It says player/coach role, the player role would see him and Comrie fighting for the RB position.

How on earth is signing a former Scottish internationalist with the career he’s had, on a one year deal as a player coach a bad move?

There’s a pandemic on, we won’t play league games til October, yet we pull this level of signing off, and people are moaning. Why?

Good signing, can see him playing in his midfield role, Hibee mate saying he was ever present and playing really well before Lock down. Defo scorer against the Jambos

Whittaker has played every position except centre forward and goalkeeper in his career, although he is better out wide (right and left). He will be able to fill in a lot next season, either starting games or coming off the bench.

Both good signings for different reasons, Watson is better than Ashcroft or Devine imo so an upgrade there. Whittaker can fulfil several positions and replace Paton as the veteran of the team adding vital experience and obviously looking to start up his coaching experience as well.

The squad, (defence in particular) was in okay shape given the numbers released last month. That's probably all the cover we need there now? Midfield and forwards are the areas we need to sign several players to make up for losses from last season, wouldn't be surprised for us to delve into the loan market again as well. Curious to see what unravels over the coming weeks as Scottish football begins to start up again

So a hugely experienced international who has been there and done it with Rangers, Hibs and Norwich is seen as underwhelming or a bad move. Only on .net!

Good stuff, so that's serious experience then, was a full blown internationalist too- bound to rub off, not to mention good habits.

Plenty flexibility as a player too.

a keeper, a centre midfielder, a left midfielder and a striker are a must. anything on top of that is a bonus imo.

Whittaker's debut for Hibs was a little strange. He'd been in the squad but wasn't one of the named subs. Someone got injured in the warm up and Bobby Williamson put him straight in. He had a very good game
When quizzed after the game, Williamson was honest enough to say that, as his contract was expiring, he had been thinking of letting him go.

So, had it not been for that injury, a young Whittaker would perhaps have ended up at EEP much sooner? Maybe he might have dropped out the game altogether?

Thems the breaks, as they say

Would play him CDM in a three man midfield whilst offering depth at both full back positions. Put him in with a couple of midfielders than can do his running and he’ll do great. Has to be our captain with his experience

I see that Whitiker is going to be coaching as well as playing. Are we going to lose a coach? If there is not going to be a reserve team, is there going to be a youth team?

Joe ain't ready to retire yet & focus on coaching, he's still got another good season in him. Plus this will merely be a stepping stone for Steven, hense the one year deal.

Have any other Championship sides made signings yet? Are we maybe stealing a march on them by signing so early? It'll be expensive if we continue to do so though.

Possibly that why the chairman wants us to buy early season tickets.

Both were free agents so it's really just replacing wages from those that left us so far.

Two great singings.

Whittaker is a perfect replacement for Paton....with more legs.

Watson will be great CH for us alongside Murray.

Whittaker, Martin, Murray can play all along the back line so gives us great room for manoeuvre with inevitable injuries and suspensions.

CM and CF required next, along with another wide man, hopefully Thomas.

Wasn't it expecting these signings, or so early.

Certainly got the makings of a really good team here.

Was expecting bare bones, but we have time here to think about up front, also league one and two (England) have released loads, and suddenly affordable.

Having thought about it, I think I see the logic of signing players early even if it means paying wages for players sitting at home initially.

The players in the squad who have contracts still running from last season are obviously still being paid. When the players all come together for training it might cause resentment if the new signings felt their contracts were delayed to save the club money in the short run whilst their new team-mates were being paid in full. That would be very bad for morale in the squad.

You never know, new signings might want the security of a contract however might not start financially until August?

Dundee look like there trying that with current players, deferrals etc

Let's face it we are a reasonable sized club. Because of that if we are interested in a certain type of player or indeed a certain player, their agents would probably sell our club to that player. Also if we are getting in quick, the agent will point out that we will be paying wage which will be better than being unemployed. The player and the agent will both be getting money.

If a club is offering you a 2 year deal You take it especially with the uncertainty hanging around.

Out with the premier league and say Hearts we must be on par as offering better terms that most teams in our league. Central location for travelling.

I would’ve said Dundee could offer more than us but seems more players are jumping ship. Meeting the club captain has left only player that I have seen that’s agreed to stay was McGowan.

I just got sent this from a hibee season ticket holder mate of mine...
Yeah he’s still got the footballing mind but his legs are a bit slower than Premiership pace now. He’ll more than likely do well in the championship though and bring on lads with his experience. I was a bit disappointed Hibs didn’t take more advantage of his experience in a coaching role.

FFS that's the most negative spin on a new signing I've read on here. Are you Berkey in disguise?

You might see a few closet huns popping up to say their piece about Whittaker.
He and Naismith got a fair battering from them for telling them that they had contracts with Rangers FC and that club didn't exist any more so they were allowed to leave.

Eventually he’ll move on and realise there’s more to life than hanging onto my virtual picket lining following me around hoping for a teabag here and there.
