If we play with Declan as a 10/centre midfield I'll be half tempted to not buy the stream.

I’m no fan of this line up, having one holding midfielder and then a load of strikers/wingers is nuts in my view. However, it’s nuts out tonight, we’re going to have to pump them tonight given out away form.

4 nil Pars 😳

thing is most people on here think it's just a case of having more strikers or wingers on the park and we will score goals and they are the 1st to moan about how open the midfield is when we loose the ball!

2 or 3 formations with that line up we can play and suspect may see during tonight's 90mins on how the game pans out

That's a dreadful lineup, we got absolutely schooled by Raith in midfield last time, and we've went for that? I can only imagine we're hoping McManus will run around allot and man mark Hendry, however we're then still a man short in midfield.

Wilson will be a big miss, I think that is the last 6 games he has missed. Our central midfield options are very limited.

None, bring on either banks or mcinroy and push McManus up. McCann is a man short and should not be near our squad after 3 dozen chances and produced next to nothing

I don't think that STV have any interest in any Fife football. The sent a team up to Brora so that they could speak to Barry Fergus on, then they gave some time to the Brora manager. They STV are almost as bad as the Weeggie TV on the other channel.

depends if go diamond in midfield to match up with them, or gave 2 sitting which would mean Whittaker and Henderson.

Space against this rovers line up is down the side of the centre halfs when the full backs bomb forward. Let's hope to exploit that space.

One of the great things about sport is how unpredictable it is. Come on Dunfermline, give us one of those nights from nowhere. A four nil pumping.

That line up gives me the fear but you never know. Young Henderson has been finding his feet. O Hara finding the goal. Wighton two excellent finishes against Arbroath. Come on Pars.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be too disappointed if we drew tonight and then we knew we had to win at Starks on Saturday.

Winning tonight 2-0 and then watching us inevitably sit back and try and defend it could turn into a disaster and gives me the shivers!

I very much agree with you, the wee circle in the middle every couple of minutes is driving me mad here! Not even 15 minutes in and I’m ready to call it a day. I’m getting the game free as a season ticket holder but not great if you’ve shelled out for this.

Really good performance so far. Rovers are playing like we normally play: slow passing at the back followed by hoofing it up to no one and it is because our midfield have controlled the game really well, particularly Whittaker.
The missed chances have been frustrating but on the plus side Henderson and O’hara are linking up really nicely. We need to hope more of the same in the second half and to take some chances!

Yes, we really need to take our chances. Let`s hope we don`t rue those that went begging in the first half by allowing Rovers a sucker punch. Rovers haven`t looked too threatening, but they have Duku and Ugwe waiting on the bench and that gives me the shivers.

On the positives though, we have played very well, pressing high and winning most of the battles that mattered in midfield. Whitaker has been a standout. Shame he got a booking as he`ll probably need to be substituted by Mayo at some point to avoid a send-off late on.

We`ve had several chances that should have been better handled. Wighton has had a couple, and McManus should have scored when an opportunity presented itself. O`Hara and Henderson, who has played really well so far, both drew out great saves from McDonald.

Overall, a pleasing performance so far. Rovers only really threatened in the first five minutes. But we need at least a two-goal cushion to take to Starks Park.

COYP!!!

This could be a blessing in disguise as if we went 1-0 up early then usually we play defensive for the rest of the game.... I’ll take 1-0 after 85mins! Only leaves 5 mins for the usual defensive game😅

Not really a surprise - every player is well up for the game. It's a local derby and effectively a 2 leg cup tie.

Not a bad result, should’ve won but players will take a lot of positives out of that.

Knowing we need to win as well I would say is better for us, as sitting back and defending a lead isn’t something we’re exactly great at.

Players will be determined to right that wrong with the battering we took at Starks as well.

Still in this.

Great performance from the Pars tonight….but we should have scored a couple at least.

Henderson rightly mom.

The much maligned Kevin O’Hara was excellent tonight, should have scored late on though.

Thomas..disappointing

Wighton…absolute mare of a game.

Still in it though and no reason why we can’t Nick it through there..

Better chances but just couldn`t finish. There were a few times we took one too many touches and lost the ball in the end. Henderson makes a massive difference and linked well with O`Hara. Disappointed we didn`t win but we have to go to Starks now and not have a repeat of the last time.

Henderson was fantastic all game. O’Hara was great too, frequently has a poor touch but tonight I don’t think he miscontrolled anything and what a difference it made. Whittaker also really solid in midfield.
Still not convinced at all about McManus playing deeper and Wighton just had one of those days unfortunately.

Still in this of course but with our away record it would have been a lot nicer to capitalise on the performance today. If Henderson and Whittaker play on Saturday like they did in this match, however, then we will have a great chance.

Rovers will be delighted with a 0-0 draw.

No question it’s advantage Rovers at the moment given they have dominated both games at Starks Park despite the earlier draw.
I know we can defend well but to go into the second leg without an advantage isn’t good they way they spread the ball around at home.
We had enough chances to win comfortably tonight but sadly our final touch was just not there.

S-o-o-o frustrating. How many chances did we have? Nerves obviously playing a part resulting in snatched finishing. That was a good account of ourselves though. Henderson definitely MOM again but O’Hara put in a brilliant shift - showed great speed and skill down the left but was also popping up in plenty of other places. McManus’s role still a mystery to me. Still feel that we’re losing out in midfield. Wouldn’t say that Wighton had “a ‘mare” in any way; had some lovely touches but things just didn’t come off for him. Defensively we were pretty immense, but OFW’s reluctance to come out still gives me the heebies. Whittaker and Watson both very solid. Didn’t feel that the substitutions contributed much other than provide fresh legs. Overall though a really excellent shift. All to play for on Saturday and at this stage I wouldn’t like to call it.

Huge credit to us for the performance but I think Raith got exactly what they came for. In the first 5 minutes they were playing possession football in their own half and running the clock down at every opportunity. Clever tactics but the ref should’ve been more aware of what they were doing with the diving and time wasting. He did spot a couple of dives but took no action and to only play 2 minutes additional time at the end was puzzling after a couple of stoppages and several substitutions.

Apart from the finishing that was one of our best performances of the season - very strong defensively (and defended really well from the front as well) - Whittaker was fab for the first hour, O’Hara great apart from his miss at the end, and Henderson man of the match. Thought Wighton was ok as well - things just didn’t quite come off for him.

Play like that on Saturday and we’ll be fine.

Pity we could not take at least one of our chances, but that performance will give the team loads of confidence for the next leg. Raith will be a bit more dangerous at Starks, however I think if we can keep same levels up we'll take them on Saturday. Really good game tonight, certainly the best we`ve been involved in for some time. We played well in the first half, second half more even but we still had the better chances and we`re a bit unlukcy not to have a lead. The defensive effort was there from the whole team tonight and while the points above about Henderson not being the best defensively are true, he still made the effort to cover when needed. Some really good covering on the other side from Thomas, not something I`ve said too often recently.

That chance at the end was a sore one as it looked exactly the kind of chance Kevin O`Hara has been consistently scoring from in the last few months. Sadly, it was just one of those games when it just didn`t run for us and we weren`t able to put the chances away. Wouldn`t be surprised at all if Saturday`s game is utterly turgid and we sneak it 1-0 with a goal out of nothing in a game where nobody looks like scoring.

Although it`s a bit frustrating not to have scored tonight, I`m content that we played well and competed properly. That`s the first time since we beat the Rovers 4-1 that I`ve genuinely thought we played well in a game so there has to be some hope that we can beat them at Stark`s Park.

thats the story for the majority of the season but also you sometimes need a bit of luck, a break of the ball, a howler from the opposition etc, we didnt get it tonight but maybe we will on Saturday.

Looked like a 4-1-3-2 formation tonight?
Putting Henderson in centrally would actually give him more cover with Whitaker and the two centre backs directly behind him

I think Henderson is more effective out wide personally. He’s not an effective ball winner but what he does do is deliver quality crosses as well as an understanding with Wighton.
At Starks we need real grafters in the middle of the park to stop their midfield overrunning ours as they did the last time.

The Rovers will feel they've done the hard bit, which may work out in our favour. Their manager will no doubt be drumming into his players to guard against complacency, but human nature being what it is, there'll be a feeling that with home advantage, the job is almost done.

None of us will easily forget the horror and the pain of that play off final v Cowdenbeath after we'd secured a draw at Central Park in the first leg. Football has a habit of kicking you in the nether regions when you least expect it. Let's hope the Raith players learn that lesson on Saturday.

Wouldn't move Henderson centrally unless your dropping one of the strikers, he's not defensively adapt enough to play in a midfield two currently. While McManus was pretty poor on the ball he was absolutely vital for the press.

I wouldn't change anything about what Henderson does, he was brilliant last night.

Hopefully in the next game Rovers will push out a bit and leave more space for him and Thomas.

It's a shame the second leg is on their plastic pitch as it will be an advantage to them.

Yes, McManus is the big question still for the second leg, I thought he did better tonight but he`s not well suited to that role.

Henderson as a number 10? Yes I think that`s his best position, with the 4-1-3-2 that we`ve been playing for a weeks maybe there is enough balance in midfield with him there and Banks and Thomas wide...

Alternatively Craw could put McInroy alongside Whittaker, would make us a bit more competitive in the middle and maybe give a little more license to both wide players to really push forward. Both McInroy and Whittaker can get forward as well - both have threatened to score in recent games.

That said, I reckon he`ll go with the same starting XI. The first goal is always crucial but I think especially so having had the better off the first leg and not gone ahead. Hopefully Fraser Murray might be back as an option off the bench, I don`t think we will be seeing Wilson sadly.

Surely can`t be that much of an advantage given we train on an artificial pitch these days?

we have trained on astro from around October onwards for a good few years now.

As for the advantage point....each astro will play differently, the leveller going by the early forecast for the weekend could be the weather, heavy rain and high winds. Could turn the game more into a battle than already will be.

I know our away form in the league has been woeful but Rovers aren`t exactly invincible at home. Of their 13 home league games they`ve won 6, drawn 3 and lost 4 (twice to Hearts and once each to QOS and ICT). In 14 away games they won 6, drew 4 and lost 4 so picked up one point more away than at home, admittedly having played one more away game.

It`s all to play for.

Happy with 0-0. Had we scored late on and won 1 -0 we`d have done the inevitable on saturday and sat back defending our lead. Subconsciously players will do that regardless of how many times the manager tells them not to. On the flip side Raith would have had nothing to lose and that puts them on the front foot. Now we have 90 minutes, winner takes all, and I think that`s a better situation mentally than having 1 foot in the next round.

Pretty much what I would have said in response. Lots of variation in plastic.

A really good team performance last night but I lost count of the number of times McManus passed the ball straight back to the opposition. He's simply not a central midfielder.

Like the thinking behind it but I can’t help thinking we could’ve been 3 or 4 up after last night.

Always home advantage in terms of pitches but not sure if astro makes it more of an advantage. With our pitch there is less predictability. Our players will know that a certain corner is wetter when it rains or that it slopes slightly etc whereas a plastic pitch should be much more predictable. The only real benefit would be knowing which boots suit you best on that particular pitch.

Shouldn't be but struggling for reasons astro benefits the home side. Not sure if any research has been done to compare home Vs away results for clubs with astro.

A quick look at detailed tables for this covid affected season-

Home Results Table -

Raith - 4th
QOTS - 9th
Alloa - 10th

Doesn`t suggest that playing on your own " astro" was any benefit.

Raith sit 1st in the Away table, two teams ICT and QOTS actually have better records Away from their home grounds, but again this is an unusual season.

Ian Davidson won his appeal against the red card he was shown against Hearts so he will be able to play on Saturday.

Livingston went up in 2018 and they won 1 away game all season in their first season v St Mirren(August 2018) and in their second season only won 2 v Ross County(August 2019) and v Hamilton(January 2020) yet were comfortably mid table each time.

Overall definitely an advantage to the team most accustomed to it. Different game on the astro. I remember having a look the season that Steve Clarke did well with Killie and despite them and Livi being near the top those 2 grounds were averaging the least goals per game out of all stadiums. They were also the 2 teams who`s results contrasted most between home and away and at the time the 2 teams who I felt were punching above their weight. Could all have been a coincidence but I remember thinking at the time that it`s a big advantage.

I can just about remember the likes of Oldham and Luton having plastic pitches back in the English top league back in the 80s and those clubs had a dramatic upturn in fortunes and look where they have ended up subsequently. Of course, artificial pitches have come on considerably since then.

Astro fine for training on etc but has no place in the professional game imo although I get why teams do it, not good for player welfare though.

I found this article and a few others on the subject of whether it`s an advantage or not earlier.

One positive, if you can call it that, is that our only 2 wins away in the league since 2019 have come on the astro.(vQOTS in Feb20 and Alloa in October)

Cheers Eck hadn't seen that although it was to be expected as it was a terrible decision.

Henderson's preferred position is as a number 10.

That's also where he was playing for his two assists against Arbroath.

I'd play him there instead of McManus.

he was on the left for the two assists, not as a number 10 and McManus isnt playing as a number 10 either. there is no need to move Henderson from that left side.

Raith on astro this season

on grass
p14 w4 d5 l5 f12 a16

2 of those 4 away wins were at Cowdenbeath and Stirling in the cup.
