On paper Man U look too strong for Villarreal , but Unai Emery has won this trophy 3 times and may just have enough .

I have a feeling that the pressure to win a trophy plus all the anniversary/Fergie/birthday nonsense will be too much for Man U to cope with ... hope I`m wrong tho .... Towk has not slept since Friday :-))

1-0 Villarreal

Paul Pogba surely must be the most overrated player in world football. He's played a number of poor passes and taken a few awful touches tonight.

To be fair Villarreal have fought a rearguard action ,not sure they are actively trying to win this .

McTominay has been their best player.
Rashford has been poor.

Looking at the Utd bench. Not a lot there

Keepers normally have nothing to lose in a shoot-out - unless they let in 11 penalties out of 11 and then miss the vital shot themselves.

Not that I care, but maybe should have subbed on Henderson?

How did villareal win on penalties 11-10?

If villa were taking the first penalty, their keeper should have scored their winner?

He did. It just wasn`t the winner until he saved De Gea`s penalty.

As soon as I saw De Gea walking up I knew he was going to miss.

Far too casual looking, to be honest there were a couple of goal kicks/ passes he played across the face of his own goal only a couple 3 yards out that made me wince....

Well we have definitely witnessed a worse goal keeping performance in shootouts now than what Fonners did last season for us lol

De Gea looked like an outfield player who was thrown in goals for the pens!!

The standard of penalties were tremendous. If anything it was the Villareal keeper who should have done better but saved the one that counted.

I don’t understand why keepers dive at the penalties. How many would have been saved if standing up ?

Spot on. I think De Gea would have saved 3 by standing still.

I see Rashford has said he's had at least 70 racial hate messages on social media since last night's game.

It was obviously all his fault United lost on pens. Some people are truly sick in the head.

I only recall one going down the middle. That was fairly late on so if he had just been standing there for every previous penalty I'm pretty sure the guy wouldn't have hit it down the middle.

Just checked, 6th penalty went down the middle. 8th was more central but was not down the middle but maybe a third of the way across the goal.

Many, many moons ago i had a coaching class for GK as a wee boy and Chris Woods did a session on penalties.

I've never heard anyone mention it before or since - granted you are talking fractions of a second in terms of reaction times - but he said you can try and gauge where it's going based on where the opposing player plants their standing foot with where their toes are pointing.

Obviously easier said than done but always stuck in my head 30 odd years later and something i still look out for when you see a shootout on TV.

Hindsight’s a great thing but Solskjaer made 2 last minute subs with penalties in mind but may be not the correct ones - I believe that’s now 32 penalties in a row scored against De Gea - Dean Henderson has saved 8 of the last 17 he’s faced.

The difference in penalties from the GK i think was telling to be honest. The Villarreal keeper kicked it as if he was bashing out a goal kick, whack it, on target and if keeper saves then fair play. Stuck to his roots.

De Gea tried to place it and made it obvious where he was going and the way he hit it made it an easy save.

On the subs, OGS made the right ones in my view he brought on Telles and Mata and both scored.

It takes a brave manager to sub De Gea going into a penalty shootout, can imagine the uproar after even if they had won that shootout.

A goalie should stand up on occasions. It would make future penalty takers think twice about going down the middle against that keeper
