I agree Lorna. We really have to pull out all the stops and come away with three points today. A win and we are clear in second place, and no one has games in hand on us any more. We are currently in control of our own destiny, so the last thing we need is another slip up. COYP!!!

My guess at starting line up

OFW,

Comrie, Murray, Watson, Whittaker

Murray, Turner, Wilson, Thomas,

Wighton, McManus

Gill, MacDonald, McCann, Gaspuitis, O’Hara, Banks, Todd

Or go 3 at the back and play Gaspuitis

Noo there’s an idea fcda!

She’d love a HT shout - I’ll just give Burty a wee nudge 😂

Bumped into the legend Roy Barry in Aldi’s. Reminiscing about the big hoose and how much we long to get back there.

Mon the Paaaaaaars!

Great finish. Before the goal I was a bit concerned at where the next goal would come from as we are badly struggling to put the ball in the net at the moment.

Hopefully we can play a lot better in the second half and not waste possession. Today`s game is one of those MUST wins in my eyes. We really need to take advantage of Raith drawing and hopefully Alloa can take advantage of 10 men.

`Shhhh away sit in the corner for saying that!! 😅`

😂 Fair enough!

Some save by the Morton keeper there after we have looked a bit sloppy the last 5 mins. Overall, we`ve been much better this half.

Could have done with the penalty being converted especially as I think goal difference is going to play a part in play off places.
Good win. 3 much needed points and a wee boost to the players reclaiming 2nd spot.

Best performance I've see Banks put in.

We will always struggle against teams that play defensively against us, as we are just not that great at breaking teams down. Today we flooded the midfield and it worked, but without creating too many chances.
When we play better teams like Hearts and Rovers we definitely create more chances as they open up against us.

A typical championship match with two typical championship teams with one being marginally better than the other. This genuinely is one league with Hearts, then us and the rest, with fag papers between all the teams on quality.

A very good win for us.

Good solid win today. Good organised defence and kept Morton’ chances to a minimum. Williams definitely the quieter of the two keepers. 1-0 should have been more, need to get a couple of recognised penalty takers.

I found that to be a really poor game and I did not enjoy it at all. Normally I like to go into both the good and bad points after a game but today, pretty much every point I can think of, other than the goal and the final score, is something that annoyed me so I`m not going to bother.

We didn`t play at all well and made mistakes all over the pitch, which makes it an absolutely brilliant win. The description of the goal as something that Nicky Clark would have scored is absolutely bang-on. Good work before the ball comes in to get the space and then an unspectacular but perfectly effective finish. The ball in from Thomas was great - not an easy thing to put an accurate cross in from relatively short distance like that.

So, how do we all feel? Elated? Nah, more likely relieved! Three points is three points at the end of the day though and, in this highly competitive league, a massive boost. (QOS will no doubt confirm that after being turned over by relegation certs, Alloa!)
You do hope that Wighton’s goal will get the monkey off the team’s back and that we will grow in confidence and gain momentum as a result.
BUT - there’s always a but, isn’t there? - we’re far from the finished product. As I see it we’ve got some talented players but we’re not playing as a team. I’m sure I’m not the only one who, in the first quarter, was on the edge of my seat staring incredulously as AFW and various defenders played Russian roulette tippy tappy with ‘Ton players bearing down on them. WTF was that all about? And it nearly cost us dearly.
And how often do we get the ball up to the midfield, whereupon everyone stops, the ball gets played across field (sometimes to an opponent) or backwards ..... and all momentum is lost?
Up front we now have options at least. Thought Banks looked very promising and will grow into his role. I still think Wighton has more to offer - particularly once he’s practised taking penalties 🙄 - and giving McManus a wee rest is probably no bad thing.
By the way, thought Gaspuitis’ contribution - clearing the ball into Row ZZ - was epic: the boy’s definitely got a defender’s brain.

Socks, spot on . We couldn`t retain possession and couldnt string more than two passes together. It was a poor performance and dismal to watch. I dont think their keeper had a save to make in the second half. Given we are at home I dont think its too much to ask to create a few chances when we are attacking the Norrie end.

Poor performance again - how on earth did Fraser Murray play the whole game?

Wighton looks like a decent player to me but looks like he’s not interested in high balls lumped up to him which seems to our only tactic.

I know it’s a different sport but I’m watching France v England at the moment - great game with both teams playing with real pace and enterprise - our midfield is so slow and negative it’s unbelievable.

Fantastic 3 points though - and defensively very strong.

We actually had 5 shots on target to their 1 and I recall one amazing stramash in the second half when somehow Morton kept us out. They shaded possession but we were the more dangerous team. At this stage of the season results are more important than performances.

I suggest you watch Wilson’s passing carefully . At least 80% of his passes are backwards or sideways , there are very few incisive forward passes from him. I cant believe Crawford doesnt see this but maybe he does and doesnt actually hold too much sway in attacking football.

Some critical comments but let’s not forget our team have not been able to train together for 10 days since the Covid outbreak.
I was quite content with our show under these circumstances.
Banks was MOM for me. Looked very hungry and got into dangerous areas.

It wasn’t a bad performance though. Not great to watch but we looked way more dangerous than Morton and looking at results elsewhere the past two weeks , we are sitting nicely for a playoff spot and a very decent shot at 2nd.
Games v Rovers and Dundee are our six pointers now.

A wins a win.... next 2 games are crucial we get points and hopefully the win today gives the team a bit more confidence.
Again I would say Turner needs to start the next game. We need a positive midfielder going forward. I like Wilson but he is more of a holding midfielder.

Wilson’s breaking up of the oppositions attack and doing the dirty work was impressive, dare I say Gary Mason type role. Only miss it when it is missing out the team. Ran Banks all the way to MOTM imo

Thats all good and well but I am assuming he ( and not Whittaker) is given the role of creative attacking CM. And we create very little and at snails pace. I want to see quick incisive forward attacking passing as opposed to laboured , pedestrian pass the ball back , give opposition defence time to re- group approach.

Hard work and not a great performance but a massive 3 points which is really all that matters at this point in the season. We made life hard for ourselves with the penalty but I never really thought 3 points were in doubt. Big win especially given the last fortnight and the players missing as a result.

Not surprised that this thread has a few comments from ‘fans’ who seem disappointed we won.

It wasn`t that pretty but we deserved the win. Given that we hadn`t played for a while and with Covid complications, can`t be too critical.

Whittaker was much better today, Banks came on to a game and Thomas is returning to life. McDonald also did well against Morton`s only decent player.

Plenty to work on though, another poor penalty which could have cost us. I am not sure why either Wighton or McManus don`t jump and contest the ball in the air...I appreciate they may prefer balls into feet or in behind but backing into the defender all the time regardless of the height of the ball is not effective. Wilson is another big lad that barely gets off the ground to contest the ball in the air, also too many slow backwards passes from him today. If he`s playing alongside Whittaker we need him to be moving us forward.

Hopefully we can follow it up next weekend.

Their central defenders were big strong lads and pushed into our central strikers, giving them little chance to hold the ball up or jump to try and head it. But being strong and standing their ground would be much better than falling forward and looking for a free kick which was never going to be given. This is something that has to be worked on by our coaches in training.

I noticed this too. I felt that their defenders were continually ploughing through our guys who were trying to receive the ball with back to goal and the ref allowed it. That said, I felt we were physically outmuscled time and again around their box. Definitely something to work on.

Love how we get a win 2nd in the table and folk still aren't satisfied. If you want to see your team win most weeks and play brilliant football then go and watch a bayern Munich type because those days are not going to be at eep any time soon. A good win today and 2nd with games in hand what else can your expect. Wilson has been one of our better performers this season anyone that can't see that must be watching a different game. We won be happy for a change.

^^Agree. 2nd and still fighting, would have snapped that up at start of season. So many keyboard warriors who think we should be world beaters need to get real

Wins are what matter at this stage. Its a case of keeping focus and working hard to get results over the next 3 to 4 games

“Wilson’s breaking up of the oppositions attack and doing the dirty work was impressive, dare I say Gary Mason type role. Only miss it when it is missing out the team. Ran Banks all the way to MOTM imo”

You need to go watch Barca then. Not going to see incisive at championship level, got to use the tools we have.

I feel the gap between midfield and upfront as to far in the middle, if like what happened that the goalie kicks were central we lost the second ball due to the midfield being to deep.

Its all well having a narrow midfield with the wingers tucking in but if you control the middle off the park, you control the game.

Only experience I have was being a central midfielder and if we bossed that we left the other players to do their part. If one midfielder pushed up the other sat.

For me we haven't bossed a midfield since being in division 1.

Its the old story. Started like a train but not reached the same heights in terms of performance for the last 3 months.
If we'd done a QOS and started cr@p and steadily improved to climb the table some would be happier.

I personally think closed doors football is having a massive effect on the quality. Fans can elevate a decent game into a great one and an average one into a compelling one. It's all flat and absolutely ludicrous to be drawing comparisons with elite level sport, as I've seen in the past few weeks.

Added to that, the players are humans too. Everyone is jaded right now and it's bound to have an effect.

I can't really engage with watching the games live either so I probably benefit from a bit of a distance from it all.

We're second in a league that includes Hearts, Dundee, Caley and Raith. We're financially stable in the most uncertain time in modern history. That'll do me.

It`s a fair point about the game suffering without fans in the ground, and that applies both in terms of the actual football and how it is perceived by fans. I`ve found it a a difficult season all round - I`ve had no real enthusiasm for watching internet streams from empty grounds but my Dad is dead keen to see every game, mainly as he`s not able to do all his normal stuff, so I`ve ended up seeing almost all of them.

We all know that the football is rarely great, but even a poor game can feel interesting when you`re in the ground. I can look at tactical systems, decide whether the offside calls at my end of the park are right or not, and shout `aw **** off ref` when I think a decision has wrongly gone against us, among a load of other things.

This year has just felt utterly devoid of genuine emotion, and as someone who collects memories by the emotions and feelings experienced, that`s made watching football quite a difficult experience. Had I been at the game yesterday, I`m pretty sure I`d still have come away thinking it was a poor game, but I`d have been there with the team for the last 10 nervous minutes and would have been there to clap them off the park having held out for a good win. I`d have felt involved, and that however crap the game had been, I`d have been there to see my team win.

I miss all of that and I miss it hugely. I want to be a football fan again.
