A very astute choice if true. A really clever football manager.

From Aunty :-

Ange Postecoglou has been appointed as Celtic`s new manager on a 12-month rolling contract.

The 55-year-old replaces Neil Lennon, who resigned in February as the club failed in a bid to win a record 10th consecutive Scottish Premiership title.

The former Australia boss joins from Yokohama F Marinos in Japan.

"The opportunity that has been given to me is one of the greatest honours in football," said Greece-born Postecoglou.

"The responsibility to lead our magnificent football club into the future is one that I will cherish dearly."

You all may laugh, but believe me, you are in for a major surprise. Ange will probably sack half the team and antagonise the Scottish media, but he will get Celtic playing great attacking football within a very short time. He is a class act.

As an Aussie Scot, I am delighted that he has broken through into European management. He will go much further than Celtic.

Never Heard of the guy in all honesty, if he had gone to any club outside the bigot bros I would wish him all the best. If he is half as good as you think Oz, rather than wish him all the best I'll just enjoy his football

How disgracefully slanted is the BBC report?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56634729

Boot the guy in the crown jewels before he even sets foot in the managers office, why don't you?

I've a hunch he'll be a better appointment than Eddie Howe, who might have become homesick for the South coast by Christmas.

They've certainly got a better manager in place than they did at the start of last season.

Let's be honest, the expectation of Celtic fans is going to be ridiculous. A realistic Celtic fan would accept that next season they'll likely finish second. Maybe the season after that too. The key thing should be thst they see a consistent improvement.

I agree with Ozpar that Postecoglou will make his mark at Celtic. He is a grumpy man when it comes to football. I am confident that he will be able to handle the media as he did in Australia. He is his own man and will certainly be newsworthy. All his teams have played attractive football, especially when he managed Brisbane Roar.
I couldn`t care less if Rangers or Celtic do well, but there is definitely a lot more to Celtic now than there was last season.

The guy has a lot of experience on the other side of the world and looks like a manager that will get the best out of his team playing attacking football….only problem is he’s in a minefield of football now and he’s never worked in this type of atmosphere…..

Postecoglou got the nod after his response to the first interview question posed at Celtic Park.

When asked about his ethnic background he replied “ I’m an Athenian” - to which the board responded - “ that’s good enough for us, when can you start Paul ?”

Hey GG, still dont understand source of your ire, read both pieces now and can’t see what the issue is, can you quote directly pls as I’m not sure what I’m missing ☺️.

As for the appointment, I think it’s a better one than Howe anyways. Couldn’t really understand the clamour to get him to be honest.

"Hey GG, still don`t understand source of your ire, read both pieces now and can’t see what the issue is, can you quote directly pls as I’m not sure what I’m missing ☺️."

Ange Postecoglou: Can `second choice` be a success for Celtic?

But the former Yokohama F Marinos boss represents "a huge risk", according to Pat Bonner.

"He`s very much second choice," said the former Celtic goalkeeper. "I`m absolutely flabbergasted that they are going for someone with no European experience."

And Natasha Miekle, from the Celtic State Of Mind podcast, added: "Every result that goes wrong, every point that is dropped, will be scrutinised through the lens of `what could Eddie Howe have done?`"

The implication here is that anyone who is 2nd choice must automatically be inferior to the original 1st choice. Not necessarily so, imo. I don`t doubt Eddie Howe is a good manager, but the length of time he stalled on signing the contract Celtic offered him, suggested he wasn`t exactly enthusiastic about working in Glasgow, which could have impacted on his ability to improve Celtic enough to challenge for the title next season. You`ll recall that Howe has a large blot on his CV after taking the manager`s job at Burnley?

Postecoglou, on the other hand, sounds well up for the challenge. That`s not to say he`ll be a sure fire success, but it can only help his cause. Besides, he has a good track record, even if some Scots commentators tend to look down their noses at both the A and J Leagues. I`d bet some of their teams would make mincemeat of most of our Premiership teams.

The suggestion that Postecoglou is some kind of hick from a footballing backwater irked me, because it smacks of arrogance and has no justification.

I’ve heard the “second choice” gripe from several quarters.

Pat Bonner needs to accept that anybody who took the job would obviously be in that position.

There was an interesting contribution on Radio Scotland this morning from a football journalist who has been based in Japan for many years. His claim that Postecoglou was amongst the 10 best coaches in the world was scoffed at by Tom English. He also said Guardiola was an admirer. The Scottish-based pundits were all peddling the old line that football management in Glasgow was incomparable to anything he could have encountered elsewhere in his career, especially in relation to media attention.

Postecoglou is as hard as nails. He prefers to face up to his critics.

So, you can be sure that Pat Bonner will be invited in for a chat with the new manager... and we`ll never again hear another squeak from him about "second choice".

And I can hardly wait for the Scottish media pack to come under his steely gaze... prepare for some fireworks there! I don`t know how he handled the Japanese press, but he certainly devoured the Aussie sports media.

I would be surprised if he doesn`t empty Parkhead of the old retainers in the coaching staff, and he will probably sack half the current playing squad.

But six months from now, they will go to Ibrox and give The Rangers a right old stuffing!

For some years, I had an office overlooking Albert Park Lake in the heart of Melbourne. It is where the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix is held every year.

Surrounding the lake is a series of sports complexes - a fabulous swimming centre which was used in the Commonwealth Games, several sports fields and the stadium of South Melbourne FC, which Ange Postecoglou managed in the late 1990s.

I used to walk around the lake at lunchtime. It took about an hour and was a perfect relaxing exercise break.

Frequently, the South Melbourne team would be doing circuits of the lake too, except they were running, and they would invariably overtake me three times during my circuit. Right in the heart of the group would be Postecoglou, motivating the players, never short of breath, always talking positively.

A deeply impressive individual.

Bonner might have been better to consult our very own Oz before opening his mouth and letting his belly rumble and as for that Natasha Meikle....

The BBC must be hard up for something to fill their website when they're putting up the unsubstantiated p!$h some so-called pundits spout. Like Roman 1885, I'm well have impressed with Oz's glowing testimonial and look forward to a 2 horse race in the Premiership next season.

While it's far from ideal, it's certainly better than a 1 horse race. ☺

Loads of managers will be 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th choices etc it's just not normally in the public domain as often. I'm a bit surprised some commentators are making such a big deal of it.

I'm sure he won't be bothered anyway.
