 Pars v Real Zaragoza
Topic Originator: Jbob

Does anyone have recollections of this game back in the early sixties. It was my first evening game and I was but a bairn.
I can remember the celebrations for the goal and also that they had a huge centre half.
What colours did they play in? And indeed the Pars.
I have a memory that Real played in white but that may be nonsense.
Was a great night.

There's a report in the 'Black and White Magic' book. I'll look it out and see if there are pictures.

Trouble with that is that all the pictures are in black and white, auldpar. ☹

I had an idea they played in blue and white, but not 100% sure. I think Alex Smith scored the only goal that night. Why not phone the Coaledge Tavern and ask him, when pubs are allowed to reopen, Jbob?

Not your average Sunday League player.

No pictures. Bert Paton got the late goal (87) and the big centre-half was called Santamaria - he played much of the game with a bandaged head after a clash of heads.

Thanks for sharing, Jbob. As someone who just missed out, I`m always envious of anyone who was fortunate enough to be at these great nights. What fantastic memories to have.

I`d imagine we would have been wearing the red/pink with white candy stripes kit at EEP as we appear to have been wearing our classic white kit in Zaragoza: https://bit.ly/3rGFOEI

My journalistic hero Ian Jack, from North Queensferry, captured the wonder of that glorious era when he wrote of our 1961 Cup win:

"Whenever I watch the video (Dunfermline Athletic: the Golden Years), I`m always surprised to see that the provost on the town hall balcony is wearing a high wing collar, his chains of office around his neck and that most un-Dunfermline-like item, a glass of champagne, is in his hand. He looks like Neville Chamberlain and sounds like Harry Lauder. It is the voice of a small Scottish town in a different century.

"Thinking about it now, I see that my conversion to football had its equivalent in Galilee; it was my first match and I had been witness to a miracle. It was thrilling to discover that I was one of the blessed, the chosen, on account of where I came from."

I always say that as a Pars fan, I was born just too late :-(

Mum was at the `68 final whilst pregnant with me, and I got named after Roy.

Dad was at all the home European games in the 60`s
- he wasn`t allowed to go to the `61 final, but was at `65 & `68

Ah well, I got to go to Gothenburg :-/

I was there but only have the vaguest of memories - mind the very late goal though.

Real Zaragoza had won the ICFC only two seasons previously (63/64)beating Valencia over one game in Barcelona - and they lost the two leg final in this 65/66 season to Barca aet at their own stadium.

Shows the quality of teams the Pars were in amongst

RZ won the 1994/95 ECWC with this goal.

They have played in the Spanish second tier since 2013/14

It's official I'm an idiot.

Saw this goal and thought "I remember David Seaman losing a goal very similar to this"

Went looking to find it only to discover this was the goal. 🤪🤡
