Absence from the stadium shouldn.t stop you abusing the referee! Today.s official is Willie Collum.

Collum gets a lot of stick - some of it deserved - but we've seen far worse at EEP in recent years.

Not your average Sunday League player.

Only shouted at him once when he gave a 50/50 (imo) free kick to them & when booking Declan after he scored.

Cant say I noticed him otherwise 🤣👍🏼

Proud sponsor of Declan McManus` home shirt

Collum gets a lot of criticism, but over the last decade he.s rarely had a bad game when refereeing Dunfermline. He seems to have a reputation for dishing out a lot of bookings, but whenever he referees outside the top division he.s often the complete opposite to that. Not a difficult game to referee today, but no problems with him at all.

I well remember the absolute nightmare he had when we were away to Falkirk in his first SPL game in 2005, and also remember raging at him for 90 minutes of the Inverness game in December 2006 when he was absolutely stinking. However, when refereeing our games, over the last 10 years I think he.s consistently been the best of them all and I.ve had very little complaint about him.

Scottish refs, in my own opinion, are often pretty dire. but there’s no doubt some must be subjected to the most horrendous abuse.

That said, some deserve it. I can’t think of any other professional sport where the officials exercise so much influence on the outcome of matches - and it appears, to me at least, that a significant proportion of ‘our’ officials frequently choose to indulge in this behaviour to satisfy their own preferences and prejudices.

My own opinion of Willie Collum is that he is one of the most competent refs available in Scottish football. FWIW.

From another perspective, most punters are blissfully ignorant of many of the finer points of ‘the rules of the game’, and most tend to have slightly prejudiced views.

Given the above, it’s not a role I think I could handle personally - man’s gotta know his limitations :)

It should be played beautifully.”

When the Inverness player brought down Dow in the centre circle I was shouting at the telly but apart from that I thought he was spot on.

By the way, what exactly did Declan get booked for? Leaving the field of play? No. Inciting the crowd? No. Approaching the away fans? No. Removing his shirt? No. Putting his shirt temporarily over his head? If so, Willie C you’re an absolute attention-seeking clown. Top official, my a**e.

It’s the rules about pulling your shirt over your head. Nothing to do with collum, his job is only to enforce the rules which others make so he had no choice, as stupid as that rule is.

Maybe, just maybe its fans understanding or more importantly lack of of the laws that are the issue.

Read the below 2-3 time and youll have an immediatley better understadning and appreciation of the game. 4-5 times youll stop watching MOTD and the likles because you struggle to listen to Shearer/Jenas etc all telling you how "im my opinion its not a booking" or "not offside" Sadly these guys maybe have played the games but laws change and the Laws are written centrally for all to adhere to not just pick and chose what to do. Download the IFAB app and gives you game scenarios ect that help enhance understanding of the laws.

This is the kind of rational objectivity that.s killing modern punditry. It has no place in this forum.

From FA website - Law 12 - cautionable offences (relevant extract)

CELEBRATION OF A GOAL

Players can celebrate when a goal is scored, but the celebration must not be excessive. choreographed celebrations are not encouraged and must not cause excessive time-wasting.

Leaving the field of play to celebrate a goal is not a cautionable offence but players should return as soon as possible.

A player must be cautioned, even if the goal is disallowed, for:

climbing onto a perimeter fence and/or approaching the spectators in a manner which can cause safety and/or security issues
gesturing or acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way
covering the head or face with a mask or other similar item
removing the shirt or covering the head with the shirt

Never understood the urge to remove your top or put it over your head when scoring-even more so when there are no fans there and you are playing in Scotland-weird. See players getting booked regularly for it as well. Ravanelli has a lot to answer for .)

Looking at it from the other perspective though, why should a player get booked for lifting the shirt over the head? Makes no sense to me.

I thought he let Ayr away with murder when they were fouling us all over the park, especially in the first half, but we ended up with two yellow cards each. All were justified but they conceded 23 fouls to our 4.

If 24 were recorded as fouls he must have awarded them. They stopped our momentum umpteen times and spread them around so there was no single persistent offender. The only big decision he had to make was when Thomas was brought down on the edge of the box in the first half. The camera position gave us no view but it looked close.
