

I don’t think he played in the same team as macnamara.

He did mention Steve Nicol as a possibility but opted for Malpas because he was a specialist left back. He also said left wing was a close call between John Robertson and Davie Cooper. He said he roomed with Robertson for one international and his luggage comprised a rumpled suit and a packet of twenty fags.

He picked himself?

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd

It’s a strong enough looking side but one that would struggle to get out of a World Cup group. A solid crew, probably hard to beat, but clearly lacking pace in attack and midfield. Leighton and Bett were club colleagues of Miller’s so I think that has swayed his judgment, for neither of them were convincing international players. I would say the same about Malpas for although he was a fine club player he never looked at ease when playing in international tournaments.

One or two surprising omissions. Maybe Gough has been blocked out by McLeish and McGrain but he did look like a significant player on the big stage. Gordon McQueen when fit was a bigger figure than Alex McLeish. No Archie Gemmill? And was Jim Bett really better than John Wark? Or Paul McStay? Not many would call it that way.
