Ex-Leicester and England striker has died aged 72. Frank was a bit of a one-off in his day.

Could have been described as a "character"? Certainly, didn`t lack for confidence.

Scored some crackers in his time

RIP

He was a very skilful centre forward who could play back to goal and pluck the ball out of the air with his left foot. Like his fellow mavericks from 1970s – Charlie George and Stan Bowles- Worthington’s England career never took off but whether that was due to lack of application or an unsuitable playing system is open to debate. Alf Ramsey, Joe Mercer and Don Revie all chose him during a short spell.

I think Worthington was happy to play up to his playboy image but he was still playing well into his 40s albeit at a much lower level. The game I remember him best for was a 2-2 draw at Wembley with Argentina when he looked similar in style to a player then new to me- Mario Kempes. They both scored that night but Kempes went on to become a World Cup legend while Frank was plying his wares at Bolton and Birmingham.

RIP Frank, I still remember one of the commentators, after watching you score, shouting out, "Worthington for England".

Frank played football in glorious Technicolor while most of his contemporaries played in monochrome, like the girl in the red coat in that black and white advert.

Gone far too soon. Will be an automatic starter for England in any celestial WC tournament. 🙂

RIP Frank and thanks for the memories.

Remember him being gobsmacked at Hampden, playing Scotland, when he saw the support and hate coming from the slopes, he never kicked a ball that day!

I`ve just read his obituary and had forgotten that his transfer from Huddersfield to Liverpool in 1972 fell through when he failed the medical due to `high blood pressure`. Liverpool`s loss was Leicester`s gain.

One of Frank`s: former managers, the late Ian Greaves, as quoted in the Guardian, describing an attempt to give Frank Worthington a rollocking during their time at Huddersfield.

“We stood there, looking at each other, eye to eye. He was talking to me and his eyes never left mine, but he must have flicked the ball up 47 times. He flicked it up and caught it behind him on his neck, down the back of his neck, hoofed it over his back and caught it on his foot, something I could never do if I played forever. I thought, ‘How do you give him a telling-off when he’s doing that?’

Sad news, Frank was definitely a character and a genius on the field.
