Yes, sad to hear that. I saw him play several times at Parkhead. That was in the days when foreign players were fairly scarce in Scottish football, most, if not all, being Scandinavian or Icelandic and names like Johannes were too difficult for the Glasgow football supporter to remember or pronounce so they called him Shuggie.

I thought Ian Hall’s testimonial was a bit later than that?

Edvaldson came to Celtic in 1975 when Sean Fallon was acting manager due to the illness of Jock Stein. Celtic had failed to replace Billy McNeill as either a centre half or skipper, and to make matters worse they had lost two classy wing halves in Stevie Murray and George Connelly.
A brutal half back line of Pat McCluskey, Roy Aitken and Edvaldson suddenly emerged to the horror of Celtic fans; one evening at Easter Road they were given a roasting by Hibs’ teenage attack, a game in which Edvaldson blatantly conceded three penalties although the Dunfermline referee Hutton only awarded the one where Shuggie resorted to a rugby tackle.
When Stein returned he brought in classier players like Stanton and Conn to play alongside Dalglish and Edvaldson then showed his power and stamina could be a real asset. He was a bit impetuous as a centre half and didn’t have enough control for midfield, but he made his presence felt on the park and I recall him being a real threat at corner kicks. The Celtic fans appreciated his total commitment to the cause.

Ian Hall died suddenly in September 1978, whilst John Lunn died in 1973.
Was it a testimonial or just a friendly? I was there but I can`t remember!

My bad. 1974. I was only a wee lad too. Probably my first game under the lights. Can remember getting off the train and the public park being busy with people walking up to the game. Funny how things stick in your mind.
