R I P Peter Lorimer.

He had one of the hardest shots in the league.

Hadn`t realised he is Leeds United all time top scorer. That`s some Leeds team being assembled "up there".

The first game my dad took me to after we came to Glasgow from Cowdenbeath was Scotland versus England schoolboys at Ibrox and Peter Lorimer was the star man in a Scotland victory. Great player. I saw him score at Hampden against England in the seventies.

Peter Lorimer was one of these players who gave the impression that he was still playing the game the same way he had as a schoolboy. He had mastered the skill of striking a football dead centre so that even when his shots flew through the air at around 80 mph the ball itself never deviated in flight. Lorimer’s technique was so sound that he never seemed to slice or ‘skin’ the ball and when within 30 yards of goal he could be lethal. Once almost literally lethal, when a trademark volley pole axed Tony Hateley of Liverpool, knocking him unconscious for some time.

Lorimer had been identified as a special talent at schoolboy level and it is believed his parents handed back £5,000 (over £100,000 in today’s money) they had been given for his signature by Manchester United. What was in Don Revie’s envelope is unknown but the manager was confident enough to play Lorimer as a 16 year old in the first team before deciding to bed him in more slowly. He started as a right winger well able to throw a full back off balance for Lorimer was a decent dribbler and possessed a real turn of pace. That pace and shooting power was often used in central attacks and a Lorimer finish rarely contained more than two touches: one to control, the second to bury the ball into the corner of the net. He managed this over 200 times in his career.

His international appearances were sporadic, Scotland remaining wedded to the idea of a small, tricky winger, but he will be remembered for his contribution to the 1974 World Cup side, in particular a volley against Zaire and some typical efforts against Brazil. Leeds never won the hearts of the wider public but Lorimer had the crowd rising from their seats when he lined up a shot for goal. A good life it seems and he always seemed happy to talk about his football career in that Dundee/Yorkshire accent.

Likewise wetherby, I had no idea that he was their “all time” top scorer - a distinguished status in such a successful team as the Leeds United of that era!

Was lucky enough to see him play for Scotland in our best ever team ... the 1974 Word Cup side. How blessed we were.

Classy player with a vicious shot - from an opposition supporter's point of view he was about the only one of Revie's cynical Leeds team that I had any time for.
RIP
