It's bound to be carnage in the English 2nd and 3rd tier.

They were in a dreadful financial state before this all happened.

We know from experience that Administration, painful though it undoubtedly is, need not be the end.

I hope Wigan can pull through. It's not that long ago they were owned by Dave Whelan of JJB Sports. Remember that unbelievable run to avoid relegation one season and the even more incredible FA Cup win the following year.

The football league has confirmed that they will be deducted 12 points(which may be the last of their worries) I understand that the rules were in place but surely given the exceptional circumstances some sort of reprieve could be offered in that regard? I suppose you may then invite legal challenges from the clubs who suffer as a result but next season could start with lots of teams on negative points if they continue to go down that route.

they might well survive this season only due to other clubs around them going into admin! Many teams will be looking at ho they can survive until the end of the season purely to avoid relegation.

wont their last 3 games since coming back to give themselves a fighting chance though

Just sitting here drenched in my own negativity!

To be honest I don't think there should be allowances.

Just like us, they have to take this punishment then seriously rein in costs and expectations, otherwise keeps happening (are you listening Bolton?) And is massively unfair on clubs who paid realistically.

Of course, I suppose if there is a tsunami it might change, but I have a feeling it will be used as an excuse to get rid of crazy debts (Bristol Rovers next?)

Sunderland must be nervous. I can't remember if Ellis Short wiped out the debt when he sold the club or not?

Hopefully they’ll see this out. Listening to whelan I suspect he’s ready to step back in.

A world of foreign investment and reliance on TV cash(and indeed hope of making more TV cash from promotion) is not built to survive hard times. I can see a lot more clubs where owners with no emotional feeling for their clubs refusing to put in previously promised cash and running for the hills, in their absence a shift back to the days of owners being mostly ‘local boy done good’ may well happen.

From the BBC article on Wigan going into administration:
" It is understood there are 600 full and part-time employees at the club"

Shows yet again what an enormous gulf now exists between the finances of clubs in England and Scotland.

Clubs in England, depend on t.v money.I was astonished, when I heard clubs could survive, without crowds, and this was before covid.Think,I would rather be in the scottish situation.

Wage bill increased from 10M to 17.5M, this on average attendance of 10,600.

Appears there have been two transfers of ownership, possibly getting caught in the Hong Kong problems, clearly Corona will 'flush out' clubs such as this, a repeat of the ITV Digital collapse?
