 Plus Ca Change.
Topic Originator: Sliema Par

On Wednesday the whole of the UK could watch England play Austria in a warm up match on ITV (Council house TV as some call it.)

One had to be a SKY Sports subscriber to view the Scotland or Wales games.

Today, all over the UK ,one can watch, yes, gosh,it`s England again v Romania free on ITV but, sure enough, one has to be a subscriber to SKY to enjoy our game in Luxembourg.

We are equal partners in the Union........

Been like that for years… my kids never really supported Scotland growing up because for years I didn’t have sky and the Scotland games were only on sky so they never got to see them

STV simply don’t have the finances to buy rights to Scotland games in competition to SKY.

England v Romania was trailed last night as being on ITV and STV. Does that mean STV `opt in` to the broadcast? I wonder what the reaction would be if England`s home matches were shown in England but not in Scotland?

If STV had the rights to Scotland games and ITV had no rights to England games would the Scotland games be broadcast throughout the UK?

About 10% of Scotland is English and many Scots would like to watch the game too.

In contrast 1.5% of England is Scottish.

Of course, there's a simple solution if you don't want to watch the England game...

Nothing to do with Scotland being independent unless the Scottish government in and independent Scotland plans to outlaw the broadcasting of England football matches by non publicly funded broadcasters.

How is STV financed? Is it owned by ITV or just a partner with its own finance?

In theory, a pro-rata percentage of what ITV spent on engurland games should have been available for STV.

It is worth paying for Sky just to avoid the ITV commentary.

STV is its own company. It could have chose to not show the England game and show something different instead, as it has done it the past, but it decided to show the England game as it would make it more money through advertising revenue.

Don't think I have ever watched an England game on telly, apart from when they play Scotland or when they are doing a penalty shoot out.

Full coverage for a friendly?

Snoozefest!!

IMHO …You can’t vote for the Union and then complain about the fact that England takes precedence when it comes to purchasing sporting rights, going on about 66 etc

It’s simple demographics - for every one person living in Scotland there are 11 living in England (that’s why the union is so unbalanced and can never be a union of equals)

If any of us were in charge of public broadcasting and/or money for content, we all would spend the money on the content that’s going to satisfy the most people

Yeah, I usually tune in to an england game, put it on mute while they sing that awful forelock tugging anthem that wouldn't be out of place in a tin pot dictatorship, then unmute it to watch the game. Normally, I then switch the game off completely after hearing a commentator say "england expects", "1966", "geoff hurst" when there was no real need to. The commentary always tends to be completely biased, which is rather annoying

I certainly wouldn`t watch an England friendly game. As for tournament games, it would depend on what the chances were of England losing.

"STV is its own company."

Correct, the only part of the network not owned by ITV plc.

I`m not up to speed on the more recent dynamics - but the ITV network and STV were in dispute for quite a few years, and advertising revenues were an important aspect.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/tv-radio/stv-and-itv-on-a-collision-course-to-the-high-court-1820825.html

STV ended up paying £18 million to settle the litigation.

During these troubles STV dropped several popular networked series - and many satellite viewers north of the border opted to tune in via an English postcode in order to access them.

STV is a privately owned company. It wouldn't make any difference if Scotland were independent. TV rights go to whoever offers the most money. STV probably see an England game as cheap filler TV to make some advertising revenue.

Just don't watch it if you're not interested.

Why shouldn`t they show it. Plenty England supporters in Scotland. If the SFA are going to highest bidder (Sky) it`s got nothing to do with them, probably doesn`t make commercial sense, whereas for Sky it does

So if STV is a completely separate company they must have to pay a fee to ITV to show ITV content? Meaning they must have paid to show the engurland game?

There's a problem with this
Your numbers don't work... the 10% of scotland being English means around 600,000 English people live in Scotland , whereas the 1.5% of England being Scottish means around 850,000 Scots live in England. Which is around 50% more

STV showing Eng v Sco. There are numerous websites listing all the games and who is covering them.
We've already agreed at work that the Sco v Czech 2pm kick off on Monday 14th is going on the big tv in the meeting room so saves a half day aff.

If I've followed their deal with ITV correctly I believe STV pay a flat rate for access to ITV programs so they've in effect already paid for access to the England game tonight whereas they'd have had to outbid SKY for the rights to the Scotland game.

If it doesn't make sense to outbid SKY then they're as well airing something they've already paid for that will appeal to enough viewers who would want to watch the England game in Scotland. I'm sure if they though they would get more viewers in the slot they would drop the England game and replace it with something else.

The real life McGlashan's are furious though. How dare STV show the *spits* England game. STV? More like ETV! I'll never watch it again just like I no longer eat Tunnocks teacakes or shop Tesco.

Is there an opportunity for some comedian to offer alternative web cast details whilst watching games involving England matches for Scottish supporters.

For the Euros, anyone know where I can get a wall chart?
