No Rodri or no Fernandinho = Pep over thinking and playing a weird formation . My heart says city but my brain says Chelsea .

Looking good for Chelsea. Man City fans look shell-shocked. Think that was Mason Mount who put through the long pass for the goal. It`s looking good for England with quality players like that. Kante too what a player he is and Havertz is no bad either.

I've a new found appreciation for Chelsea. They totally nullified City and exploited the space on the break terrifically.
Never thought I'd see this City side and think I can't see where the goals would come from.

Chelsea so many great performances tonight. But Kante was immense, what a few years 2 premiership titles, World Cup and now a champions league and he has played such a huge part.

Before Wednesday, I thought there was a good chance that Manchester would create a bit of history with City and United bringing home both European trophies and failing that, long odds on that at least one of them would.

While United may consider themselves unlucky, City can have no complaints. Well short of their best on the night, but credit to Chelsea. They played out of their skins and Tuchel got his tactics spot on. It's often said you can only play as well as your opponents allow you to and Chelsea never gave City the scope to hurt them with their intensity and pressing. Even the loss of talismanic Thiago failed to disturb their focus.

Pep is an excellent manager, but like a few other posters and perhaps with the benefit of hindsight, I think his initial team selection didn't help his side. They had a better balance when Fernandinho came on, allowing Gundogan to play further forward. The loss of De Bruyne blunted their creativity and the failure to play a striker from the start proved costly. Sterling played reasonably well but Torres might have been a better bet, given the England international has been so out of sorts recently.

Of course, Chelsea's win may well have nothing to do with Tuchel's tactics or Pep's failings, but down to TOWK's reverse psychology and obvious schadenfreude throughout this thread. And I thought Liverpool were United's Falkirk and City their wee team..... 🙂

True GG, it certainly would have bothered me more to see Liverpool win it than City I`d still rather never see City win the champions league or any other title. Same goes for PSG.
As for schadenfreude read Pep`s quote from before the game and tell me you don`t feel a pinch of it as well.

"I am so confident in my team. You cannot imagine how confident I am in my team and what we have to do"

Is it a bit self centered to cry when you get injured during a champions league final?

I could understand it after the game if your team loses or you make a massive howler that costs the game but it's a team game. There are guys on the bench desperate to play.

Maybe De Bruyne was thinking this could be a fractured cheek bone and may keep him out the Euros, there by missing another chance if glory with his country

I think that was exactly the right thing for Pep to say before the game - it transmits confidence and belief to his players. Normally, that would help a team to edge a tough game. On this occasion, his team selection was a bit unbalanced, in my humble one and Chelsea profited from it once. Had Werner been Les profligate, the margin could have been greater.

Would you expect Pep to say "It's going to be a very tough game. Chelsea are such a good team, full of quality in every position. Our chances are no more than 50-50."

Actually apart from the 50/50 that is more or less exactly what I`d expect a manager to say before a big final.
I`d wager if it had been Jose who had been waxing on about how supremely confident he was of victory and then was subsequently bested you have a wry smile on your face GG.

Man City hit their peak about two months ago. At that time they would have beaten any team in the world. Chelsea have come good right at the end of the season. Thomas Tuchel has produced a team of winners from the same players who were demoralised under Frank Lampard. I probably wanted Man City to win but Chelsea were the better team on the night. I did think however that Rudiger blatantly took de Bruyne out. Rudiger had face protection and it seemed, used that to injure de Bruyne`s head. I thought it was a deliberate act and he should have been sent off.

I found it strange that about a week ago Pep and his team were partying, smoking cigars and singing oasis songs. The season wasn`t over and the biggest game was yet to come. As Kenny Rogers said, `there`ll be time enough for counting when the dealings done.`

I'm sure you're well aware that I don't much like Mourinho ever since he morphed into a sour faced, moaning git, who's always ready to blame someone else when things go wrong. Give me enough credit to be able to put personal feelings to one side, when it comes to evaluating a pre match talk to the media. I understand why Pep said the things he did before the game. He wanted to give his team a confidence boost. Unfortunately for him, it didn't work, but as I said above, maybe the team he put out wasn't the right formation for this game and a far more significant factor. In any case, the first goal was always likely to be massive and so it proved.

Pep isn't the first manager to try the "my boys are great" approach. In the early 90s, Barca met Milan in the CL final. Before the game, Cruyff told the media how his team would destroy the Italian champions, because man for man, they were superior in every department. His opposite number, Fabio Capello, dispensed with the pre match team talk and pinned up every newspaper report he could find on Cruyff's comments.

It worked quite well..................... Milan won 4-0.
