 Messi

The Argentina international, 33, sent a fax to the club on Tuesday saying he wishes to exercise a clause in his contract, allowing him to leave for free with immediate effect.

Barcelona, though, believe the clause has now expired and Messi is contracted to the club until 2021 with a 700m euro buy-out clause.

The board will meet soon and the only thing that could placate Messi is the resignation of the president and early elections.
According to the bbc

Where do yous think he will end up

A legal battle is now set to follow between the club and the player. Messi had a clause in his contract which allowed him to leave for free, if he informed the club of his desire before 10 June.

That date has now passed so Barca believe the clause has expired but Messi and his team feel it should be extended to cover the prolonged season - which ran until August due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Wee bit more details released on the story

"More to the point...who uses a fax these days????"

It wasn't a fax, but a burafax(?) which apparently is basically a letter sent recorded delivery. So the club couldn't say they didn't receive his request.

I think sometimes it also depends on how much you think you'll recoup in merchandising. I might be wrong but I think I read that Juve estimated they were making a fair whack of their expenditure on Ronaldo was (including transfer fee and wages) back in shirt sales.

Man United recorded 3.25m shirt sales (not profit actual shirts) in the first week of re-signing Paul Pogba. That's which would of netted them roughly £30m. Could you imagine the number of shirts city would sell with Messi?!

Surely the most important question is "how much does he run about during a game"?

Pah! Wouldn’t take him as a gift! I mean ...... from what you read his father seems to be heavily involved in promoting him. And haven’t we got a history of crap strikers only getting a game because of their father’s involvement?
