How will we see Pars matches this season?
Topic Originator: Squirrel Dodger
Date:   Mon 14 Sep 10:59

Hi folks, this has no doubt been discussed at length here, and I've missed it, but in one month's time, we'll hopefully be collectively buzzing ahead of the 1st Saturday of the season. But assuming the majority of fans can't attend at the grounds, I'm wondering:

1. Will every Pars' home game be accessible to fans in the UK?
2. Are non-season ticket holders barred (like I think Hibs are doing)?
3. Will UK-based fans of the 'away team' be able pay and view the match?
4. When we're the 'away fans', will we be able to see matches on other teams' streaming services?
5. Are BBC Scotland airing any of Pars' Championship matches live again, this season?
6. Might Sky and/or BT be airing any? What kind of exposure will DAFC get, and their sponsors, advertisers, etc?

Not sure about most of that, but I don't think the Sky deal covers anything lower than the Premiership. I'm sure BBC got all the Championship rights, so it'll be Friday night games. Potential for something on Premier Sports since they've got the Betfred games that BT used to have. Our game with Falkirk on Friday 9th October is on Premier Sports.

Cheers, TTC -- that's great to know about the 9th October (I hadn't realised it would be televised on Premier).

From the digging around the limited information on the Championship online, it all seems pretty up in the air. I found this statement from Ross McArthur, which confirms that only season ticket holders will get to watch the games online:

"In the event that a small number of matches are played behind closed doors at the start of the campaign, all season ticket card holders will be provided with a free, live stream of the match delivered by a new camera system which will be installed in all Championship grounds for the season."

taken from an old post of mine on the 1st August

(from the Dunfermline Press) "comments from Ross McArthur on the subject that there will be PPV access to non season ticket holders and away fans for games at EEP. the pricing will be in line with season ticket prices so it will be what PP mentions above or close to it"

To be strictly accurate, Ross didn't say that ONLY season ticket holders would get to see the matches online.

I would imagine whoever is financing the system will want to have as many paying viewers as possible, so pay-per-view is probable.

I used PPV on Saturday to watch an English League Two match on the EFL system and it was very straightforward.

If Pars are streaming their games online will it be through ParsTV?

If it’s going to be open to all fans and up to £20 a game what assurances are there that the streaming service will stand up to the increase in demand and what testing is being done to ensure as smooth a run as possible?

I just foresee a lot of disgruntled fans paying to see the opening games of the season and it not working efficiently.

Similar to the whole booking system fiasco.

"up to £20 a game"

Is this the likely price? Might be a very hard sell at that cost. I think Motherwell are £12 and maybe a bit more realistic at that price point.

Just going by the comment quoted above about pricing being in line with Season Ticket prices, there’s not that big a saving these days between walk up prices and a season ticket in recent years.

This is ParsTV we are talking about here - how can you say viewers will be disgruntled 🤔😁

Of course there will be more viewers especially season ticket holders. I have a plan to get them online quickly.

We know where issues are when accessing the system so hopefully things will be easier.

Aiming to get testing started soon.

£20 per game is perfectly reasonable when you consider that several people will be viewing together.
Club needs to make money and £20 per family or group of mates sounds very generous to me.
They can't really make it more expensive though as that would be unfair on single viewers.

As a ST holder I'm not affected but £20 seems pricey, TBH, and hammers those used to paying concession rates for admission. I paid £10 to watch an English League Two match on Saturday, it would have been £7 for an overseas viewer.

There will be some folk who gather round a single domestic TV to watch a match, but I don't know what percentage.

Aye but the club will lose a lot of money if there are lots of groups watching on the one TV. Which of course there will be. I suppose the folk who can't afford it will need to chum together and split the cost. I can't imagine many folk watching on their own.

On another note, I recon a lot of people will watch with friends who would not have gone to a match. If we have a good season this could be a good marketing year. Maybe get more bums on seats when/if we get back to normality.

It's a tricky one.

£20 a game would be about twice as much as i'd expect and be willing to pay in all honesty.

"£20 per family or group of mates sounds very generous to me".

With current restrictions around households I don't think they can price it on the basis of "groups of mates" anyway. I read somewhere that £10 was the rate for some teams down in England and seems a lot more closer to the point where more people would start to purchase a game. I get though that they have to be fair to season ticket holders and maybe can't achieve both.

Can you please explain the logic underlying your conclusion, Chris?

Please tell me you don't believe that watching a game on TV is more or less the same as being at the stadium watching it live.

well at the moment no one is watching it live at the stadium and potentially all season, why should non season ticket holders pay nearly £100 less over the season if it was £10 a game?

I wonder if we have complete freedom to charge what we want? Could always charge £20/18 for first game and if take up is really low reduce the price thereafter.

Not a chance in hell I would pay anything like 20 quid to watch it online. Its a farce that it even costs that much to go to the games normally.

My gut reaction would be charge less for season ticket holders but I'm not sure how commercially viable that is based on expected numbers tuning in.

I'm in no way flush with cash but I'm viewing my season ticket as nothing more than a donation to the club. If I get to watch even a minutes live action between now and the end of the season it'll be a bonus

That's fair enough, but charging £20 to watch a 2nd tier Scottish game on TV would be excessive, imo.

Eta, it's not beyond the realms of fantasy to suggest that charging less might lead to a larger income, as more fans would be tempted to subscribe.

I think £20 would be too much; I certainly wouldn’t pay that.

As for my ST (and the wife’s), I understood the situation - pandemic, uncertainty, hope for the best.

We put a great emphasis on being a community club; personally, I think £10 would be closer to that spirit.

Just my tuppenceworth.

We are an honest bunch aren't we?
We want what is best for the future of the club.

Maybe we could have a minimum pay per view of £10 with an honesty option of paying more if we are watching in a group.
I'm sure we would be happy to pay £10 pp or chuck in £5 for concessions.

Well maybe aye, maybe naw!

I received an e-mail from the club this morning which included this reference to streamed matches':-

''Season Ticket holders will receive free access to the live stream of all home Championship matches (excluding live televised matches), and get priority access to matches as soon as fans are allowed back into East End Park.

Details of the streaming service for the season will be announced soon.''

I think that's a great idea. Considering most people watching will be decent 'football' people (away fans included), I think the honesty option would largely be respected. After all, we all want our teams to still be there once this pandemic is done with and we can get back to attending matches in person.
