There's no doubt there has been an improvement in the quality of the players recruited this season. Last season a conscious decision was made to sign talented young players with a view to developing them for the transfer market. That has continued with the signing of O'Hara and Wilson but we have supplemented this with the recruitment of players who have experience of playing at the higher level we aspire to.

I would like to see a goalkeeper, left sided midfielder, centre midfielder and another forward added then that should be a balanced squad for the season ahead

Btw I think if the craw and the lads saw something big in nizzy the significance of the singing of kev O'Hara could be massive if the young man turns it on like he can, he does clearly have massive potential

^^ the first three would take the first team squad up to what we finished the season with. anything on top of that would either be a bonus or will need players to go out first.

Assuming the IFAB five-substitute rule is going to apply in the Championship, just like in the Premier, Stevie will be able to name up to nine players on the bench.

That's going to mean that most of the squad (20 players) will be "in play" for him to make adjustments during a game.

It is worth noting that there will be three designated times for substitutions in the match rather than the random system that has existed up to now.

That change should stop the tactical subs in the last two or three minutes which, depending on whether your team is chasing the game or holding on in desperation, can either delight or horrify supporters of either side.

Looking at the player list above, we currently have 23 players. Stevie looks to be targeting a squad of 22 or 24.

We need another goalie, but apart from that, we look pretty well set for the coming season. And it's nice and early; plenty time for the squad to gel.

Other teams in the division will be looking on in envy. There is no doubt about it, we are chasing promotion this year.

I would imagine two or three of the younger players may be put out on loan with a couple of loanees brought in.

The only real downside with loans is that Stevie has a knack of picking out a gem or two and just when they are really contributing to our side they are whisked back to the parent club.

Nevertheless, having a manager with a good eye for talent is a good problem to have.

OZ par you will still be able to use a sub. at any time I presume for injuries. So just need to get say striker to go down pretending injury and get another defender on to hold onto lead in last 5 minutes or so?
