I can’t just say a striker alone as my favourites relied on a great winger.
Jim Bowie gave John Watson so many goals it was unreal and I’d say the same with Andy Smith and Stuart Petrie.
Petrie had no pace but he could simply sidestep a defender and place a perfect ball for Andy to finish.

Alex Ferguson, no doubt about that. He was special. Sadly, I never saw Charlie D play for the Pars.

Other standouts over the years that immediately come to mind would be Ken Mackie, Sandy McNaughton, Mick Leonard, Ross Jack, John Watson, Andy Smith, Stevie Crawford.

But Sir Alex was the most lethal striker of them all.

Charlie D, Watson and Andy Smith were all able to unsettle defences in their different styles. Melrose and Crawford started as direct wingers then developed into hard working, all round forwards. Paton and Brewster were thinking strikers, easy on the eye, who had a knack for unlocking defences.

They all scored goals obviously but the sharpest I have seen around the 6 yard box were Fergie and Jackie Sinclair. The good news is that O’Hara seems to have that same instinct but of course he needs the service.

Good to hear O`Hara getting some credit. Andy Kirk was another `fox in the box`.

It's a shame Jack De Gier wanted to return to the Netherlands so quickly as he might have gone on to be a shoe in for a list like this if he'd stuck around.

Certainly seemed a decent penalty box striker.

"They all scored goals obviously but the sharpest I have seen around the 6 yard box were Fergie and Jackie Sinclair."

Outside the penalty area Fergie was an average player - but inside he was a "mechanic" who could convert half chances.

Fergie was undoubtedly the deadliest striker, unfortunately I still remember the sitter he missed against St Johnstone that cost us the league and possibly the cup too!

A win v St.Johnstone would not have guaranteed the title.

Perhaps not guaranteed but it certainly felt like it and it`s the closest we have ever come. Fergie was/is a hero of mine but it was a terrible miss. So unlike him. That goes in, momentum takes us to league and cup double. If only.

If we`d beaten Saints 2-1 the previous Saturday at EEP, here is how the league table would have stood at 3pm on Sat.24th April 1965.

Played / Won / Drawn / Lost / Goals For / Goals Against / Points

Hearts : 33 / 21 / 6 / 6 / 90 / 47 / 50
Dunfermline : 33 / 22 / 4 / 7 / 79 / 36 / 48
Kilmarnock : 33 / 21 / 6 / 6 / 60 / 33 / 48

A win or draw for Hearts - and they were champions.

So, to suggest that Fergie cost us the league is grossly simplistic and misleading.

Look at the goal difference, that was probably the most exciting Pars team ever. Veteran can you tell me...my first ever Pars game that I remember was Pars 5 Hibs 6 at East End was that the same season?

It was 1966/67 so two seasons after the season we were third, which was 1964/65.

Yes, `66/67 - incidentally goal difference was not applicable in `64/65, it was goal average.

So, based on the fictitious league table example above, Hearts and DA were each + 43 on GD - but Hearts were inferior on 1.91, compared to the Pars on 2.19 using GA.

All academic of course.
