 God’s Heaven XI
Topic Originator: Samzak

On the back of GG Riva’s Best x Cruyff post

They were two of the greatest players I ever had the pleasure of watching, fantastic skills from both of them

Got me thinking that God’s Heaven XI would be one hell of a team

GK. Lev Yashin
RB
CH Socrates
CH Bobby Moore
LB
M Diego Maradona
M. Ferenc Puskas
M Johan Cruyff
W George Best
S Paolo Rossi
S

Will think of more later, but what do you guys think who would make the team

God`s selection must include Ian St. John and Jimmy Gabriel - surely ?

Mark Lazarus on the bench.

You'll get a few arguments with that line up, Samzak, but maybe that's what you're looking for?

Socrates was never a centre half.

What tends to happen in these Great XI threads is that folk put in as many attacking players as they can - even in defence - meaning a good counter attacking team would give them a doing.

Bobby Moore was a fine player by English standards, but he was quite pedestrian and over hyped by the media, even if he is one of a small band of WC winning captains. I remember him being dispossessed by Lubanski in a WC qualifier in Poland which led to a goal for the hosts and subsequent elimination for England.

Eta. Look no further than Italy if you're looking for world class defenders.....

Baresi, Maldini, Gentile, Cabrini, Scirea, Bergomi, Nesta, Cannavaro...... I could go on.

You'd be amazed at how few reds and yellows these guys picked up during their careers, SoP. I think that's partly because they were skilful and pay enough not to normally need to resort to desperate, last ditch fouls, which leave the ref no choice. The record offender in Serie A is Paolo Montero, a Uruguayan and in Spain it's Real's Sergio Ramos. I don't think any of my nominees even make the top 10.

“Beckenbauer in for Socrates”

He’d be a vast improvement on Socrates as a defender, only problem might be that der Kaiser is still happily alive. His enlistment in Heaven’s first XI will have to wait a bit.

Oh my bad. I hadn't twigged that you have to be deid to get a game for the Nuno Espirito Santo's alter ego. That's my 8 Italian defenders list whittled down to 1 - Gaetano Scirea who was killed in a RTA aged just 36.

Was that not one of his last England games GG? Seen a documentary on Moore recently, never knew he had cancer.
