 Quiz question for Sammer
Topic Originator: veteraneastender
Date:   Tue 9 Jun 14:26

This will be too easy - but here goes.

1. Who was the first Scottish player to appear in the final of any of the major European club competitions under the then applicable rules/format ?

There is a supplementary to follow when correct answer is forthcoming - which won't be too long methinks !!!

Neils - I see where you are coming from - but that wasn't a club competition, should have been clearer.

No cigars yet.

"The Rangers team that reached the 1961 Cup Winners Cup final."

Ooops - apologies - I goofed - that would be the correct answer if I'd worded it more clearly.

I'm thinking of an individual player - and it's not a Scottish club.

Mea culpa.............................

Cigars to sadindiefreak and neils.

Well done.

Bertie Auld played for Birmingham City in the home leg of the 1960/61 Fairs Cup final on 27th September 1961 - a 2-2 draw with Roma who won the cup with a 2-0 victory in Italy - "The Chin" didn't feature over there.

Now for the follow up - if I get this wrong................. exiled to Falkirk !!!

Can you name the first Scottish player(s) to win any of the major Euro trophies ?

Well confirmed neils, Wee Eck got there first.

"And scored- a Musselburgh lad"

Although a few years older than Roy Barry, I wonder if they knew each other ?

John White's brother Tom was with Hearts same time as RB.

My uncle Bob ( from Musselburgh) knew them, or at least spoke a fair bit about them, another football heartland around there back in the days, wee mining towns and villages surround.

There are older Alloa fans who remember John White.

He was among the last generation who did National Service - the Army's Cross Country champion at one point.

VEE,

Sorry I got on to the site a bit late. Bertie Auld would have played in 3 European cup finals and I don't think even Emlyn Hughes or Ray Kennedy will have played in more.

Here's a similar question.

Who was the first Scot to appear in a European Cup Final?

Yes, referee Jack Mowat was the first Scot in 1960. I thought the penalty he awarded Real was a poor decision.

Phil Neal probably played in five finals? One EUFA and four Champions?

Ray Kennedy played in 5 finals. Three European Cup and two EUFA Cups, the first with Arsenal when it was the Fairs Cities Cup. He won them all as well.

Hugely impressive. Didn’t realise he’d won as many as that. Just shaded by Neal’s four European Cups and one UEFA Cup.

Ref. Bertie Auld Sammer - you mean 3 finals of any competition I assume.

Fairs Cup x 1 and European Cup x 2.

Here's an obscure one - all football related connections apart, direct and indirect, what was remarkable about the lineups in the 1962/63 ECWC final ?

No accessing reference sources !!!

Phil Neal played in 5 European Cup Finals, losing the last one played in the Heysel Stadium. So six finals in total with 5 wins.

Atletico were the holders so maybe the very same 11 played again the following year?

I checked the 1963 ECEC and worked out the answer.

Clue: A player called Wilson won the World Cup for Brazil(1970) as did an Argentinian called Brown (1986).

You can always rely on Sammer.

Cliff Jones - nothing remarkable there - but playing against a Spaniard with the same surname in a major final is not an everyday co-incidence.

Miguel was born in what was then Spanish Guinea and brought up in Bilbao.

Because he was not a native Basque he could be chosen for the local Atletico - and was the first black Spaniard to emerge as a top player.

He passed away recently.
