Heads up.

Tonight at 8pm, ITV 4 - the story of the final season of the former English Div.1 before the EPL came into being.

Could be an interesting distraction ?

Cheers, will watch it later or on catch up, sounds interesting.

Feels like a different era, before the money got completely out of hand.

When Sky Ruined Football would have been a better title.

I wouldn't imagine any of the Premiership clubs would agree with your sentiments, Zod, but I get where you're coming from. Read my post on the "Coming Home" thread.

I enjoyed last night's programme. Strachan was in good form. Great quip about him playing for Leeds in a crucial Championship decider v Sheffield United. He had a sore back and a hamstring injury, but he was "sent out all strapped up, like El Cid."

Not your average Sunday League player.

It certainly ruined football in this country. Greedy chairmen chasing sky's money, garbage foreign imports on thousands a week at the expense of young Scottish players, too many games on TV, kids growing up supporting English teams instead of their local sides etc etc. Alot of Scottish footballs problems can be linked to the start of the Premier League and us trying to keep up with it.

It's been a blessing and a curse - there's no doubt that the quality of football on display is higher now, which when watching games as a 'one-off' is wonderful to see.

But what the money has done, as it does in most capitalistic environments, is concentrated wealth and power, which in turn has removed a lot of the random variability that makes makes football so exciting. Teams with up and coming talent get broken up so much more quickly now, before they really have the opportunity to win anything, and these up and coming talents often then go on warm benches at the mega clubs.

In many ways Scotland have been trailblazers in allowing power to be centralised to a tiny proportion of clubs. I don't think in the mid 1990s that anyone in Europe would have looked at Scotland as the model they wanted to replicate - but that's EXACTLY what has happened. Completely unintentionally of course.

You make a fair point Zod, but I can’t totally agree with you. Sky’s coverage highlighted the inadequacy of the product on offer in Scotland, but it didn’t cause it.

Sometimes you have to look at yourself and admit that your problems are your own responsibility.

This past month, if nothing else, has highlighted the problems - poor leadership, a league structure that is uncompetitive and suits no-one other than a handful of clubs, a media who have agendas and don’t report in a fair and balanced manner, clubs who vote purely on self interest, an unequal sharing of funds, communities not supporting theIr local clubs etc etc

The problem with tv money is not that it exists, it’s in the way it is distributed. Sky are a commercial entity and want to maximise their viewing figures, so some games are more attractive than others. However it is those who vote to send that money in the direction of two clubs that cause the gap to widen, making the other clubs to be less competitive and thereby reduce the number of potentially attractive games and other clubs less attractive to supporters.

On the other hand, if money was more evenly spread and invested in the development of players, we would have a more competitive league, a better quality of young player coming through and in all probability, no real drop off in the standard of play compared to that produced by the “overpaid foreign imports”.

Until these issues are addressed, nothing will change. It doesn’t appear that the clubs have the cojones to do what’s needed so there is no hope of improvement, regardless of the billions of pounds that Sky are spending elsewhere.

It was an interesting programme.

Sheffield Wednesday ended up in 3rd position despite the highest goals against defeats that season - home and away.

As for Donald Trump making the draw for the League Cup.................... !!!
