 celebrity fans: quiz
Topic Originator: sammer

There’s nothing new about famous people declaring their undying love for a football team. Here are a few older examples from when it was not obligatory for a celebrity to have a favourite team.

1.

The big lad looks useful and was a pentathlete in his youth but the bearded guy looks lightweight. Name all three.

2.

I’m not sure who the bloke on the far left is, but name the other two flash gits in their sharp sixties suits.

3.

He looks a dud and has no chance of beating the keeper. Name both.

4.

They want to go to Chelsea. Name both.

5.

Once amongst the most powerful men in the world, he was at Rugby Park to see Kilmarnock play Rangers. Name him plus two Rangers players. BTW Eric Caldow is NOT one of them since he had been transferred before then.

6.

Macca on his way to Wembley. But to see what game? BTW the idiot in the Gestapo helmet to his rear is McCartney’s personal bodyguard.

7.

Captained his football team at school and clashed with a rival footballer then later dropped him as vocalist from his group. The schoolmate he dropped was a fellow Arsenal fan back then but now supports Celtic.

8.

A bunch of diamond geezers, but Soho Rangers were not really a team you would want to meet on a Sunday morning at Hackney Marshes in the early 1960s. Name four. Back left: famous British film actor who played tough guy roles; second back right: a gangster born in Lanarkshire with Italian background who was a big player in London at that time; back right: a professional psychopath who became a celebrity gangster in later life; second left front row: a notorious villain from South London who provided muscle for his better known brother.

9.

The older man once offered tactical advice about Peter Lorimer to the Scotland manager of the day during the 1974 World Cup Finals. It was ignored. Name both.

RhinoPars with 8/20 so far.

1. The third man in photo number one had one of the biggest selling records in the 1960s which topped the charts for a long time.

3. It's a satirist with Pat Jennings.

5. Hoeneker was a good shout for it's a top Soviet figure but not Kruschev or Brezhnev.

10. With Harold Wilson is the Players' Player of the year whose team I think won the English League that year.

No. 1 - Acker Bilk is your man.

No.2 - left, is that not one of the England 1966 World Cup squad ?
They all visited Pinewood Studios not long before the tournament.

No.5 - Soviet Premier Alexi Kosygin, with Willie Ross, Secretary of State for Scotland. A young Sandy Jardine and Dave Smith......not sure who is being presented with the ball though.

3. Peter Cooke, the luvvies favourite satirist, and Pat Jennings.

5. Alexei Kosygin, Foreign Minister of the USSR, handing ball to maybe Alex Willoughby in 1967. For sure Sandy Jardine is looking on with?

7. Rod Stewart is who this guy had an argument with at school.

8.
Stanley Baker

9. Harold Wilson and Colin Todd. 1975 I imagine.

VEE correct on Dave Smith in foreground for Rangers photo. Willie Ross the big honcho in Scotland- maybe you're right. A great spot. Rangers won the game 2-1 and Kosygin though the atmosphere was terrific.

Willie Ross, without a shadow of a doubt, 100%.

I'm going to make an erse of myself and suggest No.2 left is England reserve goalkeeper Ron Springett.

Incidentally - the was probably Killie's first game at Rugby Park aftr we'd dumped them out of the Scottish Cup about 10 days before before.

2-2 at Kilmarnock, great cup tie, with Sir Fergie scoring both Pars goals - then a 1-0 replay win at EEP....guess who scored with a long range belter !!!

Not such a happy time for Rangers though, they'd lost at Berwick the day we were in Ayrshire.

MCT,
Macca is going to watch Everton but I think it is the 1966 FA Cup Final which Everton won 3-2 v Sheffield Wednesday.

4. The actress was rumoured to fancy Peter Osgood.

7. One of his songs has the line: 'I love my football, on a Saturday.'

8. Extreme right back row spent 42 years in prisons and has a nephew I think who recently played professional for one of the lower league London teams.

Yes. Mad Frankie is extreme right back row. He fancied himself as a full back I believe.

And in the front row is Eddie Richardson, notorious brother of the notorious Charlie.

Good shooting from many quarters. thenatural knows his London gangsters and the only one missed was Albert Dimes, born in Lanarkshire but raised in the 'Little Italy' of Clerkenwell. Dimes was quite a suave character and had influence both sides of the river.

I forgot to acknowledge Fanny Hill and Raquel Welsh earlier which was photo number 4.

niels and parpold knew their politics although VEE deserves special mention for recognising Willie Ross, once called 'The Headie of Scotland.' I think he may well be right in thinking goalkeeper Peter Springett is the smoker alongside Greaves and Connery. I was surprised that Acker Bilk was recognised so early on.

I'd no idea until this week that Rod Stewart and Ray Davies of the Kinks were at school together in Muswell Hill and knew each other through both football and music. Rod was apparently a tough tackling centre half while Ray was a creative attacking midfielder.

No.2 - my initial vague suspicion was that "the smoker" was Ron Springett - although that could be a load of mince.

If you look closely he is wearing the same tie as Greavsie, so I reckon that confirms he was part of the England WC squad that visited the film studios.

Interestingly - his brother Peter was a goalkeeper, and it is believed they were the only siblings to feature in a single transfer deal when Ron went from Sheffield Wednesday to QPR, and Peter went in the opposite direction in 1967.

Peter had won a League Cup medal in 1967 v West Brom and a Third Division championship gong as well.

Ron's daughter Terry played for England's womens team - maybe another family record ?

Blame Sammer for starting these threads !!!

Ralph Coates ?

I don't think he was in England's 1966 squad - he was a bit on the small side, and had a rather distinctive head of hair if I mind right.

Couldn't put names to Acker Bilk and Peter Cook but they were familiar.

Wasn't Ralph Coates balding and used to do a "Bobby Charlton" sweeping some long strands pf hair over the top of his head to try to cover his bald pate?

It's certainly Ray Wilson with the fag.

Everybody seems to have missed the player hidden by Alex Willoughby in the Kosygin photo.

I'm pretty sure it's our very own Alex Smith. He had gone to Ibrox in the summer of 66 and was a regular in the team in 1967 when this picture was taken.
